Harsh truth time: Venables has shown nothing to prove he's an improvement over Riley and if he weren't a former OU coach, Sooner fans would see that by now. Riley's defenses were never as bad as OU's offense is now, and the only time it was close was when he was stuck with Mike Stoops by Bob. Venables is wasting this defense because he was too blind to see that "JFA" can't read a college defense, and no amount of catchy nicknames by OU fans will change that. Now you're in year 3 having to stake all your hope on a true freshman 3* QB to salvage the season and make a bowl game. Yikes. And shoutout to all the delusional Sooners who kept insisting Arnold was the best QB in his class (despite no one ranking him higher than 3rd) because he won a camp that Arch and Nico skipped anyways. Bet you're all happy Venables pushed Gabriel out for... that. Venables is a great coordinator, mediocre head coach. That's become painfully obvious.

CJH was super conservative calling playd but i think he was trying tobget out of there without another injury and really did not want to embarrass his alma mater. What? Nico didn’t even play bad. He was handicapped by the play calling because of our tackle not being able to protect him. A freshman on the road, his 1st ever conference game, threw 4 or 5 absolute dimes, 1 was dropped by WR, and the crowd was never ever a factor. That poise is elite….and so is he. They move the goalposts every time Tennesse wins a game but OSU can play scrubs all season and it's fine, Bama beats a bad Wisconsin team and they're great, Michigan barely beats a USC team that can't stop a nosebleed and its considered a tough gritty win. Same thing happened in 2022.

@@tabc123 I’m saying Michigan doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. They’ve been stinking it up for the better part of two decades outside last season. But, “tradition.” UT has had a bad run for the better part of the 21st century themselves until Heupel came along. But UT never got the benefit. Even when they had Payton and all the way through their National Championship run. If the top two had not been decided by a computer that year the coaches and AP would have found a way to knock UT out of it.

Containing the OU offense under Jackson Arnold was no accomplishment, despite the media hype. The real contest was on the other side of the ball. While some media are saying JH pulled up, coaches and film guys know better. He had to protect his QB, based on the assumption that his offense could easily coral Jackson Arnold and company. It was a sound call by JH, based on the facts that existed then and there. But then, a true freshman named Hawkins came in, used the 3d a quarter to find his his comfort, then drove the ball against the Vol defense- twice-in the 4th quarter. The story about this game being about the Vol defense is only for non-football people. The rest of the SEC defensive coordinators just saw how OU held the number one offense to 150 yards on the ground and forced them out of their offense. Good game.

TN fan here, I'm going to take the Coach Nick Saban approach. TN was fortunate to come away with the win. A lot of mental errors, lack of discipline in the way of penalties which is a coaching failure, and the inability to contain a scrambling QB while enforcing secondary coverage. The coaching staff needs to implement a plan of action to address these issues that against better opponents could have very likely cost TN the game. Thankfully TN has a bye week, because they have some work to do if they intend to be competitive this season in the SEC. In the words of my older brother, "figure it out". Go Vols!

@@brandeestinnett6523 TN fan here, TN has discipline problem. I witnessed it during Hendon Hookers day. He had a scramble which fell short of a touchdown and elbowed the defender after the play. The personal foul wasn't called. Whether or not J Hyp knew of or addressed the incident with Hooker post-game I'll never know. That being said, shit ass unsportsmanlike conduct has no place in college football. I'd like to add that hooker was a hell of a QB while he played for TN.
