@ESC Tom , I think the day last year I spent all my morning at work bombarding you with messages "have you done Switzerland yet" until you just gave in was a good day for you 🤗 Gjon, en tant que française en Irlande (et dont la grand-mère qui m'a élevé petite avait été elle-même élevée à Bonfol en Suisse romande), juste un grand merci pour tes deux morceaux de poésie intemporelles. How is it possible to listen to a song and have the feeling you are levitating? Gjon's Tears achieves that effortlessly with a haunting, otherwordly piece with an almost mystical quality. His is an amazing vocalist and the way the song is orchestrically building up is just captivating. The crescendo is giving goosebumps, and when the song finishes, we feel we would like to have more. I don't agree with the video clip which I find distracting, redirecting, and overmelodramatic. But that doesn't matter. Switzerland will be bombarded with jury votes, and the televoters will definitely appreciate the undoubted talent, the vision, and the finesse of this song. He is a serious contestant for the win. And he deserves it. It's unfair to compare him to Repondez moi. Both songs are masterpieces. Other artists that were favourites last year, didn't manage to even come close to their 2020 songs. And some other ones exceeded themselves and the expectations. No matter what, they are not competing with their previous selves. They are competing with each other this year, and Switzerland respects the contest and delivers quality.
@ESCTom3 жыл бұрын
yes, i can see what you mean about how they should be considered alone and not in comparison to last year - especially considering that 95% of the viewers will not have heard the 2020 songs. Personally, the comparison aspect is more out of a desire for a form of justice. Ill never get over the disappointment of Switzerland, Iceland, Lithuania and Bulgaria not having their moment last year. Im making those comparisons because I want them to have that same moment back. and I feel like Lithuania & switzerland are almost exactly in the same place they were last year, and that is the closest I can get to closure for the 2020 disappointment.

Tom, just the fact that you continued talking about this song for a full 10 minutes after listening to it speaks volumes. This is stunningly beautiful and I think the word you were searching for might have been 'primal'. This touches me in so many ways and even without the stunning video I can close my eyes and this feels majestic and cinematic'. In terms of being a contest winner I think this one is actually more accessible to a mainstream audience that Repondez Moi was and, for sure, this will have the jury vote already sewn up. The live performance of Repondez Moi available on youtube confirms without a doubt that Gjon can deliver this on stage too. It has everything an ESC winner needs - a beautiful melody, a journey, peaks and troughs and the ability to touch and make you feel some kind of raw emotion, whatever that is.... Please don't fuck up the staging Switzerland because you have a winner on your hands here. Stunning, stunning, stunning....

Hey Tom, Thanks by another emotional deep reaction to another deep soulful masterpiece song! "This boy is an absolute angel!" 😆 I totally agree! And I totally understand you! Répondez-moi still lives rent free in my heart and was another level of perfection & art that I thought could never be reached again, so I was so nervous & anxious to Gjon's new song. But in my first time listening to Tout L'Univers, in the first notes, I knew there was nothing to worry about. Everything about this song is so magical, emotional, meaningful and touching. I still see how Gjon's artistic vision & soul shines through the song. Gjon's voice is beyond the universe, It's so pure & beautifull! And this song showcase even more his vocal range! And the instrumental is Amazing! That build up is so well produced & when the secound chorus hits, it's so powerful! I appreciate your reaction and I think it would be impossible for "tout l'universe" to cause the same reaction as "respondez-moi". Just because of the fact that you heard "respondez-moi" first. Me personally hadn't heard "respondez-moi", and the first song I heard was "tout t'universe".. I can only agree to your description: it gave me the chills and it touched my soul more than once, and not only the first time I heard it. After listening to "tout l'universe" I was interested to listen to "respondez-moi", and my reaction to it was similar to your reaction to "tout l'universe". Gjon has silenced me. This is such a quality piece of music. I have to admit, I really wasn't a fan of Switzerlands entry last year (shoot me 😅) but this year he really has taken it to another haunting level and in the process has really drawn me in. It has an otherworldly, melodramatic and magical quality that has the ability to transport you from wherever you are to that peaceful, lonely planet where this music seems to come from. Its so rich in emotion and is very dreamlike. I totally am smitten. I'm imagining the staging being simple and atmospheric with the focus just being on him, but as the song builds, the visuals kick in and really push the performance to the next level. Superb.

I think this year's entry is better suited to Eurovision. The crescendo creates a real moment and I can I pay see this contending for victory, and it would be deserved. Like you, Switzerland was my favourite last year, so I was dreading this. But watching the premiere and then seeing people's reactions made me feel happy. The lad's only gone and done it again. Beautiful video by the way. Love your thoughts on the song and Gjon in general.

I really get what you went through watching this. And that was my first thought coming after last year's cancellation. How can you follow up to repondez-moi. Gjon responded by achieving something pretty masterful and grand in scope and that's probably enough for people that will get to know him through this, on that stage, without having heard repondez-moi. To me, it will always be a different type of experience, those two songs. Repondez-moi was that earthly grasp that holds you down on earth while looking beyond, whereas this kind of let's go toward this lightness. That's the only silly way I have to describe this.

This review was so good!!! Repondez moi was by far my favorite last year and one of my favorite ESC songs of all time. Eurovision hasn’t often seen someone of his quality and artistry. The song has a deeply philosophical message, but a very uplifting and empowering one and his voice is just so freaking chilling and haunting and ethereal and gives me goosebumps every time. It really does somehow feel ancient and that’s really beautiful. It was never going to be Repondez moi, but it doesn’t need to be. The vast majority of people who vote will see it for the first time without even knowing Repondez moi is a thing and they will be blown away. Moreover, I actually think this song has more staging potential and is less divisive than Repondez moi.

So...yes. It’s out and it’s everything you say. I did worry this would be a total genre change- it’s not. It is as beautiful as Repondez moi. But where RM was a beautiful mournful and moving song, this is epic, expansive and outward looking. Like standing on the edge of a beautiful vista and looking outwards. And it takes your breath away. I’m not sure how it will do. Definite jury bait but will the audience feel the same. It will need an amazing performance and breath taking visuals to win hearts and minds. To be honest, it doesn’t matter because it will be on the playlist

I see this having finished the final yet, a few weeks ago. But I don't get tired of watching more and more videos of reactions to Gjon's Tears and Måneskin, that this year has become another ones between my favourites ever. Funny enough, my reaction with this one, of this year, "Tout l'univers", was pretty pretty close, to the one you had with "Repondéz-moi". For me, it's also a great song, with astounding vocals like usual in him, nice melody and lyrics, and I like the depth of them too, but it doesn't reach me that much like it happens with " Tout l'univers ". This one gaves me chills, no matter how many times I hear it or watch this video or his performance of this year. I connect with it in a way I don't think I'm able to explain with enough accuracy. It takes me to a parallel universe, I come into a sort of trance. It's, definitely, something else. Something really really special for me. It makes me cry and it's thrilling and moving 💯❤❤ By the way, it's great that Gjon's Tears himself answered to this reaction!!! I'd be soo moved for that. He's so cute and humble. I love him, appart from being so talented. He looks like a wonderful man.

Holy shit, you're gonna fly to the EBU and COMPLAIN?? Sign me up 🤣 Jokes aside though, I had the exact same reaction to this as you, and I've also been DREADING the release of the song because Repondez Moi was, like you said, an absolute masterpiece. It was really something special, how could anything ever compare to that, right? But I actually love this song as well now after a few listens, and after making my peace with the fact that he had to make a new song. Oh btw, you're not the only one overanalyzing the song, so hang on tight friend (I apologize in advance) 🤣🤣 I think Repondez Moi felt deeper, in a way, or at least more personal to the listener. It was more instantly cathartic and vulnerable. However, this song feels bigger, if you know what I mean. I think this song actually is deeper than Repondez Moi when you look into the meaning of the song, but it's not necessarily that evident to the average listener. Tout L'univers is maybe a bit more intellectual than Repondez Moi, so it may feel less accessible at first, but the subject matter is something everyone can actually relate to. I must say though, that I think the visuals this year are way more accessible to the average viewer, and I think that the theme of the music video ultimately managed to win people over, despite the fact that this will never be Repondez Moi. Let's face it, most of us weren't comparing Gjon to the other artists in the contest, but comparing Gjon to himself last year 😅 What a burden to bear for him... Anyway, I noticed that he also seems more confident this year, which is good, however that could maybe take away from the vulnerability he showcased last year a bit. This song is still personal and deep, but can feel less cathartic if you don't know its meaning, but that's why the visuals were so important this time to convince the audience that this song truly is great. I think Repondez Moi really highlighted his falsettos and they let his vocals carry the song to a higher degree than in Tout L'univers. His falsettos kind of force you to listen to him and feel his pain, so it makes sense that Repondez Moi had more of an impact on people emotionally. In this song his falsettos are blended more evenly into the melody and the instrumentation around the bridge especially. I think that's a wise choice actually, for the sake of the live performance. It gives him more room to rather upscale the studio version if he wants to, instead of falling flat on the big stage. That was my biggest fear last year, because singing a song like Repondez Moi live on the Eurovision stage is not the same as an acoustic performance where you hardly even need an earpiece to hear what you're doing. He did preform an acoustic version of the song that was very well executed, but the acoustic live performance didn't give me the same feeling as the studio version did I'm afraid. I think this song will do better live! Overall, I'm really happy with the outcome and I'm glad he didn't try to make Rep Moi 2.0., I'm glad he just tried to make another great song in the same UNIVERSE haha, I need to stop now 😅🤣

Right let's try again -I felt exactly as you did before the song -I like this one probably even better because -5 seconds in, it has the same feel as my favourite fairy tale movie song, Snow white and the huntsman (0:45) and then I felt I knew the song already and ADORED it in advance no matter what it turned into kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5ncdGOha89miMk - the lyrics instantly grabbed me by the throat, they are poetry of a high order, something you can't relate to obviously "cet amour qui nous tord" omg - I didn't even miss the albanian chanting because his balkanness is there in the counterpoints and fine lace of his voice. It's oh so delicate -the video is out of this world -the guy is genuinely like some angel beamed from the heaven come to successfully convert the Norse pagans through christian cantiques.

Yeah, the lyrics this year even > last year. Nobody initially underwhelmed even slightly slightly slightly like you understands French. With the lyrics this song is like a spun sugar version of Neuschwanstein Castle, it's precious and beautiful and heartbreakingly delicate looking - and sooo acceptingly sad you don't dare touch it in case you break it. It's another level entirely from anything else here.

The thing is this Tom: I was waiting a whole year to see how you, you from all the people, would react to his follow up song. From all the songs and from all the reaction and the youtube reaction channels my own personal bet was to see how you would review it. This song is a journey. For my taste not as last years song journey. It is the closest to Radiohead i guess. Not a winner. Top Ten. Magical yes, aetherial yes... And suits to your philosophical passionate description... Yes thats quality. But not a winner.
