One experimental album worth mentioning is Not Available by The Residents. It's such a strange album but it's really grown on me and there are some weirdly beautiful moments, and also the project served as a form of personal therapy for the group

I find Stalaggh to actually be one of the most interesting projects I've ever listened to. It's a bone chilling experience of the pains and drowning fears of people with extreme mental health disorders. It's one of the rawest forms of expression.

I haven’t heard it yet, but I listen to a lot of industrial experimental stuff and as he was describing it negatively I just kept liking the idea of it more and more. It’s an insane dark slightly distasteful concept but I’m definitely going to go find that strangling section and telling a friend or two the story behind it

I would say that it is important to distinguish between experimental music (the good), outsider art music (the bad) and underground grindcore shock art (yep, might not be good art, still art though). Honestly neither stallagh nor snail are that bad, i’ve heard worse believe it or not. I’m lowkey interested in stallagh to be honest, if it’s really a live recording of mental patients. Wouldn’t call it experimental music though, at most sound design.

Great video. It would've been cool if you'd also mentioned an album that had been considered the worst ever made but gained some recognition over time: Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. Fun fact: even Lou himself stated that it wasn't meant to be listened completely in one session.

The debate about what exactly is art or not is literally endless, although very interesting if you have nothing more important to do. But most of the time, when we ask if something is art, we actually ask if it should be *celebrated* as art, meaning that we think of art as some sacred thing that ought to always be beautiful, uplifting or pleasant. Extremely bad/weird/both music makeses us to question these assumptions, and i am grateful for that (and for giving us 100gecs). Now, can calling something art be just a pedantic excuse to make the dumbest, most worthless stuff and force everyone around to sit politely through it ? As someone who's suffered way too many conceptual art exhibitions and experimental happenings, i can say that it's not a coincidence if contemporary art is one of the biggest tax shelter.
@underscorerx Жыл бұрын
I don’t like celebratory aspect of art taken for granted and i think it is the root of the problem. To me the solution is simple - if you question if something is art, it is. And the conversation about that piece of art is what gives this piece the actual value that can be celebrated. Sometimes bad examples can be just as valuable, but mediocrity never is. Art is the magic mirror for a civilization.
@shayneoneill150616 күн бұрын
Frank zappa had a really interesting and simple take on "what is art". He said art is "whatever is inside the frame". That is, if an artists points to something they did and says "Thats an art!" then its art. Simple as that.

@shayneoneill150616 күн бұрын
So heres my take on outsider and experimental art. The only failure mode art has is indifference. If it repulses you, then you've felt something, that art changed how you feel. As far as experimentation, even if the experiment doesnt work its still a success because now you know that that thing isnt worth doing. Being *angry* at the music means that the music is succeeding, because you felt something as opposed to, say, supermarket shopping music that makes you feel nothing.

Your reactions show exactly what this kind of music is supposed to do. It makes you uncomfortable. It is interesting to just keep pushing through the music that makes you feel like that. You will learn a lot about yourself. I once was so afraid of the song You/Lacerate by Sister Iodine, that my flight instinct kicked in. No other music was ever able to make me feel like this. So, keep looking beyond the surface. Maybe you'll find something you never expected. 😊
