I am one of that 1%. I hate his tantrums and raging style on court. It is bordering on arrogance (I can't make mistakes). I also think there is a huge double standard, fans hate on Tsitsipas, Shelton, Rune but adore Rublev. To me Rublev seems like someone who could be triggered at home for some minor thing and would commit a crime of passion. It is my opinion based on his behaviour and style/attitude on tennis court.
@javihernandez27558 ай бұрын
@@Stu49583 I thing the biggest differenciator is that Rublev never comes as arrogant, and arrogance is one of the most divisive traits for most fans. Rublev always apologizes for his tantrums and is respecful when he's sound, while other players often "own them" and make it part of their public persona. As the video says, Rublev's tantrums are always out of frustration with himself, never with the opponent. All I said doesn't justify or diminish his childlike behavior and mental shortcomings, but there's a reason most fans root for him and want him to get better. Rune is starting to improve a little bit in that regard and focus on his tennis, and Tsitsipas seems to be sort of maturing now, but Shelton has this type of personality when he acts like part of the big 3 without the results to back him up

Rublev to me, is the product of Tiger Parents/unreasonable expectations. As a former college player who grew up playing with high-level junior players that could've gone pro I've seen this playout. Had a teammate in high school who actually attended one of those IMG/Evert/Nadal-type tennis boarding school academies and they came back home after a short struggle with mental health. It's a bittersweet realization to have that maybe your dream (being a pro tennis player) is someone else's burden or nightmare...

I think that a penalty during a match for self harm (including verbal harm) would make matters worse. However, some kind of post-tournament penalty along the lines of required counselling could be helpful, depending on what the ATP could come up with. Watching Andrey melt down for me is far, far worse than the classic tantrums of McEnroe or Kyrgios, or the constant umpire abuse that a lot of players exhibit. The latter is unpleasant, but I don't worry for the player (I just don't like them). With Rublev as many have said, I always love him, but fear for his health.
@sportslover23568 ай бұрын
Kyrgios had exactly the same background as Rublev - amazing junior results, huge expectations, prodigious pressure, terrible perfectionism and anger at himself for even losing a single point that he should have won. Depression and injury. The media destroyed him as they are not destroying Rublev. Kyrgios is also known as one of the kindest and gentlest people around off court. The ATP used him over and over until he was 26 because he wouldn't say no and they exhausted him.

Consiidering the Grand Slam tournaments all threatened Osaka with disqualification for trying to avoid press conferences to avoid anxiety you get a pretty good idea of how much tennis cares about its players. Even after Serena's meltdown against Osaka in her first US Open win you saw her talking to reporters shortly afterwards. Players are timed for their bathroom breaks during 5 hour matches in 36 degree heat. The money in tennis can be great but players live inside a moving fishbowl along with their failures. Most of these players look at any loss as a failure and out of 32 players only 1 gets to raise the trophy.

I'm a psychologist and your insights were pretty good. That exact moment when he's "undercover" struck me aswell. It seems all around he's struggling to be somebody who is equally loveable by both himself as others. On court he sets an immense bar (but who doesn't; they're professionals). The fact is that his behavior gets him in trouble sometimes. From my point of view he could benefit from changing his core beliefs about himself/others (cognitive therapy). Identify those and at least he knows what he's dealing with: the ghosts of his past. He is already succesfull in tennis, but somehow I get the feeling he'd rather has a succesfull character.

The fact that the tennis commentators and fans are able to talk freely and empathise and look for solutions for Rublev now shows just how far you have all come in the last ten years since Kyrgios showed exactly the same issues under stress. He has been a ground breaker in highlighting what lies behind Rublev's behaviour. For himself, Instead of showing concern and empathy he was fined, suspended and banned for months, for much less. Banned for three months after arguing with an umpire at Shanghai. Fined $110,000 for smashing racquets and calling Fergus a 't...' when given a time violation. Taken to the cleaners for underarm serves. Called a clown for tweeners. Kyrgios is obviously very concerned that the same does not happen to Rublev and has offered to fly from anywhere in the world to talk to him. The ATP must not do to Rublev and Rune what it did to Kyrgios and Tomic. You have never shown any care for him in your videos. Yet every reason behind Rublev's issues is present in Kyrgios's life. Except colour. And being Australian.

Rublev CANNOT beat someone like Alcaraz, Sinner or Ruud on clay right now. He really needs a Dimitrov, Khachanov or Struff to slay the favorites for him in order to have any chance to win the tournament. He overstresses thinking he could win by just hitting harder against those types of players. That's why guys like Ruud are so chill in defeat, they know their limitations, and just go home and work harder on them. Andrey doesn't do that, he really thinks playing the same way ALWAYS will suffice to win championships and that his mental breakdowns are the ONLY thing holding him back. It is a limitation, yes, but his tennis is his biggest limitation, the moment he recognizes that he will be more at ease with himself.

Rublev is a passionate and superb player who gives 100 percent to his game. His lack of self-restraint does get in the way of his performance but he is seldom if ever disrespectful to his opponents or the audience. He’s often a crowd favourite. His disqualification at Dubai was incredibly unfair considering the passes other players have received for far worse offences. One only has to go back to the 2021 Vienna Open semifinal between Sinner and Tiafoe. I have never in all my years watching the sport witnessed such disrespectful and appalling behaviour. Tiafoe should have been thrown out of the tournament immediately. Yet the clucks at ATP could only cheer him on, quacking and honking in delight like a cadre of manic fowl. The problem with ATP is that they either have double standards or no standards at all.

The clip was selected so that you would have this negative reaction. this video maker has an armful of clips which use Kyrgios to make a point but neglect to put in the rest of the extract which includes his enormous concern for Rublev and his offer to do anything to help so that he doesn't end up self-harming and self-hating like he did as a result of media and fan scrutiny.

Rublev has definitely had moments of self destruction in those 0-10 QF. The Tiafoe match he was coming apart at the seems and was so volatile I just viewed that as a huge missed opportunity. He also had a QF vs Novak in AO where he absolutely no belief but played a solid QF vs Novak in Wimbledon the same year. I definitely think after a slight regression in consistency in 2024 this is a good opportunity to tweak the team or at least accommodate a mental coach who can keep him more stable on court.

3:34 is this just me or there's an error in the ranking of % 2nd serve point won? it's not properly classified. Also according to this table statistics, I don't know if the 52 week average table is correct either...

the shadow his childhood casted on him needs time to be cured, and i can't wait to see Andrey finally manages to feel love for himself and be gentle to himself no matter things went as planed or not.

Law of attraction I hope you mentioned the fact that he’s never gotten into a grand slam semifinal. That’s like a mental hurdle that he has an overcome and that’s a big one because all his other buddies all his other Russian buddies having he was the leader of the pack for a while.

Rublev needs to start being more versatile in his way of playing, I think he overrates his own tennis and that's why he pressures himself so much. Being a perennial Top 10 is as high as he can get with his tennis, he should actually be happy with what he has achieved already. If he really wants to step up, his mind is not his only limitation, but also his repetitive, uncreative and predictable tennis. He is not Djokovic or Sinner to adhere to one playing style and expect to win all the time, those guys have way more tools than Andrey and they are way more tactical in their approach, unlike Andrey who's strategy is "if you are down a break, just hit harder until you win". He doesn't change the pace, angles nor does he manage the flow of the match in an efficient way. He always starts hitting on all cylinders and the only intensity he manages is "always up" until he starts gassing out or making more errors and making things easier for his opponent.

I can see you don’t watch much rublev but just follow stats. For him it all comes down to confidence - in practice his net play is actually really good even compared to top opponents. The returns you were comparing were during his slump. Okay he’s not gonna be Djokovic but you’re doing what you’re saying you’re not - you’re limiting him to “few tools”. I think he needs a coaching change to expand that and instil that confidence outside of practice and I think ivanisevic would be the right guy. He knows how to work with temperamental top players and convert their game to their highest degree - maybe you’ve heard of Novak Djokovic. Bc of his family the Spanish team he built is his real family but it would be wise to bring an actual ex top player and coach into the team.
