Sor Alb just like also in Chinese, we call it 英国 (ying guo) which can be derived from 英格兰 (ying ge lan), which means England, and 国 (guo), which means country. However there are people starting to call it 联合王国 (lian he wang guo), which means United Kingdom, but since we use the “[first character of transliteration] guo” all the time, as for the case of France (fa guo), Germany (de guo), America, (mei guo), and in some rare instances Russia (e guo), using lian he wang guo just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

To be fair Persia is a really good name, my Grandma was Iranian and as a kid when I first learned that Iran used to be Persia I spent like a week telling my friends about my heritage

I think persia (the name)should be remembered and given the respect it deserves, it did last for over 2500 years as a name, and the common respect of calling Iran, Iran. As a historian i use this distinction, Iran is 1930 onwards, persia is upto 1930 (i use a rounded number so its easier for people to remember)

Iran has always been Iran. During the Sassanid dynasty, Iran was called Eranshahr. Eran or Iran is the name used for our country for at least 2000 years. Ferdowsi is a very famous poet which writes a a book called Shahnameh 1000 years ago. In this he refers to Iran as a country than Iranians would sacrifice their life for to protect. Greeks did not understand the concept of country or nation ad the lived in city states. As they knew Parsa one if the 4 capitals of Iran they called us Persians and the name stuck. But we always called our country Iran.

Fun fact: Though "Iran" and "Iraq" are similar in English, their counterparts in their actual alphabets vary tremendously: Iran = ایران Iraq = عراق Iran means the land of the noble (Arya meaning noble) and as mentioned in the clip, has been used for literally thousands of years. Iraq's name's origin has been appointed to either an extremely ancient city "Uruk" in the "cradle of civilization", Mesopotamia, which was inhabited in 5 to 6 thousands of years ago,.... .... OR it has been appointed to a Middle Persian word "Eh-raag" (pronounced as 'a rug'), meaning "low-lands" as Iran was mountainous and those lands were lower and between the rivers. Either way, now you know how different those two words are. (^_^) P.S. for those who claim that the alphabet we (Iranians) have right now are NOT ours and was forced, I have to admit that they are correct. Arya doesn't mean noble. its an ethnic term, the term Aryan goes back to the Avestan period when our Proto-Indo-European ancestors started migrating into Eranshahr {Land of Aryans/ named after themselves}. they described themselves as Aryan not just noble people. to be an Aryan is to be of Aryan blood. its the same as being Greek or African. you cant claim to be Aryan if you are not of the Blood.

We have historical documents of Kings introducing themselves as king of Iran from a long time ago. also a lot of which wasn't even persian themselves . We have Kings with different nationality such as ,partian , madian, lor, ..... So it wouldn't make any sense to call it persian. Also you can read old Iranian books like shahnameh of ferdosi as a proof of my words.

@yabghus No, they called themselves Iranians. Eranshahr is what the Sassanids called themselves. (their whole official name was Empire of the Iranians as translated into modern English). The people referred to their land as Iran, just like they do today. Because they were Iranians. "The Persian kings who threw people to the lions, they made human rights?" Cyrus the Great was one of the first emperors to outlaw slavery. Zoroastrianism is derived from the same root as all other Indo-European religions, but is a proper monotheistic religion as it only has one proper creator god. Note that the two great spirits of good and evil are NOT the creator deity.

The Achaemenids did the whole, list every place we've ever conquered, thing when introducing themselves. You also had other peoples like the Medes, Parthians, Bactrians, Sogdians, Khwarezmians, etc. who were Iranic, but not Persian. Today the term Iranian is used for the nationality. That means that every citizen of Iran is Iranian. Then you have the term Iranic which is referred to ethnicities that speak Iranian languages, such as Kurds, Persians, Lurs, Talysh, Pashtuns, Pamiris, Tajiks, Gilaks and many others.

Afghan here. Iran actually refers to the Iranian Plateau, where I too am from. Also, our Pashto language is linguistically an Iranian language. Therefore, I would find the continuation of the name Persia for the modern country more correct, since we Afghans aren't modern Persians, but actually Iranian. "Iran" should refer to the highlands from Kurdistan to Tajikistan and the indogermanic languages spoken across the vast region. Persia should be the proud name of our great modern day neighbour. If you mean the Persian empire, that was destroyed by the Muslim Arabs almost 1000 years ago and Persia was hereon forth ruled by Persianzed Turks. Wanna know why the UK insisted on calling it "Persia"? In 1907, the first map of Iran's departition was drawn by Britain and Tsarist Russia, which was called the "Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907" aka the St. Petersburg agreement. According to this map, Iran was schemed to be divided into 3 parts, i.e. 2 zones of influence and a middle neutral zone (Persia). South for British influence and North for Tsarist Russian influence. It was based on this plan that Iran was occupied in the first World War. The old divide & conquer as usual.

I can't even count the number of Iranians I've met in the USA who said they were Persian when asked their nationality. Because of the attitude of most Americans regarding Iran the "Persians" were too embarrassed to say Iranian.

Iran had been the name of the present day border of the country ever since the beginning of the Sassanid Empire. Persia, on the other hand, includes Afghanistan, Central Asia and Pakistan in the east and Iraq, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Levant in the west.

I read somewhere that in the last few years the Iranian government gave up and allowed Persia to be used colloquially as a secondary name (many countries including the USA/United States of America go by colloquial names as well as the official names). Also, Iranians living in the USA usually call their language Farsi. In the Burton translation of "The Thousand Nights and a Night", the country is called "fars".

Persians captured and dominated our lands and called it Persia, till the 20th century Reza Shah understood if they call it Persia they will lose Kurdistan, Azarbayjan, Baluchistan, etc. because they are not Persians. So they created a fake nation called Iran. Iran or Ariyana in the Persian mythology is nowadays Khorasan, Afghanistan, And Turkmenistan. Kurdistan is not Iran. It's just dominated by Persians.

The Greek historians had called Iran, Persia, as the rulers of Iran came from the province of Pars (or Fars) that also exists today and its capital is the town of Shiraz. This is why Iran was known as Persia outside the country. Well, this is not unusual or a mistake. For example the Netherlands is also known as Holland because the rulers were from the province of Holland. The country of Iran has always been known as Iran by its own people however. They never called themselves Persians in Iran. Most countries have internal and external names. Germany is also the external name of Deutschland, and Greece is the foreign name for Hellas, and Egypt's real name is Almisr. Iran actually means: " The domain of Aryans"

There are MANY places that called different names by different peoples, and it's not limited to just countries. The Baltic Sea for example is known as the Eastern Sea in Sweden, which makes sense because for them the Baltic is right off their east coast. I think we should be respectful of other people's cultures but shouldn't be expected to bend over backwards for them. If Iran wants to be called Iran, that's their right because it is their country and being called something else made up by foreigners would be really annoying. But some names are so ingrained into people's minds that they are just thoughtlessly accepted. Germans call their country Deutschland but hardly anyone in America knows that so we all call it Germany.

The problem is then the other original Iranian people, such as the Kurds, Lurs, Mazandaranis, Gilakis, Baloch, Pashtuns... etc... won't regard themselves as Iranian when they start to think that Persia is the real name for Iran and therefore only the Persians are Iranian... this whould lead them to want separatism and it already has thanks to European powers!

I had a friend in high school who came from Iran. This was after the revolution in 1978, and since the U.S. and Iran didn't have a good relationship, when asked where he was from/what his nationality was, he would reply Persia/Persian, thinking that most American teenagers wouldn't know that Iran and Persia are basically the same thing. Of course, he was right that most didn't know. When I asked him and he gave his Persia response, I asked him why he didn't just say Iran and without giving him a chance to answer, I guessed the reason and he acknowledged it. I told him no one (at school, anyway) will care that he's Iranian and won't hold it against him. And no one did.

You are wrong at this point. Persian and Iranian are *NOT* the same. Persian is one Iranian ethnicity of many ethnicities. If u would ask me, if I would say if I am Persian or Iranian, I would say that I am Iranian. But why? The reason is: Not every Iranian is Persian and Iran was also not called Persia. It was called Eranšahr or Iranšahr.

Iran has always been a native name for the past 3000 years and it is a sacred name among Iranians which means land of Aryans. Even during the period when western countries were calling it Persia, the people of Persia were always calling it Iran. The native name of Iran was officiated in 1935 by the king of Iran at that time who was Reza Shah. The only country who refused to call it Iran was Great Britain who continued calling it Persia until mid 1950s but from then on, they started calling it Iran like the rest of the world.
