That’s still a bullshit attitude. This happens to every single player at some point, many times in fact. You don’t just retire, recollect yourself and get your head back in the game. That’s what your coaches always tell you. People paid money to see you. And it was the first set, horrible decisions by the umpire but also a horrible decision by Zhang to just call it quits.

When Putintseva says another person got cheated, that tells you a lot. This is just another reason why tennis needs to have some form of electronic line calling. I cant understand how a sport like soccer has it for balls travelling at maybe 30 mph and needs to be relied on maybe once or twice a match, yet in tennis where literally every shot is ~ twice as fast, it's not used across the board. Madness.

The Zhang v Toth match is truly one of the worst bits of umpiring and opponent behaviour ever seen in tennis. Zero sportsmanship and egregious umpiring. I’m more forgiving of the crowd because they’re reacting to what they see and we see things more assuredly with our numerous replays but the crowd doesn’t come across very well in this either
@rafarequeni822
@rafarequeni822 Жыл бұрын
"We see things more assuredly with our numerous replays". I'll fix that for you. "We are so arrogantly sure that the blurry 4x4 pixels on a low-resolution screen seems to be out that we think the umpire who had her face 15 inches away from the actual mark is wrong". Most likely scenario is the other way, though. If you know just a little bit of photography you know how deceptive camera angles may distort perception.

@@kaikh4845Too aggressive on my part, true, I apologize for that. What I meant is that here on youtube (or Facebook, Instagram, whatever social media) people are always so sure they are right and the actual experts on the subject are wrong, no matter if the subject is judging tennis ball marks, vaccination efficiency or climate change. The judge may have commited a mistake. Hardly the same time that happens. It's also very probable that it's just the camera angle which makes the ball look in when it was out, and it's a massive leap of faith that we're getting it right and she was wrong. You can't have that much faith in cameras - not even in Hawkeye; it does actually fail sometimes.
@kaikh4845
@kaikh4845 Жыл бұрын
@@rafarequeni822 I understand where you’re coming from completely and I appreciate the apology. (Just for the record 😅 vaccines work and climate change is real. Just in case you thought I was crazy haha). Yes, I definitely concede the possibility of being wrong. I can’t ever know for sure but it’s the actions by the opposing player which also point towards the ball being in. Her refusal to answer Zhang’s inquiries as well as wiping the mark away. I’ve watched a lot of tennis matches over the decades and in so many instances, players are willing to cooperate with their opponents and even concede points due to umpire error if they know that their opponent should have won a point. Zhang is also a player known for being quite kind and fair and it’s unlikely that she would have been so adamant about the matter if it wasn’t an incredibly questionable decision by the umpire. Putting all of these together with what we see, and it seems more than likely that the ball was in.

I feel for Zhang on that crosscourt forehand, to me it looks clearly in, there is no gap between the mark and the line. I can understand her frustration, however as a professional she really should have just moved on and continued. It would have been nice if her opponent had the sportsmanship to concede it was in and replay the point, I've seen players like Federer and Nadal do that many times.

I get Zhang was upset with the call.. But the next point was played as well.. Whether Toth rubs off the mark or not doesn't matter at all.. Not like they will replay from that point again once she crosses the court and sees its in..

What is with all these Zhang fanboys? Zhang is legit always complaining and she's often wrong. Zhang thought the shot was out at 7:03 but she didn't stop, she continued playing. So why is she again complaining like always? Then the next point, the umpire is wrong. It's definitely touching the line for me but the umpire checked, said it was out and never came back to check again that's the umpires fault but also the way Zhang complains is very annoying and so I'm sure there's some bias there for the umpire not checking more because the way you act matters. And then Zhang plays the victim again because Toth removes a mark on a point that was over already. They played a whole new point and so Toth takes away the mark like every clay player does. Nadal and Djoko always remove the marks when the point is over because that's what you're supposed to do because you don't want the same spot to be hit and the umpire not being able to know which mark is which. But Toth got so much hate all because Zhang is a professional victim.

That Zhang episode must be biggest robbery in tennis history. Umpire did that clearly by purpose assuming she is not completely blind. Feel so sad for how the Chinese felt there. Should life ban umpire and big penalization for that no-brain opponent who celebrates

Toth didn't even win her first main draw SET, and she picked up 70 spots in the rankings. If I were her coach, there would be a 20-minute lecture on respecting your opponent. Hopefully we never hear from her again.

I'm surprised how much support Zhang is getting here in the comments. Yes, it was a bad call, but these happen all the time. She needed to get over it, rise above, and defeat her opponent. Pretty sure she's the more skilled player anyway. But the crowd was reacting to Zhang holding up the match, and honestly it went on so long, it got annoying. At some point they have to realize they will not get the resolution they want, and they need to keep playing.

Zhang seems like a nice girl but people defending her like crazy is a bit ridiculous. She obviously isn't in a good place mentally and for her to hold up the game that much is inappropriate to say the least. And for her to start shouting at Toth for wiping off the ball mark (which is something all players do, and something she was entitled to do because the point was over) was unacceptable as well.
@cc4454

The ball was clearly on the line even someone that doesn't know tennis rules could see that. And to have the audacity to celebrate after your opponent retires from suffering a panic attack? That's a whole new level of low right there
@user-gu1un7pb7k
@user-gu1un7pb7k Жыл бұрын
@@cc4454 Yes the ball was clearly on the line, the umpire is known to be incompetent, but bad calls happen and very rarely do players cause this much of a scene because of it. Zhang held up the game for ages. I don't really blame Toth for celebrating infront of Zhang after Zhang shouted at her for merely wiping off the ball mark - something that is so custom and rudimentary in a clay court match. What exactly did Zhang intend to do with a ball mark from 2 points ago? It was such a ridiculous charade. She was clearly not in the right mental state to be on court, but the people hysterically attacking Toth and defending Zhang (including other pro players) are idiots.

@@user-gu1un7pb7k I agree. It's not Toth who's in the wrong here; it's Zhang. Bad call or not, her reaction was very poor, in the extreme, and to prolong the argument for so long was absurd and totally disrespectful to the opponent and the crowd. She should have received a time violation for that. And then to quit after that game was plain daft. Zhang is at fault yet almost everybody including several WTA players have jumped to her side and seemingly have isolated poor Toth over all this. It's almost feels like bullying of the worst kind. I feel terrible for young Toth and really hope she can recover from this episode.
