Water/flooding/storm surges cause more death and destruction than the wind or even the tornadoes these things whip up. I worked disaster mgt in Florida for 20+ years. This is as bad or worse than most storms I worked. Resembles Cedar Key (who also had a bad storm surge from Helene) in Kate and Elena. I think it was Kate, we went in even before the storm had moved out completely, because so many people in Cedar Key, the beaches and the town of Suwannee, refused to evacuate…mostly older folks who probably had no way out. We found a handful of survivors, 12 deceased in those first hours. We had several older men living in an old, still standing Victorian home. Their first floor was devastated…but they’d lived there all their lives..I think they were brothers. They had moved a lot upstairs and refused to leave…the county officials had actually given us their names and address to check on them..but in a moment of levity, had written that we wouldn’t get them to leave, so don’t try. They had food in coolers, non-perishables, large 20gal jugs of water downstairs, but a bunch of gallons upstairs. They promised us they’d be fine, their library was upstairs and they planned on reading, cooking on their camp stove or grill on their balcony…this was long before social media or even “prepping” was a thing and it fascinated me. They gave me an old book on storing food..I treasured that book for many years. And while my kids, family and friends have teased me over the years and said I was crazy to always have emergency supplies…I’ve lost track of the MANY times my supplies came in handy not just for me, but having enough to share with neighbors. Stock up a little at a time and you can do it even on a small fixed income.

We used to live in Asheville. It's really hard to watch because so many good memories are associated with this wonderful city. But what amazes me and gives me hope is how many people/groups all over our state are finding ways to help. I hope the resilience and strength of Western North Carolina, North Georgia and Tennesee will cause these areas to bounce back - with city planning that creates lasting, durable and livable futures for everyone... _everyone_ in these communities.

If you really wanted to help then you would have told them not to be so wicked for the wrath of God has judged these evil towns. They thought the Lord will not see our wickedness but they became prideful of their sin. Now they have been humbled and thankful to still be alive. Pride before a great fall and they were found guilty. It's a lesson this nation better heed before even greater destruction comes from above....
