Thanks Jeff, didn't realize I was pausing at the top of my service motion. As a pitcher in baseball the serve always came easy for me but I started playing serious again about a year ago and couldn't understand why I couldn't get the speed and power I use to. Tried a continuous motion, like pitching and that pause was the reason. The pause was so subtle that I don't know if I would have figured it out by myself. You are a very talented coach. Your so easy to understand. You seem like a great human being too. Thanks a lot.

Thanks Jeff. I've started recording myself on serves, just cause it didn't feel as smooth as my other shots, and I wanted to improve. I coudln't really pin point what was off until I saw this video and realized how quickly I was getting to the trophy position and just... hanging there. Off rythm.. Going a bit further I think we focus too much on holding a trophy position while in reality it should be just a frame... a photo, somewhere you pass by but not a place you want to get to? It shouold be there if you pause the video at the right time but you shouldn't really see it during a fluid motion. Just a thought.

Great stuff, Jeff. I am just starting out, and I think this will keep me out of the weeds. But how do you transition from the 3/4 to the full motion? Do you begin the 1-2 or Slow-Go from the 3/4, or save that until you have moved into the full motion? Thanks!

I hope this will help with my nerves when I serve in doubles matches. Because the serve gives me so much time to think compared to other shots, I tend to tense up and want to go faster to avoid thinking. Even though intellectually I understand that beginning slowly and accelerating is what's best for the serve. I seem to prefer playing tennis in a blur, haha.

@@TennisEvolution thanks for the reply! I haven't checked to see if you already have videos on these yet because I just found your page, so forgive me if this is a repeat. But I would like to see videos on drop volleys and two handed backhands. I have a more extreme grip like Rafa's for my 2HBH (because I'm short it helps with high balls, but I feel like getting my timing correct is tough on balls with pace) and most video instructions are on the more standard backhand grip like Novak's. And if you have any tips for staying cool and loose while serving, that would be great, too.

Hi Jeff, me again! I have been practicing my toss and find that a medium high toss works best for me (and watching Sharapova waiting for Godot in the US Open has shown me the hazards of aeronautic tossing). Now my coach wants to shift me from "hands together" motion to "toss first", and it is making my head explode. I always try to do what is recommended, so I need some guidance. I know I cannot just leave my hitting arm down by my side without feeling lopsided. I notice you move both hands at the beginning, but your hitting arm goes into a low, bent elbow position as the toss reaches its height. So would you say that is the "slow" part of the "slow-go" method? Because it almost seems like a pause at the bottom. Would that translate to a "lag and rip", so that the actual hitting motion is continuous? Am I speaking English?

O.K., Jeff, let's take another similar example using the word "idea"... Idea is a Platonic word and sequence of W.M.I. (Word -Meaning- Idea). The continuing problem is also the wrong pronunciation even in Oxford Lexicons (Dictionaries). They pronounce it "aidia", which means "disgusting" in Hellenic Language but with different orthography (spelling), and not edea... without using the consonant of Rhythm, as in words (the and this) and also they use the I instead of e (in the words ear, eager and eat)... I know, Jeff, that is an old and very complicated problem, but my intention is to help globally for its solution! I wrote these comments, because i saw and heard your expressed desire to learn the right pronunciation of the names of the players participated in Roland Garros 2018 ... My dream is to change the pronunciation of some Important Hellenic Words, they entered in English Language and therefore in our International Communication System. John the Hellin (instead of Greek) from Hellas (instead of Greece)... P.S. Thanks again for your instant reaction (i.e. "return") to my first "serve"! Idem
