I remember watching a documentary about Wyatt Earp . Despite the numerous gunfights he had, he never got shot. Though Doc Holliday died painfully due to his illness, Wyatt died peacefully in his sleep. Aside from them , Bat Masterson, who once worked with Wyatt, died on his desk while working as a writer. All three ended their days not by being shot or killed. Lucky for them in a way.

Although Val Kilmer's performance in his portrayal of Doc Holiday in the movie "Tombstone" is truly an iconic performance, in my opinion Dennis Quaid's version in Kevin Costner's movie "Wyatt Earp" strikes me as probably the more accurate depiction of this man because of Quaid's unhinged out of control temper at times and his mannerisms and his very slight build.

It's known that Doc's father brought back a teenager from the Mexican-American War and adopted him. This teenager was a practiced pistolero. It's assumed that Doc struck up a friendship with him as a boy and was taught shooting skills. But most likely he was also taught the use of a knife in a fight. As history tells us, Doc was known to use a knife in settling drunken saloon disputes.

Interesting ..was stationed there ft huachuca..stones thro from tombstone.they had country western jamboree there every year circa 1969 lasted few days..not many residents back then i could see.stayed on in sierra vista and later tucson for some time after my ETS.did a bunch of online reading about the clantons and earps politics which was interesting.support docs and earps politics and other stories ive read about billy the kid and his pistoleros all motivated by political corruption.same with the james boys..here in 2022 the corruption has evolved into near perfection where they cant be touched..i long for the old ways,the old ways when we stood a chance.whack a bad guy then go sheriff someplace else..ft huachuca shoulda got involved when clantons were rustlin cattle from mexico..thats federal shit

I like the movie Tombstone but I really love Val Kilmers performance as Doc ! He really captures what I suspose was the real Doc Holidays personality. After all he was a gambler and a gunfighter so he had to be cocky and sure of hisself. He is OFTEN mistaken as Doc Holliday even though his hair color is completely wrong, and is certainly not suffering from tuberculosis. John Escapule get's tattooed constantly on folks as being Doc...but he isn't. John Escapule is the great grandfather of Dusty Escapule, the current mayor of the city of Tombstone.

It always frustrates me when supposed historians tell us that Doc Holliday went to Las Vegas, Nevada. Las Vegas, Nevada wasn’t even founded as a city until 1905, and it wasn’t incorporated until 1911. Doc Holliday never went to Las Vegas, Nevada because it didn’t exist as a city while he was alive. He did, however’ spend some time in Las Vegas, New Mexico, which is a small town on the New Mexico/Colorado border. Seriously, man. If you’re going to present historical facts as if they are historically accurate, at least get the basic stuff that’s easy to fact-check right.

I remember that the Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer movie "Tombstone" & Kevin Costner's epic "Wyatt Earp" were released in theater's within a short amount of time. As I recall each movie, it always seemed to me that Wyatt Earp was more historically correct, whilst Tombstone was really more entertaining. They are both great movie's, although the edge definitely goes to Kurt & Val for all the memorable one-liner's in it! 😂

I think the drug(s) Doc was taking, if it was some type of opiate, would also help to keep him from coughing as much as he would without the drug, from his TB infection. I know some opiates, at least do help a person to breathe easier and relax the lungs. Shallow breathing is what kills in an overdose, and at a correct dose, it would give him some comfort, as his TB got worse.

Technically 🤓 Earp wasn't actually there in the movie when Doc died.. in their last visit, Doc was bed ridden, and told him to leave him be.. a way of saying he didn't want Earp to remember him this way. A touching scene really. In the movie he dies shortly after Earp leaves.. but who's to say if the day he actually dies was in deed the same day?

Doc and Wyatt were great friends Wyatt even mentioned that, you gotta realize its the 1860s to 80s, they didn't go everywhere together. Doc came west to hopefully get help from TB. Also no Doc wasn't built he was a sickly skinny man yes, he wasn't accurate but was fast. Also yes he had a death wish and knew it hence the recklessly violent drunken attitude this is well documented, he lived but didn't give up, his last words are well documented because he didn't want to die in a hospital. Those were my thoughts as well. Knowing and being familiar with Bar owners was a common thing for gamblers. Trusting Wyatt with his life is another. The reason Doc and Wyatt were so familiar and friendly was because Doc saved Wyatt's life long before Tombstone. Moving around where the silver, gold, and jobs were was common during the Wild West times. So for Doc Holliday to be traveling where Wyatt was and Wyatt traveling where Doc was; makes them closer than others. If we take the newest movie, "The Magnificent Seven" into account, you can see references of the "time-lapse" of traveling from place to place. You are nearly obligated to stay where you are for long stints. Also, Doc most likely went to where Wyatt was due to his connection with law enforcement. Just because you had a badge DID NOT mean you were NOT corrupt. So Doc most likely went due to trusting Wyatt.

Here's one. Gamblers moved around on the circuit. Typically they'd arrive in a new town and if successful they'd buy their own saloon/gambling hall/brothel to increase their earnings by getting a percentage from every table plus liquor sales and ladies' fees. (Supposedly that's how Doc met Big Nose Kate). At one time Doc came to Dallas, Texas when it was still a small community. There he owned his own place for a while, about 200-300 yards from what is now Dealey Plaza, the site of a rather famous incident in November 1963.

It is believed that Virgil, who was originally carrying the shotgun, gave it to Doc in exchange for Doc’s cane, so he could demonstrate that he was not confronting the Clantons and McLaurys to shoot or kill anyone, but instead as a gesture of peace. It's not in any old book, newspaper, obituary, national archives...nothing. Val Kilmer did not "accidentally" say "huckle bearer". It's literally in the script, which is online and can be read. The script writer lifted that phrase from a 1920's book "Tombstone: An Iliad of the Southwest" in which Doc tells Ringo "I'm your huckleberry. That's JUST my game", just like he does in the movie. "I'm your huckleberry" is a well-documented old saying that exists in many books. Unlike "huckle bearer" which only exists on the internet, starting in about 1997. As described, it's grammatically incorrect anyway. Allegedly, the casket handle was a huckle. (never was) So if you carried the casket, you were a huckle bearer. That's stupid. That would literally mean "handle bearer". You don't bear the handle of anything, you bear the LOAD, which would be the casket in this case. Further proof can be found by simply looking up the word "Huckle". It never, ever meant anything remotely resembling "casket handle", or any other part of a casket, or any type of handle. It means "Hip, haunch". Always did. So just that alone kills the "huckle bearer" nonsense myth.

Doc killed three people in his life. A man named Mike Gordon was shooting up Doc's saloon in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Doc killed him, and it was judged as justifiable. He killed Tom McLaury at the OK Corral, blasting him open with a shotgun. Then he was one of three who shot Frank McLaury, along with Wyatt and Morgan Earp. Doc was a gentleman who practiced dentistry as late as 1878 in Dodge City. And he fostered his reputation as a crazed killer, because it discourage many from challenging him. Many of the negative things we've all heard about Doc came from Bat Masterson, a newspaperman later in his life. He didn't like Doc, and told many wild stories about him. Most of them were not true.

Tombstone with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer is my favorite newer western movie. Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday is my all time favorite character. I didn't see Val as Doc, I just saw Doc. 'I'm your Huckleberry. ' 'Say When.' Are my favorite lines. I've watched this movie more than any other one. About 50+ times. Wish I could go back in time and meet Doc Holiday. I think we would have been friends. Just sad to know he was very sick and died so young.
