For racquets, 19 x 16 string pattern will help with spin. For strings, square bites the ball, and also helps the strings glide over each other. This helps a newly strung racquet, and also helps on subsequent uses because the strings glide over each other flat, and therefore do not notch the same way other strings do; notches inhibit movement. That is why Solinco Hyper-G is so popular, though I prefer the stiffer Weiss Ultra Cannon, which is better for spin. That helps the ball maintain longer contact with the ball to impart spin. There's some debate and disagreement about tension. Looser string causes more string movement (good for spin), but higher tension maintain longer contact (good for spin), and may depend on how fast your stroke is. I think the faster the stroke, higher the tension is better for spin.

TW university did a very thorough experiments and found at most 10% increased spin potential with poly strings. Most poly strings falls between 5-8% spin potential, which is almost negligible for rec players. It’s better off using multi or even gut for the arm comfort

First, 10% is huge. The second, there is no power with gut/multi strings. The strings are powerful but you cannot hit as hard as with poly and eventually racket head speed drops with gut/multi so power too

The material has to be on the spot as well. Some clubmates tend to spin more than their racquet and strings can handle, and many balls slip down the string till the frame of the racquet comes into play.

TENNIS Spin great info on string,a product that can add alot of spin is the XTP Xtended Tennis Product as most Spin Racquets are XL models,simply remove the factory butt cap and install the XTP and you have just added half an inch to your frame.Heavy Top..Take your standard 27 to the XL XSPIN..thx.j

In terms of spin I could not have done any worse, I play the Blade V7 in 18/20 pattern. But it is always a give and take. My one handed backhand benefits from this setup more than my forehand suffers.

I changed to the Speed MP (16x19) to get more top spin. It definitely helped with topspin, but the slice backhand launches a little high sometimes.

I just bought a new (old version) of Head Extreme Tour. Spec’ed it up with 9 grams between 10-2 and 20 grams of tungsten in the butt cap and an overgrip. I was using a stock Blade V7 and there is a night and day difference of spin between the two.

Dunlop Black Widow 17g string! I keep trying to find a better spin string but I just cannot! Every time I come back to Black Widow, I have shots that drop in that my opponents expect to go out. It doesn't hurt my elbow by the way. If you decide to hybrid the black widow, don't hybrid it with multifilament. It will cut right through the multi. I'm done looking for a better spin string. (Head Speed MP strung at 52)

Love the channel; keep up the great work. I have done quite a lot of experimenting regarding spin optimisation. So far, I have found the most spin friendly set up with the following: Racquet: pure aero VS (Alcaraz) (I recently purchased the pure aero + and I expect it will be even better for spin given the larger head size) Mains: Grapplesnake cube extra sharp 1.25mm (this is square in cross section with very sharp edges) Crosses: Solinco Tour Bite 1.05mm/20G. So far I've only gone as low as 48 lbs because I'm used to playing at higher tensions but I will probably continue to go lower. But I think these geometric strings (especially the square ones) are a game-changer. Interestingly, I also tried 3 other square shaped strings in the mains with a thinner gauge (all 1.2mm) but with equally sharp edges (Völkl v-square, Weiss Cannon Rock n' Power, and Grapplesnake Game Changer). I'm not sure why, but the original set-up with Cube extra sharp at 1.25 mm gauge in the mains, with the thinnest string I have (tour bit 1.05mm) in the crosses gives me the most spin of any combination I have tried.

There are spin friendly racquets… best example ist the pure Aero. It’s basically all about weight distribution, string pattern, tension and Typ of string. Personally I like the Babolat RPM Blast, it’s the classic string for spin. But that’s what i am used to. My Tip: lighten the tension of your crosses, that will help make your setup more spin friendly

What you say about the Wilson Spin Effect racquets is true -- they do add topspin without any changes to your swing -- but there is one ring... er, racquet... to rule them all: Wilson Steam 105s. I own samples of most of Wilson's Spin Effect line up, and I was really hoping that one of the "players" racquets would displace my Steam 105s, but the Pro Staff 97s nor the Blade 98s can match the Steam 105s. I also own and have thoroughly tested Wilson's Ultra 100s, Ultra 110s, and even the Steam 99s but none of those bend the ball like the Steam 105s. Some of those racquets share the Steam 105s' very open 16x15 string pattern, and yet they don't impart the same topspin. I'm not sure why, but part of the answer probably lies in this clue: no racquet breaks strings as quickly as the Steam 105s. There is apparently a huge amount of string movement as the crosses quickly saw through the mains on the 105s. As a stringer, you have probably seen first hand that your Steam 105s customers used to come in every 2 weeks with a broken string. I still regularly use my Pro Staff 97s and Ultra 100s to save the strings on my Steam 105s for important matches. And I carry three Steam 105s in my bag as I've broken two strings in a single session on more than one occasion. The string breaking characteristic is kind of a pain in the butt, but there are few tennis joys that I love more than watching my opponent not playing a ball they think is going long, then dropping their head and holding out their flat palm when they see the ball dip onto the line 😁 (edit) BTW, in case some intrepid reader decides to try the Steam 105s based upon my recommendation, you're going to need to find a very durable string if you want it to survive 15ish hours of hitting. Solinco Hyper-G and Tourna Big Hitter Black 7 are fairly popular strings that will get you close to 15 hours, but after a 1-year search, I finally settled upon a fairly unknown string as a good compromise between performance, durability, and cost: Tier One Black Knight, either 16g or 15g.

It's a little counterintuitive with the string tension. You would think that the soft "cupping" of the strings around the ball before it produces the "snap" would help make a more intense spin, and yet you've got these harder strings where, again, you would think that with so little "give" the ball will come off the strings much more quickly producing much weaker spin. It was my understanding from years back the reason pros played almost exclusively with natural gut strings was to get that "cupping" or "feel" of the ball and having that type of string impart the necessary spin they were looking for. No, full poly and it's not close. Gut/main is great for a hybrid game like Fed plays, but if you want to stand at the baseline and hit 3000 rpms like Rafa or Sinner, full poly is the way to go. When they internally test strings like RPM, they're testing it full poly - how the string slides past itself. That's what it's optimized for. Marcus Giron talked about switching to a hybrid recently, and the higher launch angle and less spin potential made it a bit of an adjustment.

Technique is the major factor for spin. The longer your racket stays on the ball and the greater the surface area making contact, the heavier the ball and the more spin that will be imparted. Multi-shaped poly strings that grip the ball and snap back definitely help, but ultimately, you need to factor in whether the small added spin outweighs things like arm pain, quicker loss of tension, costs, power and feel. Hyper-G is a great string for about 8-12 hours in my case. Can't beat the $12.95 price.

I still use the 2015 Head Graphene Radical MP and use Genesis True Grit 17g for my mains and Head Lynx 17g for my crosses at 52 lbs and get a ton of top spin. Been using that combo for about 2 yrs now. Works great for my slice serve also.

Just learn to play tennis and start with the basics. Make sure you learn the right technique. You only get topspin from the vertical swing path. So choose modern western grip, body rotation, racket to 17.00 hr, knees bend (low) etc. Just kinetic chain. Hardware might support a little bit but marginal when using the right way of technique. Basics people.

Actually it's situational, its better to flatten out on the short balls while spin is preffered near the baseline or behind.
