The guns will be used by highly trained teachers willing to protect the students from armed, active intruders. The intruders will NOW know that they are entering a zone protected with weapons, instead of looking at a big sign outside the school indicating the school is weapon free. The identity of the armed teachers is kept from students and parents because sometimes an armed shooter is an angry relative or a disgruntled student. I'm a retired elementary school teacher in TN. I've put my children through active shooter drills, locked my doors, told them to be quiet as mice while ushering them to sit together on the floor near a wall. Enough said. I am for selective arming in the schools.

On Monday, the group leading the opposition to this bill presented the state legislature with 5,000 signatures of people opposed to this bill. They were quite proud of that number and claimed it was proof that Tennesseans are opposed to this bill. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, as of January 2024, there were over 720,000 people in Tennessee who have valid permits to carry a handgun, even though state law was changed two years ago to allow carrying a handgun without a permit - the permit now only removes some restrictions on where a gun can be carried. 5,000 signatures of people claiming that carrying guns is not the solution, and over 720,000 people who not only think carrying a gun is the solution but went through the required training, fingerprinting, background check, fees, and testing to actually carry a gun.

When a fire breaks out in a school, faculty have fire extinguishers, and other fire mitigation systems through out the school that are positioned in areas to help control a fire before the fire department can get on scene minutes later. Why is it UNACCEPTABLE to have armed personnel, already present to respond to a deranged person in the school, who has made a CONSCIOUS DECISION to act on their HOMICIDAL INTENTIONS with a firearm? The duration of any mass shooting is solely dependent on how fast an armed counter response can get bullets into the shooter. It DOES NOT matter if that armed response come from the police, security, teacher, janitor, or the lunch lady! Police on the way will not save the day!

@@krill6969 The students protesting at the legislature against this bill, are from the Nashville school system. A couple years ago, several Nashville school principals told the Nashville police department that the only way they would allow police officers to be assigned to their school, was if the officers were unarmed, due to the trauma that students would experience from seeing the officer's gun. The Nashville police department rejected that idea, telling them to hire their own unarmed security. That led to the Nashville school system's "safety ambassador" program, where they hire an unarmed guy to walk around the school checking the doors to make sure they are closed and locked. They are called "ambassadors", instead of "guards", to prevent any trauma from the students being told that they are being 'guarded'. The school system has recently been claiming that this program exists because there is not enough funding for police officers to be assigned to schools, but last year the state legislature was considering funding to hire additional police officers and assign them to schools, but the same group that is opposed to this bill was opposed to last year's efforts to hire more police officers. The people in Tennessee claiming that armed teachers would be a danger to students, have already made it clear that they consider police officers to be a danger to students.

Not only is it OPTIONAL, meaning your "average teacher" isn't going to have a gun in her desk, but it would require the teacher that does want to carry at school to take a minimum amount of firearms training? The only thing currently keeping an unstable teacher from bringing a gun to school, is that they have been told to not do that. That point was inadvertently made by Bo Mitchell, a member of the Tennessee legislature who was opposed to this bill, when he brought up a recent incident of a daycare worker being arrested in his district. Police were called because the daycare worker was threatening her coworkers, and when police arrested her, they found a loaded handgun in her purse inside the daycare, with another gun in her car parked outside.

Exactly where will liability fall if a student gets ahold of the gun and kills or injures? if a teacher accidently discharges a firearm and kills or injures a student? if a teacher intentionally shoots at an intruder and accidentally kills or injures a student? In Tennessee, law enforcement officers are the only people who do not carry full personal liability for every bullet that leaves the barrel of their gun. Only when officers violate department policies, are those officers hit with full personal liability for each shot they fire. This point is hammered into the head of each person that goes through the class to get a Tennessee Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit, and getting that permit is step one in the process laid out in this bill for any teacher that wants to carry a gun. If they volunteer to carry a gun, they will be told up front that they will be risking civil and criminal action each time they pull the trigger. Contrary to the concerns voiced by people opposed to bills like this, it is a process where there end up being some people that decide they want to go through the training and carry a gun, but when the negative aspects are laid out for them, they decide they want nothing to do with it. Same thing happened when the program was started to arm airline pilots - a lot of airline pilots started the application process, but then gave up on it.

The same group that was shouting against this bill when the Tennessee legislature passed it, was ranting last summer that the Tennessee legislature was trying to turn schools into prisons, when bills to improve doors, locks, and add security cameras were being debated.

The shooting that rarely gets mentioned, is the one in Memphis from just under a year ago, where a shooter was not able to get into a Memphis private school, because they had recently replaced the doors at the entrance with steel security doors. The shooter tried to shoot his way through the steel doors, but still couldn't get past the doors and was shot outside the school when Memphis police got there.

The teacher is required to keep the gun concealed on their person. Leaving the gun unsecured could result in criminal charges against the teacher. This bill allows teachers to volunteer to carry a gun on their person, but it imposes training requirements and personal liability on any teachers who choose to do so. The bill's sponsor indicated that he would be surprised if more than about 3 percent of teachers applied, and he expected the number of teachers that successfully complete the screening and training requirements to be much less than that.

Teachers and employees carrying guns is really a bad idea. Inevitably there will be victims from the guns they carry. In crises, you will have too many bystanders with guns making judgement calls and operator-mistakes with those guns, as police professionals make different mistakes, even after all their training and on-the-job experience, but in a much more professionally defined, assessed situation. You just substitute many more untrained undisciplined other people also on site, for personal reasons, and perhaps the wrong reasons, now making those mistakes with deadly weapons in close proximity to young frightened children having no experience with trauma like this and not sure who to listen to, among multiples of teachers and school officials with guns and policemen and officials with guns, all giving their best and maybe conflicting orders as the event unfolds and all become aware of each other. We have seen police unable or unwilling to confront an armed gunman on site, and now have as many more teachers and school officials pointing guns also converging on that gunman in a class with many frightened children, as adults converging with good but personal ambitions to save the children, ...now! All these children and professional police and non-professional teachers are sudden deputies unknown to the others, perhaps. An unknown number of adults with different levels of skills, and different levels of understanding, anxiety, and fear, all coming together in this crowded crisis, with many children in a school with at least one unhinged person carrying one more gun. We need to remove guns from every hand, unless that professional has the skill, training, and need for that gun in his life, now, which justifies the risk of one more gun set loose in our society, and it's worth that risk.

That's a big part of why this bill requires that the school principal and any police officers assigned to the school will be the only people in the building that know that a teacher is armed. The teacher will be required to keep the gun concealed on their person, and any teachers that volunteer to be armed will have to go through training that will cover how to retain control of their concealed gun.

Roughly half the states already have some form of law allowing at least some teachers to be armed. Tennessee has allowed teachers and staff at colleges to be armed for several years, with even fewer restrictions than this bill places on teachers of grades K through 12.

Uvalde had cops who ignored their training. Nashville has trained cops who proved, just over a year ago, that they know how to follow their training when there is a school shooting. Not long after that, a private school in Memphis proved the value of having steel doors, instead of glass doors, when a school shooter was unable to get into the building and was shot by responding police officers. The group that was most vocal in their opposition to this bill, was also very much opposed to a bill to pay for improved school doors, last summer, claiming that the state legislature was trying to turn schools into prisons.

I find it a huge problem that parents cannot be notified if their child’s teacher has a firearm. Parents should have a right to know if their child is in close proximity to a firearm.

They don't want the parents to know the location of the guns because sometimes it is a child's relative who starts a violent altercation.

There are around 6,900,000 people in Tennessee, and as of January 2024, a bit over 720,000 of those people have a valid permit to carry a handgun. Around two years ago, the state legislature passed a law allowing carry of a handgun without a permit, but the permits are still issued because the permit removes a few restrictions on where a gun can legally be carried. This means that if your child is out in public in Tennessee, around adults that the child does not know, odds are fairly high that the child is in close proximity to a firearm. It is simply astounding how many people have moved to Tennesse in recent years and are shocked when this is explained to them. Some even refuse to believe it, claiming they don't see any guns, until the more visible guns are pointed out to them.
