Tenet (2020) MOVIE REACTION - First time watching

Watching Christopher Nolan's science fiction action thriller Tenet for the first time!
One of the most challenging and interesting movies I've seen in a while, and such a great concept for a story.
For everyone in the comments - How does Dunkirk compare to Tenet and Nolan's other big budget films? I love Interstellar, Inception, the Batman trilogy, and The Prestige, but I still haven't watched Dunkirk. Is it worth reacting to in a video?

I saw Tenet twice in the movie theater when it came out. I love it. I even have a tenet tattoo on my right arm. Loved your reaction.

You actually did catch one of the biggest theories about the film, that Neil (Pattison) is the grown up version of Maximilien. Look at the last four letters there backwards. My bet is while that was in the original script, Nolan decided against explicitly putting it into the film as he didn't want to confuse people any more, there was already A LOT. Much better for us to just speculate about it afterwards. Also, Neil was the one in the Kyiv Opera who saved the Protagonist. While there is a lot to catch with this movie that is insane and fun to think about, I also think, even more so than Inception that you mentioned, Nolan just wanted us to roll with the punches and have a good time. It's a vibe movie, with awesome locations and a sick soundtrack. Michael Mann is his hero (stylistically so similar, Dark Knight is pretty much superhero Heat) and I know he put Mann's Miami Vice on the production whiteboard when making this one, and it is very similar. Auteur-driven blockbusters where the dialogue is often incomprehensible and you don't really know what's happening but the vibes are so strong that you just go with it and have a great time.

Thanks for the awesome comment! It actually feels pretty cool to have picked up the Maximilein theory, now knowing others had the same thought. I definitely see the Michael Mann influence as well. The Dark Knight opening sequence also comes to mind as very much hitting on that style. I think there are a lot of parts in Tenet where you could splice in a scene from Inception or Dark Knight and stylistically it would fit.

The problem with that theory is that it literally makes no sense. Aside from the fact that Neil seems not particularly interested in saving Kat, which would be a weird way to react to the impending death of your own mother, he specifically says that the Protagonist recruited him in the past "(You have a future in the past" is the specific line). Kat's son is about ten in the present. In the past, he's going to get progressively younger, not older, and it makes no sense that our man decided to recruit a child into his operation. He obviously is going to continue journeying into the past, meet a younger but still adult Neil, and recruit him then. There's no way for Max to end up as an adult in the past of the film without somehow going through a turnstile BEFORE being brought into ultra-top secret covert ops. If Nolan had intended that, he'd have said so in the film like he always does.

⁠​⁠@@Corn_Pone_Flicksincorrect. Please see the below. Further Nolan has hinted at this theory in interviews. Finally, you omitted the next, crucial-to-context lines from the film. From memory since I’m playing “Well actually” guy here: “You have a future in the past. Years for me, years from now, for you.” Please recall that during the film, we saw Neil invert multiple times. Clearly, anything that happened to him prior to a given moment, he would consider to be ‘the past.’ That doesn’t mean he’s not from the future. In fact, it’s obvious from the dialogue and context that he is. So, Max could’ve grown up, had adventures, inverted, traveling cumulative years into the past, and coexisted with his ~8-year-old self, along with any other “variants”. Regarding how he reacted to Kat, he didn’t always react like she was his mom, sure, but he also didn’t always react like the Protagonist was his friend. The latter didn’t mean he was lying about being tP’s friend. And so, the former doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t Kat’s son.

I love this movie but sometimes I wish in that last shot nolan would of showed us that little red thingy on maxs backpack but only for a split second and then cut to black. But at the same time I can def see why that would confuse even more ppl.

Dunkirk is similar to Tenet in the sense that the main attraction is how Nolan uses time to influence the narrative.

It's nice that Tenet has not been completely forgotten and there is another reaction. I'm getting around to watching. Edit after seeing Your reaction. Tenet is one of my favorite movies. I had the opportunity to see it in IMAX and it made a huge impression - visual and sound. Tenet is a movie that needs to be watched twice - once to get to know the story, and the second time to understand everything and catch all the details. Glad You liked the movie. It is a pity that covid spoiled the premiere and reception of the film. Unfortunately, there is little reaction to the film because of this. By the way, I'd love to see your reaction to my second favorite movie - Alita: Battle Angel. It is an adaptation of the manga (cyberpunk) by Yukito Kishiro created by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez.

Yeahhhh… Alita would be a good one! I remember seeing the poster and everyone freaking out over the eyes, but I think it’s kind of cool looking. I’m adding it to my list, thanks for the wonderful comment!

33:12 not sure if you still care but: There’s radiation supposedly involved in the inversion process. The scientist from earlier in the movie advised the Protagonist that he is “exceedingly lucky” as an “inverted bullet tear through your bah-day” would be devastating or some such. Anyway, the reversion process was to negate the effects of the inverse radiation and save her.

That’s still a little shaky isn’t it? Admittedly as the movie went on I began to realize just how much power Sator had. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the guy could have probably ruined her life in a million different ways.

@@moviyagiyeah. The art issue was among the least of his hooks into her. As you saw, it was quickly abandoned because the rabbit hole went so much deeper.
