Definitely working on a power change should be the goal at this stage. A true curve would be easy on the arm, but very few players can locate and get that past MLB hitters in 2022. He'll start working in a slider eventually if/when he hits MLB, and it will be a truly nasty thing, but it'll put a lot of strain on his elbow and there's no way I'd be letting him throw it when he's still throwing the hardest fastball on the planet playing against college kids. But yeah, right now he should be in the lab on that 91mph changeup with the nasty arm-side run. I wouldn't advise teaching him the split because 1) it's anecdotally hard on the elbow and 2) It's almost never in the zone, and this kid should be trying to steal more strikes instead of trying to somehow increase his swing-and-miss.
@jeffdarnell79422 жыл бұрын
He better be REALLY good at his delivery!! Most power pitchers that add a change up have a movement specific change when they let go of the change-up, and it's easy to read, especially the better hitters in College, and especially the Majors.

The only way I stood a chance of putting the barrel on the ball was shortening up the swing. Doesn’t take a big swing and in fact flick of the wrist will smoke high 90’s if you put the barrel on it. I’ve seen high 90’s guys get rocked before thinking they would come in and shove. That was also with metal bats where you can get by missing the sweet spot.
