Tennessee is an underrated, dangerous team. They have a new head coach and play a style of ball that wears you down. However, they're still learning on the fly how to finish close games. They've lost five SEC games by a total of only 15 points. And, these are all teams that will be in the NCAA Tournament (South Carolina, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt). Plus, they beat Iowa, who recently beat USC. So, it's not a total surprise that they beat UConn. They are SEC tested. Iron sharpens iron.

Take away Tennessee's best player, and they would have been in big trouble too....as would ANY top WNCAA team. By the NCAA's Tennessee's platoon offensive will be figured out by the other top teams. UConn is still figuring out how to play with Fudd and Griffen recently returning. There's too many players to sub in and out. They have a 2 platoon system as well - only mix and match it more. I was surprised Strong was a bit shell-shocked by the away environment. But better now than in March. She'll learn from it. Count UConn out of making the Final Four at your own risk. They've only missed 2 FF's in the past 17 years.

Tennessee plays a different brand of basketball. Kim Caldwell just signed five 5 stars and the number 2 recruiting class in the country. When she gets on the level of the South Carolinas and UCONNs in talent, Tennessee may just get to the top. I think lots of players will go to a program where there is no sitting on the bench. You arrive and they coach you to play now. Who wouldn't dig that? Dawn's players play about 20 minutes a game at S Carolina. If you pay and play them, they will come. I believe Caldwell's first recruiting class is top 5 nationally.
@pastorpersonality
@pastorpersonality 2 күн бұрын
@@russellsnyder4437 Dawn does that because she has the quality depth. 10 players could technically start. Caldwell does it as a philosophy or strategy. Staley did not start doing this until very recently, the last couple of years. So it’s a little bit like comparing apples to oranges. Dawn gets away with it because she has three national championships. The point I’m trying to make is that Caldwell does not have that and it will take some time to get to that level.

This is a spot on analysis. UConn is losing big games because they are not making shots, losing on the boards and not playing tough enough. Basically, they are not making basic basketball plays under pressure. Simple as that.

It comes down to not having a reliable center to control the middle. If El Alfy ever comes around they will be formidable to go all the way. Strong at 6-2 isn't quite big enough despite all her skills. Geno is still playing with the lineup as he has 12 players who can all handle significant minutes. And with Fudd and Griffen recently back, the team still hasn't figured out the best rotations....but they will by March.

As a Bruin fan, I can give you an outsider's perspective. I didn't think UConn played THAT poorly. The Vols coach said she thought the home crowd was worth 10 - 15 points. Well, if they were worth even 5 points, then that would be enough to put them over the top. If this game was at UConn, the Huskies win, IMHO. Also, Tennessee came within an inch of beating LSU, Oklahoma, Texas and other highly ranked teams. Translation: this is a very good Tennessee team. UConn didn't lose to a slouch, and with some minor adjustments, would have prevailed.

You're absolutely correct. Their loss to Notre Dame early in the season should've been a clue. Since then, Uconn played against marginal teams. The loss to Tennessee should be a wake-up call to Gino and especially the players to get their shit together. Their number 6 ranking is misleading to the girls and us. Uconn will get wiped out in the early rounds. So sad. In fact, I don't know how in hell they got as far as they did last year in tournament round-robin. This is the opening paragraph from Dan Connelly's Uconn Blog after the game: "The No. 5 UConn Huskies flopped in an 80-76 loss on the road at the No. 19 Tennessee Volunteers on Thursday night. The Huskies shot just 5-20 from three, went 19-35 on layups and struggled in the game’s biggest moments." There, you have it in a nutshell. People can talk all they want about what the coach said or did or didn't do, player rotations, play in the paint, and on and on. At the end of the day they shot 25% from 3 and 54% on layups. Let me say that again; 54% on layups. At the end of day, the point of the game is to put the ball in the basket. I watched the game. With the exception of maybe 1 or 2, their 3's were good looks. At some point, players need to play....and make shots. And if you were the #1 recruit in the country, like both Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd were, you are expected to put the ball in the basket. Between the two of them and one of their top 2 bench players, Ashlynn Shade, they shot a combined 10 of 34. That's 29.4%. That's not just from 3 mind you, that's overall. You aren't going to win many games in Big East play shooting that way let alone against ranked teams. I have no problem with what Geno said about Paige after the game. He's done that to every great player that's ever come through the doors at Gampel over the last 40 years. Based on his 11 National Championships and being the winningest coach in the history of college BB, I'm going to give him a pass this time. No actually, every time. It's quite clear to me who the best player on this team is and her name is Sarah Strong. She can literally do it all and is one of the top players in the country. And she doesn't melt under pressure when the lights are the brightest. Yes, 5 turnovers against Tenn. but she was always trying to make something happen. Geno was right when he said that the best players on this team need to play like it. With the exception of Strong, I'm no longer confident that they can in the biggest games. That's why Strong should be the number 1 Option in the offense going forward with KK at the point. Aubrey the #1 option off the bench. It hurts for me to say that because I'm a huge fan of Paige and Azzi. In fact, they are all great kids. But if we are talking solely basketball...

Agreed. I’ve had an uncomfortable feeling about this team since Notre Dame and a sense that everyone’s been giving them the benefit of the doubt throughout the Big East season. If they were at the elite level that ND, SC, UCLA etc. seem to be they’d be running the Big East teams out of the building every night. And they’re not. Oh, sometimes they do, but there have also been games that were closer than they should’ve been well into the second half. And no matter what nice things Geno says about them, no one in the Big East is at that elite level, and UConn has too often not been dominant consistently for 4 quarters. They just haven’t looked the part, and they have one more chance to change the narrative.

What a bunch of hogwash. The box score shows UConn outplaying Tenn is most categories. Shooting was weak on both sides. Tenn out-rebounded them by 12. But UConn was well ahead on steals, assists, and fast break points. On a better shooting night NOT in Tennessee's building, UConn would have won by 10 or more. UConn won 3 of the 4 quarters....AND Tennessee struggled just as much in many key moments of the game. It was a close game with only a 5 pt margin. Both teams are good and very capable of getting to the final four. UConn made the Final Four last year with a decimated team and both KK and Shade starting. Their reduced playing time this year has actually hurt the team. Trying to figure how to get KK and Griffen back into the lineup is hurting them right now. But it's probably a necessary step to get the lineup right by March. UConn had a very OFF night on 3's...and Tenn's pressure and size/athleticism had a lot to do with it. uconnhuskies.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2024-25/tennessee/boxscore/24485

So far this year the U Conn shooters don’t shoot well in big games. The word “choke” comes to mind. U Conn would have won this game and the USC game with simply an average shooting percentage (for them). The Norte Dame game was a different story. If they lose decisively to South Carolina, they will be looking like a second-tier team compared to the top four in the current rankings. But even so, U Conn will be dangerous in the tournament if they go on a shooting streak. If not, no final four.

Geno nailed it in game: missed layups and keeping the Vols out of the lane. Penetration gives up layups, breaks down defenses for ORB's and gives up ft's from late rotations. IMHO, they'll need El Alfi to make some noise in the tournament and should let her play through. At the start of the UConn/Creighton game she changed two shots. When Geno subbed her out (early) the Jays made three straight layups and missed a fourth. And Paige isn't looking like a #1 pick 😕

I would say toughness is the wrong word. There was an clear difference is size between both teams and that's where Tennessee held all the Cards. They also made the type of shots that many of us were not expecting, something not from 3s and very difficult makes. This was a HOME game for Tennessee which by the way as you clearly pointed out, has already had close losses against very good teams. So only those not understanding the game of basketball would call this some stunning upset. Also the most Glaring issues was that UCONN best shooters could not throw it in the Ocean and wasn't just because of Tennessee's defense. Who by the way needed this win way more currently then UCONN did. Losing a Regular Season Road game to a team like Tennessee is hardly a problem for UCONN. 1000% agree. Specially on who they should be starting. When you're going to war or play in a hostile environment you need to know who you can count on. KK showed up last and this year. KK should be starting and eating up minutes. Shade is too streaky and had the same issues last year and this year with tough teams. Kaitlyn is not impactful in big games. The same with Azzi. Pressure reveals character and mettle. Geno's rotation is bananas. Also, as you already mentioned the timeout was ill-timed. The coaching staff didn't prepare the team or understood who they were playing. UConn has too many guards who cannot shoot, not athletic enough and lacks poise and tenacity. PB was better last year and in her freshman year. I don't know if PB is just tired or the pressure is getting to her. PB should be working on her 3s to make her un-guardable. All the energy PB spent on social media should have been spent developing her 3pt shooting. People are saying PB is like Ionescu when she cannot consistently shoot 3s at a high percentage. Miles and Hidalgo even Juju seem to be better 3pt shooters. There's nothing worse than to see talent wasted and taken for granted.

That is simply what's missing. She got everyone to play with intensity and drive. That said, (and I'm not getting into we need bigs/and recruiting stuff) with what we have now and you may disagree, the starting 5 should be strong/Paige/ash/KK and Aub when she can play more ) or share w/Ice and then with subs after that. Would not surprise me at all if Sarah Strong takes a hard look at the future of UConn and enters the portal after this season. UConn may actually stumble in the Big East next year. Teams are going to come after Strong hard when UConn's season ends. The team is still in Nov mode searching for consistency, they have no inside game at all, miss way too many open shots. When Chen, Azzi and Paige are in the game they play deliberate ball (which is what Paige likes to play) and run when the opportunity presents itself. As soon as he inserts KK, Ash, Cheli they run around and appear to have no idea what they want to do. Admittingly I am not a KK fan, this was her best game she has played but I just do not see her as a point guard that is going to lead a team to a natty in the future. I just do not like the rotation Geno is using, players are sitting for too long in stretches which leads to the inconsistency. I.E. Chen has started many games playing well, then she sits for 10 minutes and never seems to get back in the flow of the game. Not going to be pretty against SC, who is just toying with the SEC, looking for a rematch with UCLA.

Hey Back 2 sports, great analysis on the game. Hats off to Tennessee and the coaching staff. The 5 player substitution is brilliant tactic and when that team shots better, they will go far in the tournament. As a Uconn fan, I agree with some of the precious comments. We have more players this year to rotate and sub in, but our key players are NOT doing their jobs. I wonder if they are mentally tough enough to get far into the tournament. When you watch Hildalgo, JUJU, and other players/, they deliver for their teams even in loses. Paige has done more for us (when healthy) to get Uconn far into the tournaments these past few years. But she hasn't had any support either! We have come up short in all the big games due to key players mentally freezing or not being aggressive. I am not going to blame the coaching staff on this. Sarah seems to be the only player who "Gets it!" She picks up her game and gets the shots needed, when she sees the others struggling. All other teams need to see is when you drive in on Uconn, you can score or get many of their players into foul trouble. Unfortunately, 'Paige without a championship, is a wasted college career, to me. All the greats have at least ONE. I hope the team can pull off the impossible this season.

There are many great WNCAA players who never won a title: CC, Staley, Ionescu, Plum, Delle Donne, Woodard to name just a few. Hardly "wasted" careers. Usually winning the NCAA title means having a 2nd or 3rd WNBA quality player to help. I can only think of one UConn title team that had only one top WNBA player on it and still won the title.......Taurasi her senior year in 2003-2004 "willing" that team to the title. The other UConn greats always had assistance to get their titles. Paige will be a great WNBA player regardless of how her college career ends. She will flourish when surrounded by other top players.

I’ve been a UCONN fan for over 20 yrs now and this is one of the worse UCONN teams.They have’t beaten a top non conference team all yr. Its been appalling. Our play matched our recruiting which is poor. KK Arnold and Strong were excellent however player like Bueckers and Shade kept missing wide open 3’s a nd 2’s. Our perimeter D and our rebounding was generally below par or poor. Shade never shows up in big non conference games. From the field she 3-9 and was 0-3 from 3. Chen continues to be ineffective and Geno himself was making mistakes too keeping Fudd on the court to pick up her third foul when she should have taken her off and also poorly managing his TO’s.

Calling this one of worse UConn teams in 20+ years shows you don't know much. With 15 final fours in 17 seasons, there's not much leeway for weaker teams. But a weaker team than this got to the FF last season - it was just that last year's team was grooved to play with very few players. This year's team is trying to figure how how to substitute in and out effectively. 12 available players. Last year they had 7-8 in the NCAA's. The current team is Final Four capable. And I'd be surprised if they don't make it. Shade and KK showed up big time all last season as starters. No FF last year without both of them performing good. Give Shade more time this season.....she earned it last year. So did KK. Fudd and Aubrey are still trying to get their feet back in the game and it shows. With all the substitutions the shooters don't get into a groove as easily.....too many different players jacking up 3's in the games.

He made the exact same mistake in the 2018 national semi-final, when he left Samuelson in after she picked up her fourth foul. It cost him that game too, as Notre Dame drove past her multiple times for easy layups because she couldn't play proper defense.

there was nothing shocking or stunning about UConn's loss to Tennessee. they'd both done about the same - that is, losing - against their top opposition, so it was 50-50. and nothing surprising about Paige and Azzi not showing up, they've been subpar and outplayed in the big games, namely vs. Notre Dame and USC. and beyond Paige and Azzi, as you noted Shade was nonexistent, she's a big disappointment. ditto Chen. ditto El Alfy, who started the season well, things looked promising, then she too disappeared - I mean her play, not being out of the lineup injured. big disappointment! Strong is all they have up front, that's not gonna cut it. Ziebell and Cheli: only occasional flashes of good play. UConn can look good against the weaker Conference teams, but they're own weaknesses are on display against the better non-conference teams. and yes, as you point out, Geno should eat crow for calling that timeout when Paige was about to score - you could see how frustrated she was! and for leaving Azzi in with the 2 fouls; Geno has a long history of keeping his best players in the game, sometimes for too long. so, I'm expecting South Carolina to win, EASILY. anything else would be a surprise. the only hope for UConn would be that S. Carolina has a bad game; they do have ONE bad game this season, but highly unlikely they'll have another one against UConn. let's face it: UConn's glory days are over, and they won't be coming back anytime soon.

You're right: we beat ourselves. Paige goes 5-16, Azzi goes 3-9, Ashlynn goes 2-9? You can't win that way, not against Tennessee at home. Kaitlyn was absent the whole game. Jana had impressive defense, 4 boards (3 O boards) in 11 minutes, but she's-- at best-- a work in progress offensively. KK and Aubrey played well. Morgan tried but to no avail and she didn't get many minutes. Ice didn't play at all. I am disappointed with the loss, but not too much else. As Geno said, if you look at the stat sheet you'd have thought we won. But there are certain inflection points in any game; a needful bucket, a poorly timed turnover, the defense broke down at just the wrong moment. The simple fact is Tennessee hit all theirs and we didn't hit any of ours. They were, unquestionably, the best team on the floor, and kudos to Caldwell for having them so prepared and the team for brining it off. I have to also mention their style of play is hard to prepare for, although we knew that going in. Still, if you can't prepare, you can't. If Paige and Azzi don't get their heads de-inserted, it's going to be a short season. (That can happen, of course: who doesn't know Uconn is a different team in March? Usually, anyway.) Now let's get this straight. Much of this is due to Tennessee playing well. They did. Their defense was impressive and their offense more so. Imagine beating Uconn while only hitting 25% from three! Them playing at home also helped, as did the fact they were hungry for a win. But the bottom line is we didn't play well. If we had, we'd have beaten them. And yes, you have to lay the blame on Paige and Azzi, and to a lesser extent on Ashlynn; much as that pains me to say. One more two-point bucket from each of them and we'd have won. But it isn't all doom and gloom, for all it was a bad loss. I wouldn't want to be Tennessee playing us again in the tournament, as we will then be on a neutral floor.

Uconn has the issues the Gonzaga on the Men's side often has....They load up their non-conference schedule (like basically every other top team), and then, when conference play comes, their schedule just gets sooooooo weak (which isn't their fault at all, you can't help what conference you're in), so they only see top competition like twice from January to March, when (again) they have these tough non-conference titls.

They need to go small not with Chen. Need to add Griffin and start Arnold. Stop trying to get everybody time if Shade does not hit her first three she off the rest of the game and Defense?

Good analysis. The one thing I'll push back on is that Chen's slice should go to Geno. Everything that's wrong with her this season is on Geno. She's most effective being high usage and taking people on with her dribble. She's not a Lopez-Senechal type. Chen isn't playing free like she did at Princeton, and that's on Geno.

I just think it is a bad fit and always thought that. I thought Chen should have gone to USC as would have been better fit IMO.

I THINK YOU COVERED IT RIGHT ON !!! I MIGHT ADD:THE WAY TENN ATTACKED AZZI HAD AN ENORMOUS IMPACT ON THE OUTCOME !!!(her being in foul trouble) I WILL GO OUT ON THE LIMB AND SAY THAT WHEN IT IS ALL SAID & DONE PAIGE AZZI & ASH WILL TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS !

1. Azzi always choke against pressure. LOOK two seasons ago against Ohio State. 2. Paige and Geno aren't made to gel. Paige thinks she took good. Paige ain't getting a natty. Her chance was the year when Lou Lopez Senechal was there. 3. The last minute of the second quarter and third quarter with the foul trouble.

Geno wants Paige to be someone she is not, a leader and a dog. Nika Muhl’ was a leader and a dog. She just did not have the talent. Geno, if he want to stick around, needs to build around Strong & KK, Azzi and Paige don’t have it between the ears.

I'm gonna agree with you about everything you said Except for one thing, Paige had that when she was a freshman, sophomore, and even when she came back after missing a year, she is 100% a totally different player this year than anytime in her college career. I wish I knew Why.

They lost a game. Big deal. Here's the solution: send Jenna El Alfie back to Egypt, tell Carolyn Ducharme to suit up & play or get lost. Start Paige, Azzi, Ice, Sarah, & Griffith. Give Chen, KK, Ash, Morgan, & Cadeance lots of floor time. Keep the hottest shooter from those 10 on the floor. Let Paige be Paige and stop asking her to be Diana Terausi. That scenario will get them to the Elite Eight.

You're absolutely correct. Their loss to USC early in the season should've been a clue. I say this as a loyal fan of the Uconn women's basketball team.

Like I said, UConn plays a WEAK schedule. Will not make the Final Four. Sarah Strong needs to transfer or get EXPOSED next year. Injuries have made Fudd and Bueckers HALF the players they once were.

After the first months of acclimatization, Paige's performances last year lived up to her fame, especially considering that she found herself playing as a 4 in both attack and defense. And the Paige/Aaliyah duo protected the paint much better than UConn does this year. Paige and Azzi's injuries have little to do with their performances: Azzi has always been a bit of a rebus, while Paige is trying to understand what Auriemma expects of her (like most of us, I think)

Tennessee plays in the SEC compare to UConn in the Big East. I don't think that's being a "Hater" is call being practical. I know the top 4 teams in the top 3 conferences can beat UConn, no that's not "Hating" that is factual. UConn is overrated and the hype is false. The only consolation in this game was the limited impact underachiever Aubrey Griffin played.

Uconn will be fine...it's Paige, Paige, Paige. And this is the decade of "entitlement ". Geno has been contorting as much as possible to cover Paige's flaws. Yes , uconn is a much better defensive team without having Paige on the floor. And if why isn't kk starting? AF had a horrible game, but I'm still keeping her. Paige doesn't take over a game anymore. It's that simple. Look at Paige's minutes. Geno plays musical chairs with every one but Paige. Where's Paige against good teams? Since her injuries, she doesn't have the ability to make explosive plays anymore. ElAlfy and Strong are able to control the paint. I like chen's ability to guard. They're going to be fine, I'm Sorry but it's Paige's team and she's letting them down.

They shot poorly in that game too. Only thing they excelled at was rebounds. While UConn got far more steals, more fast break points, and more assists. UConn won 3 of the 4 quarters....including the 4th. Considering this was a home game for Tennessee, they should look at their performance on why they only won by a few points. On a neutral court in the NCAA's they lose this game.

lol remember when you said paige was the best player in womens college ball?? Based on her skin color and her easily explainable high shooting percentages....Im just joking about the skin color thing i know that gets under your skin, but not really tho. You love you some white girls. Anyway this is why paige isn't the best player in womens college ball. The motor doesn't run high, the intensity, the killer, the takeover gimme the ball and get out my way isn't intact. I think it's a combo of geno's outdated overly team orriented style of play. He over coaches way too much. The 2nd thing is i think paige has had too many injuries and it's taken some of her spirit away. Geno recruiting is also suffering lately as well.
