TENKO CHABASHIRA: Character Analysis

Hope you guys enjoy the video! Sorry it took a bit longer than expected. I’m still not use to working on analysis stuff while making LP videos which is partially why my schedule is still pretty off at the moment. I also drove to my parent’s for my birthday this week (they live about 9-12 hours away depending on weather/traffic) though too which also contributed to the video being more delayed. As mentioned in the video I do really love Tenko’s character because of the themes presented, I feel like the dynamic between her and Himiko was really well written too. But I do still wish there was more of an explanation as to why she’s so unbelievably naive. Anyways I’ll try to keep you guys updated on Twitter on what the next LP will be and if I decide to play a DDLC mod or do an analysis video for it first. And don’t worry I don’t plan on referencing any of the mods in the analysis video, I know they’re fan made haha. Anyways hope you enjoy!

The reason why her master says not to interact with boys is because it's easier to focus with a clear mind, whereas growing attached to someone clouds your mind making it harder to focus on training. This can become a hindrance, so this is why. (The Master clearly forgot about Female relationships though - as for spending time with Himiko, this is likely to give her extra moral support as the others always blamed Himiko as evident from Ryoma's death. It was only after her death that Himiko used the support, as she felt that she was weak succumbing to Kiyo's lies)

I've noticed that even the people who like Tenko, don't usually look deeper into her character so i'm glad you took the time to make this analysis. Tenko is one of the characters that people expect they won't like before playing the game but actually end up liking a lot. That's what i really liked about her character. Yes, she did throw the phrase "degenerate male" around but it's more of a front she puts up rather than a defining trait. Even with how naive she is, she's actually pretty smart or at least intuitive. Especially relating to understanding what others are going through and trying to steer them in the right direction in her own way. About the part about holding back emotions. I've noticed over he years that i have some problems with this myself so i was caught off guard when this topic came up. I guess i'm also kind of biased with this point but eh xD It really made me think a lot harder about Tenko's character since i didn't expect to see this more serious side of her. (Tbh now i kind of feel like i should read Tuesdays with Morrie) I think this kind of thing is why DR remained popular. You see a lot of different characters with different world views and motivations. You end up seeing a their ideals clash (Kaito and Ouma, Tenko and Himiko etc) None of them are really wrong or right in their way of thinking so you're not forced to side with one or the other. After trials i usually found myself thinking about these deep random subjects and trying to see things from another perspective and that i probably wouldn't have otherwise. This is a bit of a mess 😅😅 I should stop writing these things at 5am. Looking forward to more :3

DRV3 SPOILER You know if they reverse the character line-up of who survives, I feel like Kaede, Kaito, and Tenko would be survivors. They're like the mirroring opposites of the actual survivors and character wise the stronger half compared to the other when they bonded.

I think that was kind of the point. Kaede, Maki and Himiko are the ones that were protected and who needed help to strenghten their feelings. It was what the ending wanted to protray when Shuichi says that their feelings and growth was real. Because those three were the ones who loved and suffered the most and went from weak characters to stronger people able to stand against the mastermind. So when Tsumigi just dismisses those feelings as "fake" he strikes back spitting out how everything he's lives and suffered through the killing game is real to him, especially sine those feelings are what connect him to the characters who are already dead (they are all they have of Kaede, Kaito and Tenko, not to mention the others).

I guess her FTEs show that she's lonely deep down which is sad, but otherwise I think she's too over-the-top with her ridiculous island, and her bizarre sense of morality. Immediately wanting to marry someone because they were the first to scold you is also kinda unbelievable. I also find her really frustrating to watch, because she's not even consciously aware that she's being manipulative. Not to mention the narrative has no idea what to do with her bizarre cult, and just treats it as a weird joke that dies after she does. Overall I think she could've been a really interesting character with a good amount of gray morality, but she's instead taken to the extreme to be really unbelievable and delusional.

I really want a Tsumugi analysis since most of the fandom seems to realllly hate her. [SPOILERS FOR V3] just in case My thoughts on Tsumugi: I did dislike her throughout the game but it was only because she was so boring and she never really played a big part in the first 5 chapters. I enjoyed her FTEs because of the points she made about the cosplay community. Also, the moment of end of her date events actually gave me chills xD This is probably an unpopular opinion but i think she was a bit better of a villain than Junko. I would not be making this point if Junko was just the mastermind of the first game. In the first game we didn't know a lot about Junko so it was an interesting twist. But as we learned more about her in the anime i grew more and more annoyed at how bland the twists will be. (Also her appearance in the second game made me roll my eyes a bit) Tsumugi's motivations feel more real and morbidly understandable. A fan who becomes too obsessed with a game and actually wants to make it a reality to me is far more interesting than an OP goddess who can basically read people's minds. I kind of feel bad for Tsumugi since all these people (the 15 students) wanted to participate in the killing game and came to her of their own free will (going by what she said) And yet she gets pretty much demonized as the worst person who put 15 innocent people in a killing game against their will. I'm not saying she was justified in what she supposedly did. I think it's another thing to consider before calling her the worst person ever. Yes, she was messed up but so were they. Of course, this is is assuming the audition tapes were real. There are lots of theories about what was a lie and what wasn't so i'd love to see more people analysing her :3 This was a bit long 😅 Sorzz

Well, I don't know how people can say she was useless and boring and she didnt' have a personality. If you didn't understand all the references, obviously you would find her boring. Maybe she can be boring for you because you didn't understand all the references she did, but not for the others and the references all fitted the context. 2. She wasn't useless for the first 5 chapters: in chapter 1 she was pinning the blame on Kaede so she had to be careful on what she was saying, in chapter 3 she was a suspect and she gave some clues, in chapter 4 she's the one who saw Miu. 3. Being the mastermind is a good excuse to not have a personality, because she was faking the entire time. The fact that Ouma didn't notice it means that she was really trying hard to hide her true feelings and she did a good job.

I found that one FTE interesting where she goes from hating males to saying they should all die or gotten rid of (paraphrasing) when confronted about her hatred of men. To me, this shows how she "hate men" as she believes whatever she can to be able to believe her master was right. I imagine her tantrums and high emotions are just a biological thing. I didn't really see it as needing to be explained especially since most of the characters have something that doesn't make sense in their FTEs (like Gonta's reptites) which is used to foreshadow that their backstories are fictional.

FTEs before Ch6 I was like, "That's pretty out there, even for DR..." after Ch6 (during Salmon FTE cleanup) it all made so much more sense. I thought that was cool, it went from being kinda dumb to making so much sense if written by an anime-obsessed weirdo like Tsumugi.

I've always had mixed feelings on Tenko. Over time I became to understand her backstory and her mindset but it just feels a bit flat in my opinion. It's like analyzing a child, there's not a lot to it. And since she's a teenager with a child's mindset she is looked down on or is seen as annoying since there is a standard to how girls should be at that age. Compared to Gonta who is also very childlike he's given more leeway because he is more like a cute animal than human. I think Tenko should definitely be given more credit since she's not as stupid as she seems to be but some of her naiveness is slightly annoying/underwhelming. Plus her relationship with Himiko feels a bit empty. I wish they did more with it to make me care about it but it felt kind of forced to me. Those are just my basic thoughts on Tenko's character. She's definitely unique.

Most of the relationships in the game are too forced to get a genuine sympathetic emotions from me. Most of the game is too forced to have much of a long lasting effect on me. Characters like Gonta and Kaede feel more like props to which the smashing of which will force me to feel sad. The subtly is drained from the situation. "KAEDEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!1!!!!!! and Clair De lune. Luv you Shuichi, I feel sad 😢😢😭😭😢😢😭😭😢😢😭😭 twelve out of 10 BEST CHARACTERS EVAR!!!1!ONE Kodaka sure did it again.

Picky Psychology Student I suppose they amplified the relationships this time around so that in the ending when Shuichi said all his and his classmates' feelings were real it made sense since we felt moved along with him. We felt the pain, happiness and sadness along with him and wish to bring an end to Danganronpa so that no one else will suffer. I understand that people can find it annoying or too much but I did find some of the relationships nice this time around. Some others could definitely use more polishing but Danganronpa isn't perfect. Nothing is. But regardless I love Danganronpa and the feelings it gave me.

Allison "At that age" if you understand her mindset like you claim then you'd realize that mental trauma can cause slower mental development. I had a similar character to Himiko and I feel that she broke out of this character a bit because of Tenko. As a teenager you're still figuring things out so I feel like that point is very weak.

I would like a himiko character analysis, I actually think that she might reference Siegfried and roy the magicians cause they're both magicians but himiko was mentioned and shown having a white tiger cub, which they were known for by performing with white tigers and lions, I think its possible since danganronpa has referenced western movies and starts like in your reference videos so it wouldn't surprise me if it is a reference to them, if you do use this can you mention I brought it up since I noticed this when she was shown in the first trailers that shown her promotional art back before the eng release and English trailers

This was a great analysis! For me personally, Tenko was never one of my favourite characters in V3- simply because her motives were never ones I could really empathise with, but hearing you break it down kinda made me re-evaluate her character, so thanks you for that! For the next analysis, I would suggest doing an analysis on Angie Yonaga. This may surprise some people, because her and Tsumugi are both viewed as some of the worst characters in V3, but both of them have always been my favourites. The reason Angie is such an interesting character to me, is because of several events people don't take time to really analyse, her free time event with Kaede where she has a nightmare revolving around Atua being one of her most interesting scenes for me. My own personal theory surrounding Angie is that she does hear the voice of "atua"- as demonstrated in the first trial where she suggests that the killer came out of the bookcase and killed Rantaro, using a secret passageway to do so. The idea of Angie being forced into the role of leadership on her island and going almost power hungry, being a child who everyone listens to without doubt who can get whatever she wants by simply saying it's atuas will. However, despite all of this I believe she was still lonely and isolated. The fact that she warms up to shuichi so quickly suggesting that he's the first person who's ever taken an interest in her not because of atua, but because he's interested in her. (Disclaimer: this does not justify her actions as a dictator/brainwashed in chapter 3!! She is one of my favourite characters because of how interesting her ideas and past are to me, not because she's an "innocent cinnamon roll who did nothing wrong uwu")

I just played all the danganronpa games and just finished danganronpa v3 a couple days ago. I really grew to like tenkos character and im glad that u shone some light on her. I love her childish and naive personality and how good she is with emotions and how she helps everyone in her own way. SPOILERS: My Tsumugi Analysis: Also I know this isn't about Tenko or Himiko, but I saw a comment about Tsumugi and this is my reply. 1. The funny thing is that the game heavily hints at Tsumugi having romantic feelings for Gonta and it shows from the first chapter when she disregards the fact that Gonta wants to be a gentleman and doesn't even acknowledge Gonta's pure intentions and only sees what he can do destructively rather than emotionally, throughout the game untill chapter 3 she slowly but surely sees how sweet and gentlemanly he really is. It shows this when Himiko fell asleep after crying and he carries her back to the dorms, Miu makes a dirty joke saying, "Make sure focus real good on your back, you hear me! You're gonna need that focus if you want to feel her little mosquito bites poking ya!" Tsumugi says, "Gonta would never do that, Gonta is a gentleman after all." And after the voting in chapter 4, Tsumugi is the most emotional when they find out why Gonta wanted to protect them, to save them... 2. And though most people didn't notice this, throughout the game, but in the first chapter you can see Tsumugi in the library most likely trying to see how Kaede would set up the murder plan. Then during one of the free time events in the first chapter you see Tsumugi in the flashback light classroom most likely making a flashback light. The Danganronpa team definitely put much more time than you think on Tsumugi. Also I really like her free time events, they're cute.

I must admit I strongly disliked Tenko while playing the game. I rarely interacted with her because of her ongoing hatred towards almost every male character (I feel like she never really talked bad about Gonta) Another reason why I disliked her was her behaviour towards Himiko and my favorite girl, Angie. She always tried to make her look bad in front of Himiko and the others even though she had no evil intentions. And her actions towards Himiko were always reaching from adorable and loveable, like her pep-talk before the ritual, to creepy and annoying, like her literally stalking Himiko while she was with Angie. This video and her free time events helped me understand her better but she is still among my least liked V3 characters... Great video nonetheless

That was a super thorough analysis, I don't really have anything to add. The quote from the book you mentioned hit pretty close to home for me, I think that's one thing I can respect Tenko for. I'm looking forward to the Kiyo analysis, he's a very sad character the more you look into him :(. I'd also love to see a Tsumugi one! She's one of the most difficult to analyse, with how the ending is and all, but I find there's a ton of interesting characterization for her throughout the game. Interesting video. I’ve always liked Tenko, but never knew why, and this explains it. She’s well-intentioned, perceptive, just naive. She really is a strong character. More than anything, though, I think I would like analysis on KI-B0. He feels unappreciated throughout the game, and somewhat within the community, too. If you observe his actions throughout the class trial, you find that he’s logical, reasonable, but is also compassionate and nice throughout the game. He is very sweet, just somewhat ignorant on social cues. He is one of my favorite characters because I feel he has amazing qualities as a person (or, rather, a robot) and think it would be interested if there was more of an establishment for the foundation of his character.

Actually, in Japanese version, the word Tenko uses to call men is pronounced the same as how the usual word would be pronounced. (男子＝danshi=male - combination of "male" and "kid"), 男死＝danshi - combination of "male" and "death") So, actually it is funny how the cast can recognize this, because they don't see the text like us players

Ah wow, wasn't expecting Tenko this early, but I'm still glad to see this. Excellent analysis yet again, Weeby. I have a theory as to why Tenko is so naive, though there isn't much evidence in-game that supports this. Given how Tenko's parents thought Tenko wasn't going to be able to fit into society normally, it's possible that they kept her around the house for large portions of her childhood. Not interacting with society much would provide an explanation as to why she's so oblivious to many things a normal person would know how to deal with and limited exposure to other people aside from her parents and her master could be why she's so childish in nature. My issue with this idea is that the fact that Tenko's parents sent her to the temple in the first place shows that they *did* want Tenko to fit into society, so it wouldn't make much sense for them to hide her away like this. I can't really think of any other explanation as to why she acts this way other than "she was born naive," but it's probably best to take this theory with a grain of salt.

Wow! I didn’t get around to playing through or looking at Tenko’s free time events, so I never heard her reasoning for hating men. Thanks to this video I now understand her character a bit more, and why she acts the way she does. I guess I needed to look past her sometimes spiky and naive persona to fully know who she is deeper down.

Tenko was weird character for me. At the beginning of the game, almost all of the characters felt kind of uninteresting to me. Tenko however was someone that I immediately didn’t like. Her generalizations were not only rather irrational, but also just annoying honestly. And her advances towards Himiko I found to be very creepy at first. The second class trial made me dislike her more. It was mentioned in the video that Tenko defended Himiko, but other than the Rebuttal Showdown part, it wasn’t so much defending as it was deriding people for suspecting her. That was a problem I had with V3 as a whole honestly. In DR2 we were given the theme of overcoming the doubt you have in others by suspecting them to find absolute belief in them. Here however, characters like Kaito and Tenko act as if suspecting someone in general is accusing them. They enforce the idea of believing blindly without even considering other ideas first. In chapter 3 however, I thought Tenko improved a lot. Rather than rashly confronting Angie when she didn’t agree with her, she decides to observe her. She also explains her advances towards Himiko which clears up a lot of the creepiness surrounding her. And she also asks Shuichi for help despite her misandristic beliefs. I ended up being sad when she died in the end. She ended up being one of the better characters for me in the end. With that being said however, I still can’t tolerate her actions when revisiting chapters 1 and 2, and I’m reminded of how I didn’t like her at first. And it was a real shame how she was only around for one chapter when I started to like her too.

This was a very well thought out analysis, though I love just about every analysis you do, whether it's a character that I really love/am interested in or a character that I'm not crazy for. In all honesty, I wasn't all that crazy for Tenko at first, but as each chapter passed, she grew on me and I loved her by the end. This analysis really did make Tenko's character shine even more for me and made light of a few things too, like how she isn't just a degenerate male hater. I know I'm a bit late but I still would like to point out a few things. First Of all being I did indeed love her character and besides, Kaeda and Maki and Himiko, She was one of my favorite Characters for many reasons. I love how she was so uplifting towards Himiko and there relationship and that whole dynamic between them. In there relationship, I do feel as if it were one sided, Until she died at least. I like the small fact of her liking Idols and her dream of wanting to preform as a magical girl lead her to like Himiko. Her as a child not being able to control her emotions, her and her master coming up with the idea to cope with that is really cool to me. I also thought it was nice how they involved her being naïve into the series. How she was wise and also naïve at the same time, reminding us to believe in what we say while also not forgetting that were human (In my Own interpretation.) Also regarding her sexuality I would also agree that she may be Bi but she just has a sexual preference for girls. As a girl with this preference myself even though she says she hates men, I don't think she does. I think that she just wants you to believe that so the guys will leave her alone. In regarding that she gives Saihara, Rantaro and Ryoma, an "excuse" and wanting to avenge there death's maybe she does hate guys until she can find a reason to not hate them like she did with Saihara not believing in himself, so she is bi and it would just make sense with all the other Bi Characters in the series. I liked the way you made a connection between Tuesdays with Morrie and Tenko's beliefs. I also have read that book and really love it. I didn't even realize the connection until you said something so thanks!

In my opinion, I hate Tenko Chabashira so much because of her hating men and everytime when she criticize men or calls them out as "degenerate males", I feel hurt and offended by it. Also, I don't ship her with Himiko at all because how old is Himiko, (i say Angie is a much better protective friend for Himiko). 1:49 i didn't know Tenko hating men was controversial. Is it still controversial? If people like Tenko, or may have a crush on her, that's fine, she was just a character that wasn't for me and she really annoyed me.

Thank you so much for this! I really love Tenko and I feel people pass her off as an annoying/useless character even though there's so much more to her. Really love you went in depth with her free time events and pointing out all the moments where she shows she's much more than just "man hating". I love her because she's energetic, genuine and honest. Would have really loved if she made it till the end, but I'm glad she at least had her good character moments and a good arc. I'm glad there's more people who love her as well! Edit: As for her being naive, I guess some people are more gullible, but she was also young when she was taught all those things. This is more from my personal experience, and perhaps a little projecting, but it does come across as indoctrination a bit. Maybe that's an extreme way to describe it, but having thoughts fed to someone on young age can really make someone hold on to them till much later in life, possibly always, but I'm probably reading too much into it, haha.
