I have a friend in the roofing business here in Texas. Here is some advice. If you know of a reputable roofer, try to have them on site when the insurance company estimator comes out. Insurance will try for the cheapest fix but a good roofer can often convince them all the work that actually needs to be done. My friend has been able to get a total roof replacement on many occasions. Good luck.

When I was just going into HS, in 1968, there was a tornado that hit a small town south of us. I spent my time picking a wire and wood corn crib out of a oat field, this was in June. One of the guys found a paperboard playing card driver half into a plaster lathe wall in an upstairs bedroom. Totally believe your reports, glad you and yours are alright!

Sorry about the damage! It might have been a small twister that came through. How did the chickens make out, any causalities? About 25 years ago we had a small waterspout come off the lake and take out 2 big pine trees one of which took out my neighbors deck during a thunder storm.

I do feel for you, thankfully you and your family members are safe. When I was about 12 a hurricane hit the corner of my grandfather's 150' barn causing damage to over a 1/3 of the roof and walls. On the bright side, we had an old fashioned barn takedown and build. The entire church showed up with strong backs and all kinds of food. Once again, glad you are safe and hopefully those around you, both family and friends.

Glad no one was hurt. It's been fairly calm this year compared to others, but we still have had a lot of rain. Bad part is we still have our stormy spring weather ahead of us! A few years ago here in AR we had papers and mail in our yards from people over 50+ miles away when a twister came through. I like the look of Bradford Pears in the spring but man, they are notorious for splitting and breaking apart.

Wow Nathan, sorry to hear about all the damage! Glad you and your family are ok. We have had some fairly violent storms here in the UK too. My garden fence panels are in the farmers field, my shed roof caved in with the amount of water on it after the asphalt shingle got ripped off. Just trying to get it sorted now. Take care dear friend.Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧👍

As you said, it seems like the storms we do get have increased in severity. That got me to cutting down a few trees around my house. We lost power for two days during our last snowstorm. The wood stove and gas range sure came in handy.

I am genuinely sorry you received so much damage, and for the wind to blow an entire roof 80 yards is incredible! It seems that we have been seeing higher winds in the last few years than ever. My property got hit last summer, destroying some of my buildings and most of my big trees, including my favorite yard maple. I hope your dad can help you rebuild your chicken coop. Great oak video, as always

I am retired, addicted to KZbin, and I also have issues with hearing, so I use headphones everyday while watching videos. Your audio is awesome as is your video quality. Good content. Your videos aren't too long, and they aren't too short! So many KZbinrs think we need 30-45 minutes or even one hour of content and, quite honestly, I pass those up every day because of my short attention span. Keep on doing what you are doing and thank you!

During storm "Killian" a winghose flattened a strech of wood in our direct neighborhood about 500meters wide and 4 kilometers long. Only very few trees where left standing. At the very end it passed over an 8 stories building ripped the complete roof of an elevator house and smashed it about 600 yards away into the roof of a families house. Thanks good the kids had left their room an hour ago and slept with their parents. Good luck!

Whew!! I know how that feels. Had 2 go over our house in Georgia. Of the 5 commercial chickens across the street, 1.5 were left. The awnings over the front and back porches were blown off and the 28cuft freezer on our back porch that was full got blown over as well. My wife said the rain was blowing up through the seal between the windows. Glad you all are alright!!

Nathan, I hope there was no loss of life in the chicken house or amongst your tribe of cats. I would like to offer you some advice. As a retired engineer with quite a lot of structural experience during my 57 years of working, there is one stand out element which is usually a surprise to most people without engineering training. The necessity of a good foundation seems to be common knowledge. Of course the foundation is what keeps the building up. However, the need to keep the building down seems to be not quite so obvious. Especially in relatively light structures, it is very important to ensure that the structure is securely tied down. Strong winds not only blow things sideways, they can create vertical pressure, both downward and upward. When you rebuild the chicken house, ensure that it is well tied down to the foundation.

I hope things work out for you with your insurance company. Prayers headed your way. During one storm that took the tops out of 66 trees on our property in Alabama, a neighbor pointed to the woods behind the house and said, "There lies your trampoline, upside down." I told him, "We don't have a trampoline." He replied, "You do now!"

That looks like tornado damage, alright. We lost our barn back in 99, and because there were no "confirmed" touchdowns, insurance refused to pay a penny. By the by, sound quality is pretty good, Nathan. Sounds about like you have it dialed in. Oh, something I've been thinking about... My grandfather was a Sawyer up here in northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania from the 1930s to the mid 80s, and some of his favorite workers were from your neck of the woods. Herman Hutchison, Sheridan Severt and his son John (all gone now, sadly.) were from Johnson County and sounded almost exactly like you. Must be something about the land of east Tennessee that makes good sawyers...

Nathan, Sorry about the roof of your chicken house. Did you use "hurricane clips" to tie the rafters/trusses to the studs? When I built my wood shop in '05 I had the inspector out for the final inspection, and he told me I needed to add them to meet local codes, which I did. Relatively cheap, easy to install, and effective!

this is why in south florida houses are now required to have hurricane clips on each side of each rafter tying it down to the walls - what they found out was that the wind would just lift whole roof of the house and it would go flying - kinda like the chicken coup ;-) - glad you are ok and things were relatively minor damage.
