My favorite part about this video is the heavy breathing.

He got the song from my grandmother Elma Dennis. Because I remember him coming to our home and talking to my grandmother.

If I may say so-- I believe this is one of the greatest songs of all time. It combines the (subjectively) unpalatable sound of contemporary country with gospel and lyrics that transcend traditional country song tropey lyrics. It’s so good it defies labeling-- it’s just an incredible song in every possible way and these guys created a treasure of inspiration to actually appreciate our lives, and right the wrongs, or give the forgiveness we’ve been denying. The first time I heard it I was in tears because it made me realize I was not living my life. I was not thriving. I was merely surviving. The difference between surviving and living like you were dying was profound to me. I was too young to appreciate what giving forgiveness that you were denying meant, but I would endeavor to be a righteous man and the words would come back to me when I needed them most. Appreciate this life. After that, I began to study buddhism with Alan Watts and the mantra live like you were dying has been singing in my heart ever since. I love you guys and thank you for taking the time to talk about the genesis of this song!

I just wish more people knew about your songs. I really love ‘the good stuff’ and “a baby changes everything”. Especially the live version you sang acoustically in a talk on KZbin.

Every issue in Country Weekly had a story behind a certain song, and I found it very interesting to read how a song came to be; I still enjoy reading and listening to videos and articles behind a song, no matter what genre it is!
