We will never know because it's a huge "what if", but it's possible he would've been among the greatest of all time had it not been because of his many injuries. Even after several surgeries, he was always coming back and skyrocketing to the top 10 consistently. Unbelievable player for his conditions.

I think so as well. He beat Nadal and Fed back to back at the US open in 2009. His backhand was insane as well, before his wrist injury. It was as good as his forehand, although his forehand got developed later on when he could not hit his backhand as he used to anymore.

Life is so cruel... I don’t even have the words to say how I feel... I had been waiting since 2019 for his return and now everything seemed ready for a comeback in the top 100. He has just declared his retirement after this tournament... I’m practically crying right now. Del potro is an incredible player and even though he won only one grand slam, this 2009 US Open has the place of 10 grand slams for me. A very great player who is leaving us, so fun to watch. I will really miss you Del Potro, happy retirement and thank you so much for all the incredible matches and performances you gave on the court for us😭😭 The day he retires (so very soon), is a dark day for the ATP.

Anybody who’s played tennis knows how hard it is to control a ball that rips through the court like his. I couldn’t imagine trying to return one of his forehands, even when he isn’t going for an outright winner.

Thanks Delpo for the amazing tennis memories.. your 2013 Wimbledon semi against Novak, your Olympic win against Novak. Your run in Shanghai against Rafa and Novak with those blistering forehands.. Your 2009 US Open, your 2018 Indian Wells. Greatest Forehand of all time in my opinion, lovely interactions with fans and a great sense of humor on court, great sportsmanship, respectful to opponents.. what more can we say.. Thanks for making the past decade even more historic and memorable. Can't wait to see what you do next.

Super sad, one of the unluckiest careers in men's tennis history. Sad about his various injuries- his peak was one of the highest and I think he coulda been a Great with 5+, maybe even 10+, especially in another era, slams had he not been injured. Delpo will be missed

I cant hide my sadness, Delpo had one the most unluckiest careers in sports history in general, a transcendent talent, his frame and his footwork, his overall Tennis IQ and attitude were on par with the big 3 imo and also Murray/Wawrinka, He could have been the next no.1 in the world, he can play on all surfaces, and on top of that his character was so likable to many fans, I hope the best for him after his retirement and long live the Thor of Tandil and his hammer forehand!

He actually won 2009 US open beating nadal in semis and federer in the final and in 2018 was 2 sets to 0 against nadal but nadal retired, putting him in the US open final again

one of the nicest places players on tour, and so, so inspiring in everything he did, how hard he fought against the odds when everyone else gave way to the big 3 so readily. he deserved so much better- had he been free from injuries, he would belong to the same echelon of men’s tennis as roger rafa novak and andy, tormenting NextGen even today. i hope he knows how loved and appreciated he is and sticks around the tennis world a little longer, even as a coach.

Del Potro was my favorite player on tour after Rafa and it's very disheartening to see him go this way. He was an absolute champion and a forever legend. I don't think anybody in the world can hate this guy.

Thank you for these highlights. Had he not had all those injuries he would have been nr 1 for sure at some point. How he came back from all those wrist and knee injuries was so inspiring. He had last good results until 2018, aged 29-30. I think his body is finished now, he had an amazing run all things considered. I will miss him and his amazing humbleness, personality and his legendary forehand.

Beating both fedal to win a slam was a dream for many top players those days and this man became the first man to make it real, such an amazing feat happened only 2 times in tennis history, at 20.9 beating both shows he had really a potential to win 5-10 slams, but then suddenly injuries kicked off, even though injuries kicked off he came back from outside top 100 to top 5 2 times which was also an amazing feat, which shows that he never gave up in his whole career even though being unlucky, what a legend he is

I shouldn't even be surprised, everybody I love retires 😞☹ My favorite player by far. The very first moment I saw him play I was sure he would be a top player, even though he was 6'4 hitting first serves at 110, he just had that it thing. He wasn't scared, he was humble and that forehand 🔥 oh and the presurgery backhand was a beast! Going to miss him and I'll definitely watch the remainder of his matches!!

i remember he was ruthless against top players back in the day when he returned to tour during 2017-18 I thought he is fit to carry on but I was wrong injuries hampered his career and will power so badly will miss you Delpo you are a great champ

Ya that was fearsome hitting from Delpo 🔥. I have only seen it on very few occasions that a fit Nadal is blown from court. Nole in Doha final and Aug open 19 final. Fognini 4th and 5th set from his epic win over Nadal in US open. These springs to the mind. In these matches there were so many winners wherein Nadal had no chance

He was a serious concern for BIG 3 when he was healthy and could play his best. So unfortunate that he had to compete with the consistently amazing BIG 3 and had so many injuries that he had to stay off courts for years. If things were just a bit luckier for him this man could have won like 5 slams at least. He is also very kind-hearted. Poor him. I hope he'll win his last tournament as a small reward.
