As an Iga fan the olympic loss still haunts me ... She was saying for years that it was her biggest goal - to win a gold medal on Paris clay. When she came to Paris I thought there was no way she's losing as she just won RG a few weeks ago. But after first matches we could see how stressed and tense she was, she was playing not even close to her level in May. I think the pressure was just too much. But the fact that she lost on a surface where she has been UNBEATABLE for 3 years straight with a record of 35-2...and she lost to a player she never lost to and they played against each other 6 times...(absolutely no offece to Zheng, it's just that the loss could have been more understandable if it was Penko or Rybakina at the other side of the net). And Iga was 4-0 in the second set....I literally sobbed during that match... You never know what future has in store, maybe Iga wins a gold medal in 2028 (maybe, just speaking hypothetically) but I feel like nothing will replace that loss and she will sadly remember this as the most hearbreaking failure in her whole career...

I was gutted for her. The pressure was probably especially high as a lot of us and her country thought she had gold in the bag with it being on clay. I was happy for Zheng but yeah, I hope Iga’s back to form next year.

Idk I think you have 1 and 2 flipped - Iga definitely went into her match a bigger favorite than Alcaraz did in his. He didn’t play well at all in the US Open warm up tournaments.

Iga losing her confidence after seeing her gold medal get robbed from her was one thing, but that Blinkova loss also dented Rybakina’s confidence and spelled a very bad omen for her 2024 season as she failed to win any “big” titles, missed half of the 1000’s due to physical and mental problems, sacked her coach Stefano Vukov after reports that they weren’t getting along, she played absolutely terrible in tiebreaks all year (a huge dropoff from her impressive 17-5 tiebreak record in 2023) and dropped out of the top 5 in the rankings for the first time since May 2023. The fact she lost to both Sabalenka and Swiatek in the ongoing WTL exhibition in Abu Dhabi shows that she’s definitely in a rebuild and will have a lot of work to do with Goran Ivanisevic if she wants to beat the Big 2 (yes, it’s a Big 2 of Iga and Aryna, definitely not a Big 4 yet as Elena and Coco still have to do a lot) and get herself back to Slam-winning form in 2025.

Zheng in Olympics for sure, Rybakina never beat Blinkova in career, which means there's something in Blinkova's style she can't deal with, like Iga with Ostapenko, there is that stuff in women's tennis.

Same reason why Rybakina lost to Krejcikova at Wimbledon. Krejcikova’s style is very crafty and knows how to shut her down, which the unbeaten 3-0 H2H record definitely says. Samsonova is also another kryptonite matchup for her, though she did finally get a win there in Abu Dhabi. You could even argue now that Paolini seems to be in this conversation given her movement and defensive playstyle, the type of game style that Elena can’t exactly figure out.

Managing up downs travel losses ect must be really tough and throw in finances its like master juggler to stay afloat in tennis world ! Now add injuries and relationships becomes almost insane ! No wonder they come and go so fast but Krejcikova seems to stick around managing the multi ingrediant soup ! Halep would have manged it but i think they screwed her ! Maybe she will prove resiliant

Do not say nosKOVa, please say NOSkova. Do not say blinKOVa, please say BLINkova. It's so easy to learn the correct pronunciations. Why don't you do it?

He’s American, they put emphasis on different syllables (being another language than that where the surname originates). I’m sure he tried but it seems he didn’t know the proper pronunciation. Now that you’ve told him (if he reads your comment) he may adjust. No need to be rude about it, you can correct without being condescending. It’s so easy to be kind to other people. Why don’t you do it?

These athletes are likely so grateful that they're being spoken about at all. Pretty sure they are less bothered than the pronunciation police haunting these sports sites.

@@nightswimmer99 If you want to silence the "pronunciation police," it's simple. Just put forth a little effort and a few minutes to learn how to say names correctly.
