One of my rigorous travel rules is "no jeans", for exactly the reason you state: they take forever to dry. As for towels, I use one by Packtowl. I discovered your clothes drying trick independently when I was staying at a hostel that didn't like guests doing their own laundry. I did my laundry in the shower, then roller my washed clothes up in the towel to conceal them as I walked from the bathroom to the bedroom. Realized they dried much more quickly.
@Tenacioustrekkers8 жыл бұрын
It really is a shame considering how awesome jeans are! They are tough, keep you warm, look good.. I still take mine on trips but give them at least 2 days to dry. Don't think I've ever stayed at a hostel that restricted guest from doing laundry. I did stay at one that would only allow the use of the dryer for only a couple hours a day. Hard to make friends when you're all fighting for a dryer ;)

Hi good video just wondering of how heavy was everything in the bag?
@Tenacioustrekkers5 жыл бұрын
The bag is about 7kgs when fully packed, which is the limit on most airlines for carry on. Sometimes I will wear my jacket and put the small electronics packing cube in my jacket pocket at the airport to sneak past the weight restrictions if my bag is too heav, but I've never had a problem.

I would like to know from between ospey 46 litre porter and osprey 55 litre (that has a detachable) which one you think is better ?
@Tenacioustrekkers5 жыл бұрын
khalil k I have not used the Osprey 55 yet. I am hesitant to try anything bigger than the 46L because that is usually the maximum size allowed as carry on on most airlines. I believe the 55L might have to be checked. But overall, I am pretty happy with Osprey and recommend them.

Really helpful, thank you. Quick question though, what kind of shoes are those that you have on? They look pretty good to travel in...
@Tenacioustrekkers7 жыл бұрын
Chris Javier hello! Thanks, glad you liked it. In the video I'm wearing my everyday shoes; a pair of Northface trainers, however for travel I prefer to take my Merrel "All out blaze" hiking shoes. To travel light, I recommend just taking a good pair of versatile hiking shoes only. Although I love my trainers, they aren't good for long hikes.

Really nice video! I got an outdoor backpack. Is it necessary to buy another travel backpack?
@japanlovely81778 жыл бұрын
very smart insight
@Tenacioustrekkers8 жыл бұрын
Jacob Gao not necessarily. We both have large outdoor camping backpacks (north face terra 65) but those are too large to use as carry on. We bought these instead because they are more comfortable, compact and easier to pack and unpack quickly. We have a comparison video on here to demonstrate the differences, pros & cons. Either way, both can be used to backpack. All just depends on personal preference :)

Amazing video. Very useful information. Thank you very much. I'd love to see a video on money matters. How do you carry all the money in China? Are ATMs reliable? I will be backpacking in China for a good 6 weeks. And don't know how my money handling will go
@Tenacioustrekkers6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marcos! Glad it was useful to you. A money video is a great idea, I will make one per your request. To answer your questions: 1) I generally use my ATM card whenever I travel and carry a small amount of cash for tips and such. Depends a lot on the location of course. In most cities you will have no problem paying with cards and readily find ATMS. Make sure you use one that does not charge a foreign transaction fee or better yet, use one that gives you points for travel related expenses. Whenever I was about to head into smaller towns and villages, I would withdraw around $50 - $100 worth of yuan (depending on how long I was going to stay in the small town to pay for transport, accommodations, food etc) I would hide the majority of the cash in big bills and only carry small amounts in my pocket. China is generally very safe. Use common sense and you should be fine. 2) I was in Hangzhou and needed to withdraw some cash at the bus station because I was on my way to Huangshan. I used a shady broken down ATM outside the building and it kept giving me an error. As soon as I arrived at Huangshan later that day, I received an alert from my credit card company about fraudulent transactions....my card was "skimmed" and was being used to buy stuff in China. It took a couple phone calls but I was able to cancel my card and resolve the problem, but the card was now unusable. So take a backup card just in case, make sure to set automatic alerts on your card to detect this type of stuff, don't use shady looking ATMS, always write down the international collect number for your credit card companies customer service line and check your alerts from the bank as soon as you get them. Other than that one instance, I had no issues using ATMS. Best bet are the ones in the banks or inside the airport (although these will have a higher fee) You can also prepare for your trip by ordering money from your bank. On my last trip to the South Pacific, I ordered about $50 worth of cash in currency from Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu...just to have it on my when I arrived to pay for buses. Hope that answered your questions. Safe travels bro!

Tenacious Trekkers thank you very much for the detailed explanation. I used to travel extensively around the world. Then I got married had a kid and the backpacking style of traveling didn't suit me for quite sometime. Now I'm gonna give it another try with China. And money matters were one of my biggest concerns. I used to travel around with a few bills of local currency and travelers cheques hidden in my money belt. It worked like charm! But times have changed. The card skimming scam is certainly scary. I'll take your advice to heart to have the best possible traveling experience. Thank you so much and greetings from Toronto, Canada

I would have loved to see you packing the yellow backpack inside the travel backpack. Or did you travel with it outside of it since is a little bigger?
@Tenacioustrekkers7 жыл бұрын
+Xemmas Sorry for the confusion. Actually, we pack our daypacks in our carry-on travel bags. In this particular video, I was using Andres's stuff. His daypack is a small black bag (shown on the video) and it was packed in there. Although my yellow backpack is a bit bigger and stiffer, it fits just fine into my carry-on because I don't take some of the stuff he takes (like a neck pillow, umbrella, first aid kit) Makes sense?

Enjoyed your video, you did mention flip flops but no any other shoes?? Also have you been to Africa and have a packing list?
@Tenacioustrekkers7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I recommend flip flops mostly to use in the bathrooms and such, but not as your only footwear. I travel with a comfortable pair of hiking shoes as my main footwear. These are the shoes I wear throughout and therefor don't need to be packed. It was tricky finding the right pair that is comfortable for both city wear and for hiking mountain trails, I settled on a pair Merrel "All out Blaze" hiking shoes. I highly recommend them.

Hello, i have seen that you have a mirror inside your toiletry bag. Have you ever had problems boarding with the mirror in your carry on or mirrors are allowed in the carry on?
@Tenacioustrekkers8 жыл бұрын
Exovitae wow, good eye! Lol yeah we both have a small mirror in our toiletry bag and we have never had any issue taking it as a carry on. I've only ever had issues with removing liquids & electronic from my carry on to scan separately and very recently I had to leave a souvenir behind because it was not allowed on board - a can of bear meat I bought in Finland - other than that, no ones ever stopped me or questioned the contents of my bag.
@exovitae8 жыл бұрын
Tenacious Trekkers Thanks for the clear up! I recently bought an acrylic/plastic made mirror. The reflection is like of a regular glass one but because is acrylic its so hard to break! I always need a mirror because im balding my head every 5-7 days so it comes in handy.

Is the 45 L bag able to be taken as a carryon or did you have to check that in?
@Tenacioustrekkers8 жыл бұрын
Adam Kramer The Osprey "Porter" 46L is the maximum size allowed as a carry on on almost all airlines. I've taken this bag as a carry on on Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Delta, Air China, Hong Kong Airlines, Spirit, Norwegian Air and Shanghai Air without any issue. Be mindful of the weight, however. Some airlines have lower weight restrictions but I've never had an issue even though my bag is always stuffed to the max.
@Ade2bee8 жыл бұрын
how did you manage to get around the karyon role, where they ask you to fit the bag in the cage and if it is the certain size you have to put in the hold?
@Tenacioustrekkers8 жыл бұрын
I use the Osprey Porter 46L bag, which is the maximum size allowed on flights as a carry on. It fits into the "cage", however not a single person made me demonstrate that it fits. I was actually worried about the weight. Some of the smaller Asian airlines had a really low weight requirement and I was way over. So that there would not be any confusion while boarding, I would always ask the attendant during check in if they wanted to weigh my bag even though it was a carry on, and they would always say it was not necessary. I would also make sure to at least give the impression that the bag was light :) Struggling with your carryon is an invitation to have it weighed and moved to cargo. So there you have it: 1. Osprey Porter 46L is the perfect size for carry on 2. Carry it around like it weights 10LBS, even if it really weighs 30LBS 3. Always ask while checking in if they think it would be a problem as a carry on, better to not have surprises later while boarding Watch my bag comparison video to see the bag. Safe Travels!

There is also the Osprey 40 liter farpoint, it works amazingly well also and is accessible as carry-on for most international flights even (sometimes they are more restrictive)

haha! I've got 6 months in south-east Asia coming up. I'm thinking two shirts, two t-shirts and one polo, not sure if its too much
@Tenacioustrekkers7 жыл бұрын
Kyle Thomsen I'm thinking that if you are going to be there that long, you probably won't be moving from hostel to hostel as often? If that's the case then that should be enough because you'll have plenty of time to do laundry and let it dry. I think that should be enough for you. Hope you have a safe trip!

I really think it depends on the person. Some people do need many things to go abroad. I just came back from Europe, I traveled with my sister and parents. I noticed that my sister just brought so many unnecessary things. Regardless how many times, she had traveled, she just needs a lot of things to live. On contrary, I am an easy person. I bring very little.
