Tenet Fight Scene Breakdown
The Tenet fight scene truly expanded the possibilities of what an action scene could look and feel like. By combining forward and reverse motion, director Christopher Nolan and his editor Jennifer Lame helped craft one of the most unique showdowns. But perhaps the most interesting lesson Nolan has given us is how the concept of “perspective” works in film generally and in a fight scene specifically. In this video, we’re going to break down the Tenet freeport fight scene by looking at how subtle changes in composition & framing, editing, and even sound design help create the same fight from two different perspectives.
Framing & Composition
The first difference between Fight 1 and Fight 2 is that much of the action is shot from opposite angles. By shooting each fight from different sides of the 180-degree line, the audience is subconsciously aware that we’re perceiving the fight differently than we did the first time.
One simple trick Nolan does in this thrilling Tenet fight scene is to keep the main subject of each fight center-framed. Granted, the combatants are constantly moving but there are clear moments when efforts are made to keep our eyes focused on the subject in the center of the image. This is especially obvious when the camera moves in unison with the subject, maintaining that center-framed composition.
Editing
Another trick to creating two different perspectives is by cutting to single shots of the main subject. Since most of the Tenet fight scene has both characters on-screen simultaneously, any cut to a single helps tip the perspective scales towards that character. For example, in Fight 1 we cut to the Suit character throwing a barrage of punches; in the corresponding moment in Fight 2, we cut to a single of the Soldier defending against them.
Another editing trick we find in the Tenet fight scene is the use of POV and reaction shots. This combination of POV/reaction is the foundation of film grammar and the audience knows that in these moments, we are seeing what the character sees and their reaction. This simple technique puts the audience in the mindset of the character and, therefore, aligns our perspective with theirs.
Sound Design
Finally, Nolan uses different sound designs for each fight to give the audience a different perspective. In Fight 1, we hear the scene more objectively, as if we were in the room with the characters. Any vocalization we hear is usually from the Suit but, in Fight 2, this is reversed. Now we hear a much more subjective sound design, as we hear what the Soldier hears. The muffled breathing, the compressed air of his gas mask, etc.
None of these techniques are very obvious, and by themselves might not be as effective. But in combination, with these subtle differences in framing & composition, editing, and sound design, we are given two distinct perspectives on the same fight. These techniques are applicable to any scene in any movie but, as you can see, are very effective in such situations as the Tenet inverted fight scene.

Not everyone loves Tenet and that's okay but what you can't deny is Nolan has genius level visualization skills. I can't imagine coming up with such inricate inverted scenes that make complete sense when you view it later in the movie in reverse. The more you see it the more confusing it gets and finally you make sense of it and then forget how it works again!

the one thing I don't like is that everything seems inconsequential/predetermined. It might not be- but since the mechanics and the logic behind of this are not really explained it feels like you are watching a plot that has already happened and therefore can't change.

@@g-bodermalmasfilmsinemaken8867 Sadly, that doesnt make a great movie xd. Over complexity burocracy an other great example of intellectual and philosophical engagment, oh no it isnt... Making something over complex, by making just cut to plot points and throwing philsophical ideas into the mix for engaging action sets, making the first layer unenjoyable. Surelly makes a great movie. Or in other words i think the only think that makes people hyp this movie is the fact that they dont get hours back that they wasted watching it. Because they supposedly understood it. There is no denial that Tenet has some fantastic scenes, i was so hyped after the intro of the movie, only to be utterly disappointed.

Nah, tenet as interersting moments, but how is it a good movie? Once the movie stops editing in a way they viewer can follow, it becomes a mediocre movie. Memento Prestige and Inception have on thing they are consistency, the movie doesnt lose it thread. Tenet in the first half just stops trying to connect plot points and just cuts to them, doubt that makes a great movie, specially when there is discrepency with the prior parts.

Right on the spot I can't quite think of a sequence that uses similar techniques to reinforce perspective, but I immediately thought of one that didn't, and in my opinion a great scene that was somewhat ruined by its ambiguous perspective choices: the batmobile car chase scene in the 2022 The Batman

This film is another leap in the field of Special-effects , sound-design , cinematography, etc,. Christopher Nolan is a bold filmmaker and we all need to learn this from him that's for sure. However There are few scientific terms that Nolan forgot to apply in his movie For example: When the protagonist entered in reversible world through that machine whatever we call it. He should've used nightvision-gogals , bcz light wouldn't enter in his eyes in that hypothetical situation. We able to see our surrounding environment only when light reflected to our eyes by the same environment. So in TENET when everything is going just opposite of him then the protagonist shouldn't suppose to see anything in that reversible environment . Sorry if there is any problem while reading this comment. English is not my first language.

While I never thought about the path of light is reversed, there are a lot of such concepts ignored not because Nolan forgot about them but because it was a creative decision like any other Sci-Fi film.

I wish Tenet was a better paced movie and its characters were a bit more fleshed out. I really enjoyed it after multiple viewings but I think its choppy editing can take away from the experience and understanding the whole plot.

@@StudioBinder A bit of both I guess. If you are driving while reversed do you need a special car that is in reverse also🤔 The car driving backwards makes a decent amount of sense, but the crash or specifically the ‘uncrash’ was very confusing.

None of this seems obvious enough, to pickup while watching, imho. I heard many people were confused after seeing this movie. So elaborate editing and all is a bit pointless if the audience cannot "get the point" without experts explaining.
@blurryface616
@blurryface616 Жыл бұрын
Most of the audience was confused because of the inaudible dialogues and the amount of Physics involved. Editing, Sound Design, and all the aspects had nothing to do with it. If anything they made the film much more comprehensible as discussed in the video.

He actually mentioned that it's not about editing and such, but you need to repeat it anyway? It's an awful film and thankfully it has nothing to do with the professionals that worked on this movie, it's just an insane concept and anyone with half a brain would notice this as garbage.
