This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers the turmoil in the Frankish Kingdom which led to the rise of Charles Martel who famously defeated the invading forces of the Umayyad Caliphate at the Battle of Tours. His reign and that of his son, Pippin III, who appointed himself as king are briefly covered before the reign of Charlemagne is examined in detail. Charlemagne is without a doubt one of the most famous European monarchs and the Renaissance of Learning, his conquests and famously, his being crowned as Roman Emperor by Leo III are only a few of his achievements. His reign lasted for 47 years and after his grandsons divided the empire, the remnants became the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire.
Ten Minute History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Chris Wickham - The Inheritance of Rome: A History of Europe from 400 to 1000. - Seriously one of the best works on the period known as the Dark Ages, it covers everything from the collapse of the Western Roman Emperor to the nomads in Eastern Europe in an easily consumable format. An amazing book.
Rosamond Mckitterick - Charlemagne: The Formation of a European Identity. - This one is by my old lecturer and so I'd advise it for undergrads or enthusiasts only. It is probably the best book on Charlemagne's reign available and is up to date on the new findings surrounding things like where he conquered and his personal education. Few maps though, so boo there.

Charlemagne was the model for many future French kings, who would emulate him by invading their neighbors, having close ties to the Pope, and naming their sons Louis.

Fun fact for other people named Magnus out there: The name comes from a Viking misunderstanding of Charlemagne's Latin name - Carlous Magnus, which of course means "Charles the Great" or "Karl den store" if you're into Swedish. The Vikings were impressed with his power and thought it would be a great idea to name some of their sons "Magnus" as well, not understanding it wasn't a name but an adjective. Hardly the first time this mistake was made in history, but since it's where my name comes from I like the story. Unfortunately I don't think there are any tautological Magnus the Greats in history. There is an Akbar the Great over in the Moghul empire though, which should translate to pretty much the same thing.

Well not actually. The title Tsar is fashioned after the title caesar used primarly in the years of the tetrarchy with meaning junior co-emperor, but after that it was mostly symbolic gesture bestowed upon the emperors kinsman. The first foreigner to be bestowed the title caesar was khan Tervel, who never acually used it, but 2 centuries later Simeon I of the Bulgarian Kingdom proclaimed himself tsar of bulgars and romans, that was translated in greek as basileous, meaning emperor.

Little fun fact, one of Carlemagne's most renowned knights and sometimes leader of his vanguard was Ogier the Dane/Oger le Danois/Holger Danske. He has been romanticized many times by French poets over the centuries and was buried in a great sarcophagus in the abbey of St. Faro of Meaux. Today a sleeping statue of him resides under Kronborg in Denmark and according to danish folklore, he will wake up when Denmark faces an existential threat.

You're the new Roman Emperor!" said the pope, pretending to still be part of the Roman Empire. Then the Franks broke their kingdom into what would later be called France and Not France (Holy Roman Empire).

Actually for century a third part of the empire existed, often called "Burgundy"... Parts of it were the Netherlands, Belgium, Altace, Lorraine, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Bourgogne etc.

There is no way to estimate the population of a medieval country unless you've got writings from that period, which I'm sure wouldn't be accurate either. Also, judging a country's ability to wage war by their population is impossible. Otherwise, you're pretty close to the truth.

The Capetian family line in France was born out of Hughes Capet, the... mayor of Paris. Remember this is line and its offshoots ruled France from 900 or so until 1848.

8:55 Fun fact: this was the very first Louis (Louis I) in the 18-Louis long list of French kings, while Charlemagne was considered to be Charles I. It all started with them, which can seem arbitrary knowing that the French name "Louis" derives from the Frankish name "Clovis", and there were four kings named Clovis before linguistical drift caused them to become "Louis". The reason for this is King Louis XI (ruled 1461-1483), who was the first Louis to use a regnal number while he was alive, and who fixed the distinction between "Clovis" and "Louis". That meant he detached himself from the Merovingian dynasty's "Clovis" kings, and tied himself to the Carolingian dynasty. Before that, Charles V (r. 1364-1380) was the first king to use a regnal number while alive.

Less than Louis: 17 Louis vs 10 Charles, but a lot of the subsequent Charles were in deference to Charlemagne. Basically in France dynasties tended to keep the same name, for example Raymond for the Counts of Toulouse and William for the Dukes of Aquitaine.

Hey! This was great. I’m an MA student whose spent the last couple of years specialising in Carolingian history and have to congratulate you on how much good stuff you packed into this video. Carolingian politics is hard to follow at the best of times so this video is really awesome. If I’m being picky, though, then Caroline Minuscule (spelt like that!) wasn’t the first script to introduce minuscule letter forms (lower case refers only to print). There had been sever minuscule scripts, like half-uncial, Beneventan minuscule, Visigothic minuscule etc., that pre-date Caroline Minuscule. Indeed, these scripts fed into CM, making it what it was. Fun fact: Times New Roman font is derived from fifteenth-century humanist minuscule scripts, which in turn was a revival of (you guessed it..!) Caroline Minuscule!

I still call them Roman although many who don't know much about history, if they know about them at all, call them the Byzantines. The Roman empire we know was for over 100 years one ruled by a Christian, for a couple hundred years had a huge Christian population, a large part of the population actually did speak Greek including most of the aristocracy even if the lawbooks were in Latin (which would become popular in Justinian's court oddly enough), had lawbooks mostly written based on the ways the classical Romans did it, and Rome actually used chainmail armour for most of it's history, not the lorica segmentata.

Great video . I am dane myself . So Quick mention of home country was great . The danish/Frankish conflict started already with widukind . After Charlemagne conquered the saxon . Widukind actully fleed north and got support from the danish King Sigfried. So Denmark actully supported the saxon rebillion . After Sigfried’s death . The conflict continued with the new danish King Godfred . And it was during those conflict that the attack on Lindisfarne happened . Godfred also improved southern border fortifications known as Dannevirke ... And in 808 Godfred attacked Obodrites and forced them accept him as overlord . The Obodrites were allied with Charlemagne . Soon after Godfred attacked another of Charlemagne’s allies. And that was the town of Reric. The town was burned down and its merchants were moved the danish town of Hedeby . In 809 Godfred sent emissaries negotiate peace . It failed . And in 810 Godfred and his viking Army attacked the Frisian Coast . The conflict only ended when Godfred was murdered by one of his own sons. And after that Godfreds Nephew Hemming became new danish King . And Hemming made peace with the Franks . But that peace didnt last long . After Charlemagnes death and the division of his Empire . The danish vikings attacked really started . Even Aachen was attacked and plundered . And in 845 Paris was attacked by the historical Regnar Lothbrok (or as Frankish sources Call him Regnarius). So yes aafter Charlemagnes death and weakening of the Frankish kingdom caused by division . That opened up the for viking attacks..... Also Italy wasnt spared . It was attacked by twice. First by Regnars son the historical Bjeorn Ironside and later by the the danish cheif Hesten . He raided the town of Luna . Hesten woud later cause trouble for the young King Alfred the Great . But that another story

So this is how much of a nerd I am. I suddenly got interested in this Era after Konami released an archetype in Yugioh called the Infernoble Knights. The boss monster of the deck is called Emperor Charles, the Great, and works with another card called Infernoble Knight Emperor Charles. The deck seems to focus on the time when the Francs were having wars with all of their neighbors. The artwork is amazing, and I'd recommend anyone to look the cards over.

Seems the Roman Empire never really died, it just morphed into different pieces... the Byzantine Empire, Francia, the Catholic Church, and the Holy Roman Empire.

AbbeyRoadkill1 not really. The East didnt die until the 15th century and the carolingian empire and the holy roman empire were merely usurpers. Technickly the papal state was the true western roman empire as the pope basically owned 1/3 of europe. The HRE would only be an honourary title meant to usurp the roman empire. The same would happen in the east when the turks captured constantinople. The idea of this new ottoman empire was to be an islamic Eastern "Roman" empire. Much like the holy roman empire was a catholic "roman empire". Ironicly the the two peoples that killed the real roman empire were now pretending to be the roman empire

@@Robert399 Well you can with Byzantium. It was called Roman and didn't really stop Latin officially until Heraclius in the early 7th century. Then you have to remember ERE or more so the Roman Empire still held lands in Italy. Just was one whirlwind ride, but they were the continuation of the Roman empire. West died which meant the East was now just the whole piece again. Hell Byzantine Empire was a term created by others by the end stages of the empire finally croaking.

Charlemagne is just a name given to Karl in the French-speaking areas. As a Frank that is a German his name was Karl. He was hardly named Charles the Great at birth.

You missed out a quite important detail :( The Eastern Roman Empire did recognize him as basileus (which means king or emperor). HOWEVER, they refused to recognize him as Emperor of the Romans. Therefore, his crownation was still illegal and the ERE was the true and ONLY Roman Empire. (Btw. the ERE also recognized some Sassanid kings as basileus)
