The problem here were the politics of the industry at the time. Jose Carreras has never been a proficient English speaker, his pronunciation is atrocious. And yet, he was hired for this role, essentially for marketing reasons, just to increase Carreras' profile in the English-speaking market. But Bernstein was all about the music, and the lyrics are most definitely part of the music. That's why he's SO annoyed. He was basically told "here's a broken violin, but you're contractually obliged to use it." So, he had to use it. But he was not contractually obliged to hide his feelings. See how ill-prepared Carreras was. He couldn't learn the lyrics, so he had them written down. He couldn't follow the director's direction because he was looking down at the lyrics. Which, in turn, meant he couldn't follow the time signatures... which is pretty poor too, to be honest. Most musicians can follow a time signature inside their own heads while playing. And, even if he was able to do all this and not mess up, turns out his pronunciation was terrible too! So he'd mess up words and it was going to be absolutely impossible to get a fluid final take. Awful, absolutely awful.

And yet if Bernstein had allowed some text corrections to take place Carreras might have got closer to being in time. The fact is this is a very wordy song - lots of lyrics. Even native English language singers would have to have a certain dexterity of articulation to sing it. Carreras had worked mainly in Italian and Spanish with the odd excursion into French. I doubt very much if there was a great rehearsal period prior to recording and because singers have so much to do at one time - producing the voice correctly, breathing, hitting the right notes and rhythm as well as words and interpretation, listening and staying in tune Carreras struggled with all those consonants and groups of consonants that pepper the English language. The basic principle is the that the vowel sounds on the beat and the consonant slightly before to help keep the rhythm flowing, but if the singer is struggling with consonants ( especially with the ending of one word and beginning of the next) then there is a cumulative effect and they get behind the beat. Rehearsal and recording sessions can be stressful and there is the clock to consider - all credit to Carreras he tried to deliver the goods here.

Nice to see the musical reasoning here. For bonus music trivia that adds context, one of the things that Bernstein became well-known for was inserting elements of American pop/folk music into the European classical formats. Along with those styles came a bunch of African rhythms that classically-trained musicians had rarely encountered. This led to situations like this. Add a little pressure, a deadline, a cup of coffee, and nothing snaps up. I know I've been there. The loose feel of folks who don't exactly have the rhythms nailed comes through on the recordings of Bernstein's work. There are sometimes little sections where the European orchestra is doing their 19th century-esque classical stuff... but then has to switch to a rag-time or blues feel and back again. But... it's not quite there. It's the like orchestra switches from uber-tight professionals in tails to a bunch of slightly tipsy friends playing at a wedding, and back again, in eight bars. The slight sloppiness is often stylistically appropriate, in my mind. Personally, I like it. lol There was a cringe-inducing super-edit of classical musicians trying to play basic poly-rhythms, like quarter-note triplets, etc. If anyone has seen it... I'd love to find it again. I've been in that positions so many times, and it's horrible. You're at a gig for a genre you're unfamiliar with, and it's a black hole of embarrassment and confusion. 1/10 Would not recommend taking good gigs without enough prep.

Carreras’ discomfort and chagrin is so palpable that you can find the sequence on KZbin under the title “Tenor Keeps Screwing Up while Bernstein Conducts-Awkward Sequence,” as if he were some weedy upstart, still wet behind the ears, when in fact, he had just flown in from Verona, where he’d been appearing as Don José in Carmen. I read in the comments that Bernstein wanted another singer to do the part. Maybe it'd have been better giving it to Bernstein guy, in fact to any guy provided that he would have one day to study the score and another day of rehearsal with the orchestra before the recording. He could have got Billy Joel. Or Phil Collins. If you ask me, after knowing all the circumstances, I think Carreras is quite amazing, in his place it would have been me who would have left the room and said "so long", Bernstein, Karajan or Jesus.

He wasn't the best choice for this music. Renata Tebaldi would have been a bad fit for Santa Baby, and Eartha Kitt would have been a bad fit for Madam Butterfly.Because he's a great singer, and because he was working with Bernstein - a great composer and a great conductor - the problems are ironed out (that's what rehearsals are for) and the final recording is wonderful - but I doubt that anybody, not even Carerras himself, would cite this recording as the one which best showcases his talents. The maestro attended the opening concert, in which we played. The conductor fouled up in "The Age of Anxiety" by beating a measure of three that was in a long, uninterrupted section in two, throwing everyone off. He tried unsuccessfully to recover, but fortunately the piano soloist managed to get back in, and we got it together. Afterward there was a reception, and the great man spoke. He congratulated a few people and then said, as I recall, that we youth orchestra kids were amazing because we go to school and do our homework all day, so it's no wonder we're tired. What a jerk. Beautiful tenor tone. There are many great recordings with this man. But, unfortunately, this is not one of them. Basically, he has a European's feel for rhythm, which is great for singing the various operatic roles he has in his career. But...this has equipped him to feel a very strong emphasis on beats 1 and 3. Although West Side Story is not jazz in the sense of recordings by the Duke Ellington Big Band, or maybe Charlie Parker's classic quintet of the 1940's, the score of this show is packed with a lot of jazz and Latin phrasing, in both the orchestra parts and the songs. This piece in particular puts a good number of demands on the singer in terms of rhythm and the jazz or rhythmic "feel", if you will, has to be there. And in general, although Jose does a game job of trying very hard to execute, he doesn't have the right feel rhythmically when he sings this tune. Sometimes he rushes, sometimes he drags. This is one of those tunes where you have to stay on top of it at all times. And he sounds pretty square, rhythmically. There are symphony players and classically trained singers who can do cross-over work in the jazz, pop, and R-n-B worlds, but it's obvious from this recording that he is not one of them. To be fair, asking someone to sing in a language that is secondary or tertiary to them is a tall order, but asking them to really work outside of the melodic, harmonic, and especially (in this case) rhythmic realm that they are used to is at best a bit of a stretch. It's always noticeable when this happens with classically trained singers or players who get thrown into a situation like this for the first time. Jazz, especially, has an African root to its rhythm that doesn't exist in European classical music, nor in the folk musics. It also doesn't exist in traditional east Asian musics. It's something that developed here in America, and just like any other tradition in the world, has to be listened to, studied, and absorbed slowly over time until it becomes second nature. Unfortunately, Sig. Carreras doesn't have this approach in his musicianship. No fault of his, it's just that his career took him in a different direction. I'm sorry he kind of got caught between a rock and a hard place. I'm sure Bernstein probably took his time in the future vetting soloists that he chose for any projects like this after this experience. Before anyone gets too upset with my comments, please understand that I have great respect for both men, and if there is any blame at all to assess, it should probably go to someone who was higher up in the decision-making process that led to this very stressful day for both men. They both tried to do their best. And if anyone's interested, I'm a professional musician. Have been playing for over 40 years, got degrees in music theory and jazz composition from SUNY Potsdam (1980) and New England Conservatory of Music (1994), with high GPAs, for whatever that's worth. Also, I retired about 8 1/2 years ago from the USAF Bands after 27 years of playing piano, keyboards, arranging, composing, singing, directing, rehearsing, and all sorts of things across the world at 6 different bases. I've played with the Mills Brothers, the Four Lads, Helen Redy, Sadao Watanabe, Rufus Reid, Eddie Daniels, etc, etc, as part of my AF band duties, been to a lot of countries in Europe and Asia, speak Italian, some French, a little Spanish and Portuguese, and a little Japanese. I've also been listening to and playing stuff from West Side Story since I was about 13 (I'm almost 60), so I know this show and it's songs and score pretty well. Played in concert bands, orchestras, jazz big bands, jazz combos, rock bands, have done solo gigs, conducted pit orchestras, done vocal coaching, lived in Italy for 3 years in the '80's and Japan for 4 in the early 2000's. I'm not the be-all and end-all for musicians, but I'm still playing gigs and teaching music in a local college here in Huntsville, AL. So, you could say I've been doing this for a while. That all being said, I think SIg. Carreras did his best, and although some moments are painful to watch, I've seen similar scenarios go on in both military and civilian band rehearsals, and basically I just feel for him. It was a "very tough day at work." The good thing is, even though it can be frustrating and humbling to go through something like this, you (and especially I) will always learn from it, and it doesn't have to be a career-ender. Respectfully, PMH

Yes, he just doesn’t have the feel for this music. It is clear that he is trying mightily to sing precisely, but without the right feeling, it is clunky, with all of the wrong emphasis. It’s as if the effort itself is getting in the way of the flow.

PMH I agree with your assessment. I really think that at this point, Bernstein and the others should have realized that the more angry they seemed, the more tense Carreras was going to be, and the more he was going to rush each downbeat. Obviously he wasn't very comfortable with this kind of rhythm, but with some relaxation and gentle coaching, he could have improved drastically. They needed a 30 min break to just work it out at a piano, without the orchestra, making sure Carreras feels comfortable and confident. It might not have worked, but it would have been a better shot than the repeated face-palming that we see in this video.

I’m no conductor, but I felt myself too getting frustrated when Carreras was speeding. But it’s incredible to see the work build into a wonderful collaboration.
@jmer912610 ай бұрын
Do you think maybe the syncopation was one of the factors making him speed up?
@canalesworks12478 ай бұрын
I am a conductor and I can say that when Bernstein says "watch me" it isn't all that helpful. Bernstein was more of an "inspirational conductor" than a guy with a great stick technique. The beat is not all that clear, which is why Carreras looked up and didn't get any further wiht the syncopations. That one is on Lenny. Give Bernstein the NY Phil and he could work miracles. They didn't need a clear stick. They needed emotional direction. Carreras needed a clear stick here and he didn't get it.

this was probably the worst decision in the history of recording classical music. To employ Carreras for this role namely. Bernstein said it himself...

Bernstein originally wanted Jerry Hadley but he had a contractual conflict. Bernstein knew what would work for his music. There's no reason a classically trained Singer should not be able to work in different styles.

It was probably extremely stressful however because they went through all of this, we were able to hear a masterpiece. Practice no matter how frustrating it is, is absolutely necessary for everyone to work together to create something wonderful, and Bernstein knew that.

Bernstein even if he's pissed off protects the integrity of his singer when he's on his wing. Bernstein is tough but he knows his artists and he pushes them to their limits. He makes their people become better at what they do. Bernstein is tough but he's righteous doing his work.

I think sometimes it's easy to forget how much harder it can be to sing in a language that isn't your first language. Plus, that, "Something's coming, I don't know what it is.." passage is rhythmically tricky on top of it. My heart was breaking for Carreras just a little bit.
