State lawmakers in Tennessee passed a hotly contested bill that would allow teachers to be armed in school. If Gov. Bill Lee signs the bill, Tennessee teachers will be allowed to carry guns when approved by school officials as long as the teachers meet certain requirements. NBC’s Priya Sridhar reports for TODAY.

Nashville, TN public school principals strongly objected to that, two years ago. Their solution was to create the position of "safety ambassador", which is someone who spends the day walking around the school checking that all the doors are closed and locked. The doors were locked at the Covenant school, which is mentioned in this report as the private school that had a school shooting a year ago. The Covenant school shooter simply broke the glass in the doors and crawled through.

Yep that was already proposed and anti-gun lobby snubbed it. The truth is the anti-gun advocates want more school shoktings so they can keep pushing to ban guns. These sorts of efforts prevent that from happening. That's why they're drying about it.

If a teacher was armed last year when the school shooting took place maybe those kids that were killed would still been alive!!!!!!! Think about it!!!

or maybe their would have been more killing from teachers that are having a bad day.. Remember Teachers are not God, they also have bad days and can flip the switch. Also, kids these days speak their minds and some teachers think its a bad thing.

Teachers should not be expected to risk their lives for this though. They are there to teach, not to face a gunman.

@@sydneyh400 Maybe that is why this bill was written to only give the teachers the option to volunteer to get the additional training and carry a gun.

Haiti and South Africa both have strong Gun control Laws, but still both these countries have extremely high Homicide Rates. Grenades are Banned in Sweden, but Still Sweden is Gun capital of Europe, with gang members attacking each other with Grenades in Broad Daylight in Sweden. Note: IN AN UNARMED Society its only criminals have access to weapons and not ordinary people, just look at Haiti, South Africa and Sweden, whereas an Armed Society is much Safer as Ordinary people with Access to Weapons can defend themselves against Criminals

So rather having a volunteer, capable, and trained armed teacher respond immediately to an active shooter situation, opposers would rather wait have kids wait minutes on end for police to arrive and handle the situation?? How could there be opposers to this. The person behind the firearm gives purpose to the gun. To either murder or be the an effective defender to the ones who want to murder. I’d rather send my kids to a school that has trained volunteer armed teachers than just a school defended by a “gun free zone” sign.

The same people that were opposing this bill, were opposed to funding for better doors, locks, and security cameras for schools, last year. Their arguments against making improvements to the school buildings to keep attackers out, was that the legislature was trying to turn schools into prisons.

What if the teacher is having a really bad day and decides to bring a gun to school without being authorized to do so or even telling their principal about it? The only thing currently stopping them from doing that, is that they have been told to not do that. Bo Mitchell, a member of the Tennessee legislature who opposed this bill, inadvertently made that point in his arguments by bringing up a recent incident in his district where a daycare worker was making threats against her coworkers and when police arrested her, they found a loaded handgun in her purse inside the daycare, with another gun in her car parked outside.

A teacher could have a bad day and bring a gun to school regardless... So what is even the point of your comment? I would like to see your data that shows arming teachers leads to more school shootings.

Teachers aren't trained in a field of law enforcement. The people making this decision to promote this idea have no idea what it's like to supervise and teach children. How can a teacher pay attention to their job if they also have to carry a weapon and be accountable for it's location all day. If it's on their person then it's a distraction to students. If it's in a desk then it's a distraction to the teacher when they need to be focused. It's more time away from a teacher's life if they have to attend classes to be in law enforcement and mental health checks.

Try doing some research on the topic. The bill allows teachers to volunteer to do this, so it will be their own decision to take on the additional training and responsibility. If they don't want to do it, then they aren't required to be armed. The bill requires the teacher to keep the gun CONCEALED on their person when they are inside the school, with the principal and any School Resource Officers assigned to the school being the only people in the building knowing that the teacher is armed, so it won't be a distraction for the students. Leaving the gun in a desk could result in criminal charges against the teacher, since that is an action that is not authorized by this bill.
