I had my DNA tested by 23 and Me, and it was so far off from what my family trees said, that I had it redone with Ancestry. Ancestry fit much better with what we knew. There were no big surprises, except that the English heritage was reduced because much of it was actually Norwegian (Viking). Ancestry has changed quite a bit, but I do think it is actually getting more accurate. Unfortunately I have not been able to convince ANY of my relatives to do their DNA. Often they are paranoid, about what, I don't know. Perhaps they think their DNA will be used to make a clone, and they will be killed off and replaced, like the Stepford Wives. Good video by the way.

Thank You. Yes from what I can tell Ancestry has the deeper reference panels when it comes to Ethnicity. DNA testing does make a lot of people nervous for many reasons. My mom though I was asking for her DNA to prove I was adopted!

Really excellent video and one of the few that attempts to explain people's DNA results on all these big box autosomal DNA testing companies. Thanks for the video - well done !! Just want to point out that Ancestry tells their test takers that your results are what your ancestry looks like "hundreds of years ago". Problem is do they mean 200 years ago (1823) ? and yet they give everyone their Viking results - everyone with NW European ancestry seems to get about 7% Sweden and Denmark (trust me - I've looked at hundreds of these results) which would be well over 1,000 years ago and yet they do not give 1,000 year ago results for anything else but Viking. Kind of odd and they do not explain this.

Thanks for the comments, yes we Europeans are all part Viking and decendents of Genghis Khan if we are to believe what we read.

-- #1 - Your Results Don't Meet the Defination of Ethnicity. #2 - Your Ancestral Heritage Does Not Match Your DNA. #3 - Your DNA and Ancestral Heritage Cover Different Time Periods. #4 - Your DNA includes migration and immigration and invasions. #5 - Your DNA Does Not Favor Your Parental Lines. #6 - Most of Your Ancestors DNA is not passed to you. #7 - The very small percentages are probably just noise. #8 - The Reference Regions are Approximate. #9 - The DNA Ethnicity Ranges are Approximate. #10 - Your Results May [!Will!] Change Over Time. --

I don’t want anyone in my family getting a DNA test. It’ll make it easier for the feds to find me for my past discretions.

Good Luck with that.

But your cousins got tested so they can still find you.

Cuba invaded by the Moors from north Africa!? Er, no. The Moors invaded Spain ( at keast by 2 different groups) . Spanish blood does not contain ( by any msjor %) moorish blood, however '10%' of a modern Spanish DNA has been assigned to jewish roots . Also, vikings or settlers from Sweden never invaded UK & Ireland. It was Norwegians & Danes. Please call me pedantic but having descent from both the aforementioned countries gives me some insight.

Yep slip of the tongue on the Spain//Moors invasion- there was a pop up correcting that.

You're assuming that worshipping ancestors is a good thing! And you obviously have an affinity for generalizations and oversimplifications!
