I loved the film Love in the afternoon with Audrey H. He was fantastic and one of the very best film o the director Billy Wilder

What a sad film - sensitive and well acted but terribly sad!

Was Gary 59 here? Gosh. Cigarettes and killer stress over the Patricia Neal affair. It is incredible how elderly he looks with her and that awful movie with Audrey Hepburn. He himself said it was "embarrassing" to watch.

Pity he didn't have the guts to end up with Patricia - sounds like they were the love of each other's lives. To live with her might have saved him.

He was 57 here. Like most other actors of that era, he was a heavy smoker and aged very quickly after 40. He looked great until about 40 or so, but looked noticeably older after 40. He wasn't the only one, though. When you watch old movies, all those actors like Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Gregory Peck, and William Holden looked and sounded much older than their age after 40. Maria said he tried to quit smoking many times, but couldn't do it. Also, even though he wasn't diagnosed with cancer until 1960, he was probably already ill by this point. At least he remained slim until the end (and never gained as much weight as some of his peers did). At least he looked like a distinguished older man. Still, I can't help but wonder what he would have looked like in his 50s if he had quit smoking earlier.
