Draper knew. You can tell, because the first thing he does when the ball is dead is look at the umpire. Draper doesn't immediately celebrate his win as you would if you hit a clean shot. Nope. He immediately looks to the umpire instead, to see which way he calls the point. Draper KNEW there was an issue with his hit. And as soon as the umpire mentions 'ruling'--but BEFORE he clarifies the ruling is about a 'fair shot', Draper looks behind himself to where he hit the shot. Again, it's because he knew there was an issue. How could he not know, he's a pro tennis player who's hit a million shots & knows how a shank into the ground feels & reacts. I mean, FAA back at his own baseline was able to make the correct call, lol. For many tennis fans, Draper will go down in our esteem despite having won. And FAA will go up in our esteem despite having lost. Because tennis is about more than shots, it's also about sportsmanship & how you conduct yourself.

And if it's a volley there's no way ball can go high like that. Even an amateur player can say this from feel of racquet, i don't know why anyone is not talking about this (maybe because not many who watch tennis play tennis?)

With so much advancement in the technology, it's ridiculous to have these debates. It's so easy to have the challenge system in situations like this. Even if the umpire is sure, if the player feels otherwise, it would have taken less time to just have a replay and decide. In cricket, we do have DRS to resolve this. Seeing instances like this time and again now and this affects players mentally more than just a win or a loss.

The shot looked like it came up off the frame to me, but it’s unclear in the video and I don’t think Draper knew, genuinely. Tough break for FAA but I don’t see how he could’ve seen it clearly through the net either. I honestly think it shanked off his bottom frame and up to the net cord, improbable as it seems, and that’s awful luck for Felix, who handled himself with nothing but class it should be said.

I play college-level tennis several hours a week and have for 30 years. You know when you hit a ball into the ground (or trap it in this case). You can hear it - you can feel it - but you can't see it because nobody watches the ball into exact contact. But it is painfully, painfully, painfully obvious when the ball shanks up at such a trajectory. There is no other way to get that to happen without severely opening the face of the racket or hitting the top of the frame. All the pro players have 100x more experience than me - all the players know this. The officials should be trained on this but they are not. Kudos to Felix for the cool head. I like Jack but he wasn't looking at Felix while volleying (that's ridiculous) and I think he'll look back with regret on this.

Draper definitely knew. A tennis player knows how a ball feels when it hits your racket. The way the ball got over the net is only possible if you get the racket underneath the ball with smooth touch. In the replay you see the ball hit the frame of the racket. Even kids can tell if a ball hits the frame, let alone an ATP pro player. Bad sportmanship of Draper, and this umpire should not be assigned to matches for a while.

I took a video that was shown on ESPN and it plays it in ultra slow motion. The ball hits the bottom of the racket and is deflected towards the floor, it bounces and comes back up and bounces back off the racket and goes over the other court. The strangest thing is that the video never plays in another slow motion on ESPN, and they have that technology. Why they didn't show the video in slow motion?. We already know why! ESPN cannot question a referee's decision (ATP)

Yes, I think this is exactly what happened. If you take the video of the highlights, set the playback to 0.25, and play/pause manually frame by frame, you can see the ball hits the racket, which deflects the ball down, the racket gets pushed back by the impact, and then as the ball bounces back up of the ground, Draper makes contact with ball lifting it up and over the net

So it you look at it closely.. you can see it definitely hit the frame, and part of the ground..... however, if it was a 'clean' volley it would've just moved forwards and likely hit the net with close to no power. The ball trajectory ended upwards and the only explanation was he shanked it into the ground for it to bounce over the net. You could clearly see and hear it looked dodgy the moment it left Draper's racquet.

Lol! Why are there so many people here defending the umpire and Jack??? At 1:08 it's pretty clear that the ball hits Jack's racquet and _THEN_ hits the ground on Jack's side of the court before going over the net! Some of the comments on this video are making me feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Too many people enjoy going against the grain. No one with an access to KZbin, and a good pair of eyes (glasses), ability to judge body language, can be confused by what happened here. Draper knew he missed the ball the moment he hit it. His instinctive reaction is that of being resigned and angry. Notice that at no point is he defending this as his point. He wants to "replay" it. That seems to ease his guilty conscience.

I did exactly that and saw the ball touching first the floor, then the racquet, but it's really unclear (not enough frames). What do you think? Either way, in such an uncertain situation I don't know why the don't simply replay the point, it's crazy to decide such a tight and important match on a "subjective coin toss" like that

@flavienhirsch1393 There's one frame where the ball is wedged between the racquet frame and the ground. Then it pops up and Draper hits it with his strings. So it is an illegal shot but not in the way everyone is saying.

Of course JD knew the ball bounced on the floor; otherwise, it wouldn't have traveled at such an angle. Just look at his body language-he's fully aware of it. As many have rightly pointed out in the comments, if the ball did bounce, he'd lose the point. Kudos to FAA for keeping his composure and avoiding a confrontation with JD.

It looked clean. These guys need real-time replay ability. If anything Jack reacted like he double tapped it, but I don't think he did. Not sure Felix could be sure of a shank bounce from that distance. Ball went too high for that. Insufficient evidence to overrule. Tough time for it. Gotta win by KO. No judges.

watching the actual point at the beginning of the video, it's pretty easy to tell the ball bounced. Draper's racquet face was not open enough for the ball to go over the net if it had hit the strings. Not to mention the sound the ball made when it hit the ground, that was a loud rubber sound after the point of contact.

The idea would be that it hit the ground and then bounced into the racket frame. I don't think anyone thinks it hit the strings. I see it as hitting the frame and then the ground. Everything points to that, in my opinion, however, the racket is basically a ball diameter from the ground at contact, so I do get a bit why people may see it differently. Maybe Draper was too caught up in the emotions of the match but he should definitely be able to feel the difference.

How was he looking to break a break down on match point. He was looking to survive more like. Also the first person to say can we not just check a replay etc. If they do and say yeah its FAA point they continue, and maybe draper still wins anyway. But you cant win a match from a match point down. You can survive it and turn it around maybe but you're not painting a fair picture here.

​​@@Darrenski Jack Draper was serving. Meaning, FAA is looking to break (because otherwise, Draper holds). If this point was correctly called then the game goes to deuce. It's not like this was a 40-0 situation, if the ump wasn't blind then they go to deuce where FAA can look to break him by winning the deuce.
