My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon at the builtmore 42 years ago and have visited often over the years. We had a trip planned to go there for Christmas this year for our 43rd anniversary. We are so sad this has happened to the people of Ashville and all other people and areas devastated by this hurricane. I pray for no further loss of life and for restoration. God, please help all of these families.

This is Biltmore village which is right outside the gates to the historic Biltmore house. This place is pron to flooding so in bad times it gets the worse of the worst. They support a presidential candidate who says climate change is a hoax. All I keep hearing over the last few years is how “ they have never seen weather like this before” yeah maybe we are the cause. I still feel for the people but they do nothing to change things they only make it worse.

This is breaking my heart. I lived in Candler right outside of Asheville for 20 years. I moved 2 years ago to Georgia. So many places that I know and love have been destroyed. I keep breaking into tears thinking about it. My son still lives there and I have many friends there as well. They all seem safe but had a lot of damage to their homes with trees falling on them. If there’s one thing that’s become painfully obvious it’s that the emphasis on wind speed when judging the severity of hurricanes is a poor indicator at best. It’s the water, whether in the form of a tidal surge or a torrential rainfall and the accompanying flooding that causes the most damage, both to infrastructure and people’s lives, as well as the death toll.

God bless them all - this is heartbreaking & I feel their devastation as bad as this is there is always hope & alternate ways to get by - I've had to move 16x since 1987 due to destruction & just endured another massive flood myself on July 4th of this year - I've decided I'm tired of working so hard to watch it all get destroyed & have started researching van life - I can travel & work on the road & leave when the weather gets bad - it's nice to live & have a community to come back to but loosing it all doesn't mean life still can't be good - sending prayers to all those suffering & grieving right now & hoping they have the will to keep on keeping on!

I feel for these people, Myself and my parents have been here as well. I was 6yrs old and we lost everything in the Flood of 85 in WV. I remember someone beating on our door really early in the morning (between 4 and 5 am) telling us the river was rising and to get out now. we lived a couple hundred yards from the Cheat river. Within minutes the water was coming through our basement door. By 10 am our house and literally 99% of the town Albright WV was literally wiped off the map. Flooding like that was never seen before, nor since. I can't remember the storms name but it was caused by the remnants of a stalled hurricane just like this was.

Water/flooding/storm surges cause more death and destruction than the wind or even the tornadoes these things whip up. I worked disaster mgt in Florida for 20+ years. This is as bad or worse than most storms I worked. Resembles Cedar Key (who also had a bad storm surge from Helene) in Kate and Elena. I think it was Kate, we went in even before the storm had moved out completely, because so many people in Cedar Key, the beaches and the town of Suwannee, refused to evacuate…mostly older folks who probably had no way out. We found a handful of survivors, 12 deceased in those first hours. We had several older men living in an old, still standing Victorian home. Their first floor was devastated…but they’d lived there all their lives..I think they were brothers. They had moved a lot upstairs and refused to leave…the county officials had actually given us their names and address to check on them..but in a moment of levity, had written that we wouldn’t get them to leave, so don’t try. They had food in coolers, non-perishables, large 20gal jugs of water downstairs, but a bunch of gallons upstairs. They promised us they’d be fine, their library was upstairs and they planned on reading, cooking on their camp stove or grill on their balcony…this was long before social media or even “prepping” was a thing and it fascinated me. They gave me an old book on storing food..I treasured that book for many years. And while my kids, family and friends have teased me over the years and said I was crazy to always have emergency supplies…I’ve lost track of the MANY times my supplies came in handy not just for me, but having enough to share with neighbors. Stock up a little at a time and you can do it even on a small fixed income.

It was the runoff. The valleys filled up with water in hours. I used to live in south Asheville and have been threw some bad storms. I totally see how this happened, it is just shocking that there was so much water so fast. I am glad I moved out because the part of Asheville I used to live in was flooded out too. A lot of good people out there in desperate need of help.
