Heupel knew toward end of 1qtr that the OU off would be ineffective vs the TN def. Also TN was dealing with injuries at both OT positions, playing a 2nd and 3rd string player at both ends. Having that vs the OU front 7 could be a recipe for disaster (hence the two strip sacks). Once you hit the two score lead and with the tn def shutting down OU off, there was no need to put your freshman qb in any compromising situations. Just my $.02

Thought you could be a Brees type in pros if given the chance…it’s cool seeing you pop up in my feed yrs later for something unrelated haha. Nico to me looks special. Insane arm at that age. Legit 6’6, has downfield accuracy, can throw on the run. I’ve learned not to get too ahead of myself because things can change in a heartbeat. I played QB myself and so much of it is mental. This game shows how much Heupel has evolved as a head coach. It's completely against his nature as a play caller to be so conservative, but he slowed the offense down and shortened the game by running the ball. The one area that takes longest to develop, and where we have the least depth is on OL. With both our starting tackles out there is a big drop-off so I think that played into Nico feeling he had to make quick decisions, and it was definitely the reason UT played very conservatively on offense. We felt like the only way OK could win once we were up was if we turned the ball over, and after some blown blocks we changed up our approach.

Love the detailed breakdowns and understand this is mostly analysis of the passing game, but have a look - whenever Nico hands the ball off, his eyes follow the runner. As a Tennessee fan I watch a lot of your videos, particularly the Nico ones. The play at the 10:00 mark where he doesn’t even look at the other side of the field and is something I’ve noticed he’s done multiple times, and is something that is a little bit concerning. Do you think that’s something that eventually improves with experience or are they just trying to maybe over simplify things for him and give him easier reads? I think on that particular play he was just hurrying too much to get the snap off and didn’t get a good presnap read on the defense that’s an easy read and pass to make for him. I just don’t see them beating Bama or Georgia with him missing those kind of plays, and it’ll be even tougher to score against those teams

I don't think OU giving WRs free release was disrespecting Tenn. OU's backfield is the strongest it's been in ages and was just underrated going into the season- they trust their guys. They had a freshman at corner that played really well. The guy that snapped his ankle, #15 -their hybrid Backer/ Nickel/ Safety (Cheetah position) is a gifted player. He was OU's second best player on defense after Stutsman and a manifestation of Brent Venable's vision on the field. Overall Tenn played great and earned a solid win. Shame that the offense was abysmal
@MrChucklepuff3 ай бұрын
Probably because the sooner field was filled with divots. The wet field allowed Oklahoma not to respect the WRs speed. We were sliding all over the place. It’s okay though because it made Vols defense look even better 😊

the field looked like the 1970's before groundskeeping had come a long way, maybe that was by design by the home team, can't blame em ... Question: I have noticed Vol QBs under Heupel stand fully straight, no knee bend, no ability to react quickly to a bad snap ... is this by design? or are they just copying what they watched from the QB that they played under the year before (Milton>Hooker>Milton>Nico)?

They only had 3 explosive plays that counted (one got called back for holding), and they had less than 3 yards per carry alone with 2 fumbles, 3 sacks and 9 negative plays. This film shows OU strapped mostly everything other than a handful of busts. Not to take anything away from TN, just pointing this out bc there has been credit taken away from OUs defense due to their offenses horrific performance

I think not asking Nico to do a lot, which I see more as asking him to do just enough, comes from many different places. 1) 1st SEC road start for Nico. Just enough makes sense. 2) Terrible field. Do enough to win. Doing more could get you hurt. 3) You know Oklahoma isn't the best you're going to face (Arkansas and Florida may see conservative games too), so you don't put everything you have on film for Alabama and Georgia to prepare for. 4) Oklahoma can't score if you don't give them the ball. Do enough, then run the clock. If anyone thinks Tennesse didn't back off in a big way, I have a challenge for you. Find the last time Tennessee lead time of possession by over 10 minutes. Hint: It's pre-pandemic.

Two things ...we found out that Heupel protected Nico while losing two offensive linemen. Oklahoma was really good on defense. Safety's played close the entire game almost like linebackers and dared Tennessee to run. They also wanted and did for the most part take the middle of the field off the plate for Nico. He burned them twice but for the most part over the middle wasnt an option. You could tell after Tennessee got the lead they barely passed the ball. Huepel was all about the clock and protection. He pretty much did the same thing against Florida in 2022 which almost got them beat. I think Tennessee left 2 scores on the field and Oklahoma probably left a score on the field.
