The drama tells the life of Xiao Yanyan, who was the most powerful woman of the Liao dynasty. Xiao Yanyan and Han Derang were childhood sweethearts, but were separated when she was sent into the palace to become the consort of Yelü Xian. Though Xiao Yanyan and Yelu Xian's marriage was not one built on romance, Xiao Yanyan fulfills her job as a dedicated empress, and gains her husband's respect after the policies she instated proved her capability. Xiao Yanyan is entrusted with governing the country and acting as regent for their son after Yelv Xian’s death, and is eventually able to marry her true love Han Derang, who had become the most influential Han official in the Liao court.

Shaun Dou is such an exceptional n brilliant actor. He speaks excellent English as he was educated in Canada. That’s a plus for him. I’ve seen him in several dramas n his portrayal of emotions such as joy,pain,sadness,frustration, jubilation, etc are fantastic. He has a enchanting smile.I particularly liked his superb acting in “Tears in heaven.” Tiffany Tang is a great actress who caught my attention in her part in “ The Liar n the lady.” The main stars have a great chemistry. I look forward to watching this drama.

I am watching this drama a second time. This has got to be the best of the dramas released in 2020 and first quarter of 2021 - and I had watched most of the good ones. Such a refreshing difference - Khitan costumes, culture, architecture, transport. The drama evoked a whole range of different emotions and has an outstanding cast.

I know him from his first film "Under the Hawthorn Tree". That one was great and won many prizes, and the film's director was the director of Beijing 2008 Olympics Games Opening&closing Ceremony. It is indeed a fantastic series... the weakest of the main leads is possibly Tang Yan, but even she didn't do too bad a job. And I think the ending is good or nicely wrapped up (unlike some drama series that leaves the audience hanging in the air with a 🙄😑).

Right now, I can't say I enjoyed it, from the moment they separated Yanyan and Derang, I was so vexed, and such feeling accompanied throughout the drama.. A lovely couple that got engaged was deprived of the opportunity to share the love and happiness they had for one another by an immoral emperor..
