Approach and landing on runway 07 at Tenerife South airport (TFS / GCTS), Canary Islands, Spain. With overflight of La Gomera Island. With ATC (air traffic control) audio. Airbus A320, Cockpit view. Filmed in 4k. Tenerife South Airport is also known as Reina Sofia Airport.
This approach was special because it was longer than usual. Most times, if you fly to Tenerife South airport with runway 07 in use, you get radar vectors between the islands of La Gomera and Tenerife, which guide you to the final approach for the ILS (instrument landing system). If there is more traffic, the final approach is a little longer. This time, there was a lot of traffic and it got so long that we had to overfly the island of La Gomera. This gave us the chance for beautiful views of La Gomera from the cockpit. The distance from La Gomera to Tenerife South airport is about 50 kilometers.
One factor, which caused our long approach, was one of the aircrafts in front of us, which asked for a 270 degree turn near the final approach to extend the approach. We did not know, why that happend. Most of the reasons for such a request is the need to lose altitude and to avoid an "hot and high" approach. If you listen to the ATC radio communication, you can hear the pilots of the plane asking for the turn to extend the approach. In the audio of the video, you hear the communication between the pilot and ATC about the topic.
Tenerife South airport is one of the two airports on Tenerife island. The other airport is Tenerife North Los Rodeos Airport (TFN / GCXO).
Tenerife South has one runway, which is 3200 meters or 10,498 feet long. Due to the proximity to Mount Teide, there is a warning on the approach chart that severe windshears may occur during final approach. It is common that you are fully established on a 3 or 4 miles final approach in landing configuration on speed with an appropriate thrust setting and just moments later, you are e. g. 20 knots faster due to a positive windshear. If the pilots are unable to regain the target speed and thrust on time, a go around has to be flown.
Mount Teide is with the elevation of 3718 meters or 12198 feet the highest spanish mountain. From the ocean floor, the active volcano measures an elevation of 7500 meters or 24600 feet.

There was always discussion about the music in my videos. To eliminate that, my newer videos are all without music. Instead, I try to record the cockpit audio, which includes some checklist conversation, automated weather announcements (ATIS) and conversation with airtraffic control.
