Amazing video! I can't explain how excited I am when I know the key to the topspin serve is likely placing arm behind the body after the swing.

Wow, you can really FEEL just how much you're trying to push your message through (our thick heads?) to us, about getting better, about understanding and then doing, in small, progressive steps, until it becomes real. It's an impressive and inspiring message, thank you. I think I'll go out and get better. No, I *_KNOW_* I'll go out and get better! P.S. I'm from the Denver area (Littleton), but I live in Montreal now. Yeah I know, WHAAAT?!! Married a French Canadian, and you can't move 'em. I like it alright here (except for the 6-month winter), but I do miss home. Will be back to visit once The Virus is finished rag dolling us. As for yourself sir, keep fighting the good fight, and thanks again for the inspiration. Your Colorado Compatriot - Jim Davis, now of Montreal

I started out with a topspin serve and I had a circular racquet trajectory identical to yours; although it was difficult to return, it lacked power and pace of a flat serve or slice. So I abandoned it and focused on flat and slice serve mechanics. I’ll throw it in every now and then to surprise my opponents. The highest height I achieved on this serve was 10 feet and extreme wide to the left. It’s a beautiful serve cause it clears the net 10 feet or more and curves as it goes over.

Hey Jeff are you doing a kick serve that bounces in the opposite direction of a slice? I use that as a 2nd to the AD side sometimes. But what about a topspin that you hit with the follow thru like a slice that you get some side spin but more pace cause you don't carve the ball as extreme and hit more on top? Kinda like a hybrid. I like it cause you can get higher bounce and more power and you can crack it for a 1st and 2nd.

Love the video! Especially love that youre one of the few lefty instructors on youtube. Question though. Why do so many pros finish their serve follow through on the opposite side though?
@gregoryphillips3969
@gregoryphillips3969 4 жыл бұрын
Jeff, this is so right on the button. So many including well known coaches including one who got to the quarterfinals of the US Open in the early 80's teaches the follow through going around the stomach. The kick serve you're teaching is more effective and penetrating. Please answer this question. Is the follow through for the flat serve the same as for the kick serve. I tried a few flat serves following through behind the body and it felt pretty good. Please give me your feedback thanks.

i love how many videos are people posting about serve, how to swing like federer, how to position your elbow, body , how to toss the ball, how to finish the move. but not a single video is describing why are pros doing that way or even better, how does that affect the ball, what's the main reason of making topspin sidespin serve. everything in this video ,and all others about serving is just a byproduct of trying to produce topsin on the serve. that's what people dont realize who are trying to copy the right moves but they still struggle because they dont know the exact reason of doing that.

Here is some top-spin advice based on physics that you will never hear from a tennis instructor (told to me by Prof Howard Brody the Father of the Science of Tennis): spin the ball out of your hand with a snap of the fingers and then hit the serve. I call it Snap & Slap. The Magnus Force (an aerodynamic effect concerning a pressure differential) will take over and the ball will tumble into the service box for a good serve. Interestingly, the harder you hit the ball the greater the effect. It's physics, but then most tennis folks don't want to take the time to learn. So give it a try anyway. BTW: As Professor Tennis, I also use the technique for a back-spin slice serve as you can spin the ball even easier out of your hand with a back-spin.

Jeff didn't make it explicitly clear but this is intended to be a drill to develop feel for topspin on the serve. It is one step in reprogramming your serve. This is not intended to be practiced with a full-speed swing. On a full swing, you will finish across your body.

I have been trying the Jeff's way of topspin for a long time, but my topspin is sometimes 1 or 2 feet out, so my workaround is step 1 foot away from baseline.

@@tennisparisbrothers8001 good tip. I will try it. I always thought I should swing as hard as I can for topspin. Maybe, like Jeff said, I need to reduce the forward swing motion, increase more sideway swing. I just subscribed your channel. Good stuff.

@@tennisparisbrothers8001 I have been working really hard to not worry about power, but instead correct mechanics to cut down on serving it out and double faulting. I have actually been finding through small adjustments and refinements that I’m doing exactly what was explained in this video, so now I will be even more intentional about it. Thanks for these tips!

Hey Ilhan. What do you mean by the blue or green? For topspin serve, you want to toss the ball slightly above your head to create that circular swing path.

@@TennisEvolution Jeff, I was making reference to the court colors on the video where I saw your killer kick...so simply on your kick serve at contact is the ball inside the court (towards the net), or on the base line, or behind the baseline toward the fence....thank you for your response, enjoy your videos and teachings...Best
