A detailed explanation of the inner workings of the tennis ball launcher. I shot this at the request of an engineering student at the University of Oklahoma.

Dean very nice work. For those who have not noticed but at @12:20 where he talked about normally open and normally closed switches, the configuration is a Logical OR gate. With both switches are open, the motor is off. If the launch ready switch NO is closed, then the motor is on. If the park ready switch NC is closed, then the motor is on. The launch and park switch are connected in parallel. This is the current flow of a logical OR gate in state circuitry.

Thanks very much Dean, I am a Entomologist who love tennis, was searching for a ball machine, so I found this very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Dean, thank you so much for this detailed explanation video. I know that you did it for some engineering students, but it is super useful for me as well. I am hoping to apply this design to a volleyball setting machine.

i built something very similar. i place a delay relay in the circuit to give the puppy time to get down range i wired a flashing led to the nopen position on the timer relay switch which would flash once the ball triggered from the microswitch, I also added a piezo buzer to the motor circuit which really hypes him up as it turns and fired. I used a wiper motor and just used the thread on the motor to the axle which worked a treat. Your vid inspired me thanks for sharing.

no need for the park switch as the motor stops as the ball leaves the trigger swith. i run the arm on thrust torrington bearings i also made a top and bottom guide to keep the arm perfectly aligned. i will email you pics tomorrow.

This is what I like, good thinking and keeping it simple, without using an arduino ;-)

This is the best explanation of the use of microswitches in a circuit that I have EVER seen - and I was an IBM tech for 23 years. ATMs are chock full of these switches and circuits. Wise of the University of Oklahoma engineering student to ask you. :-) If someone builds this with a weaker motor, they could try using a shorter or weaker spring that puts less torque on the motor - provided it is still strong enough to launch the ball. Combining your hands-on knowledge of building things with your commenters knowledge of Logical And / Logical Or gates would provide valuable knowledge to many more people. It makes me realize I could have used an electrical engineering class early on instead of figuring things out using common sense. Have you considered teaching common appliance repairs using video? For example, the cover switch on washing machines commonly goes out, and knowing how to bypass that switch (in homes where adults with common sense are smart enough not to stick their arms into moving mechanisms) is an easy workaround to buying a new washer or having a repair person rush out.

TLAR is the way to go. I don't mind inventing the wheel over and over again, as long as it's MY wheel. Never had a name for it, so I'm happy to adopt your term. As a sign of my gratitude, allow me to share with you another methodological acronym. The IPUGA method. Ignore Problem Until Goes Away. May not sound like much of a method, but I keep being amazed at how often it is actually applicable. I hope it will prove useful to you in the future!

The gate on your ball launcher is an OR gate. OR gate - If either A or B is triggered, current flows

Thank you so much for such a detailed explanation of how this machine works. I was wondering what spring you used in this design? Thanks

hello, may I know what kind of motor suitable to pull more bigger spring?

hey dean how about the wiring schematic on the wiper motor?????
@Cruiser05213 жыл бұрын
Correction, if either A, B or both are triggered.

Uh... Because that's not what this video is about. It's pretty clear that it's a tennis ball launcher deconstruction video.

Sry you did not explain what you need to build this i just need schematics
