For most opera fans, the name Otello is solidly associated with Giuseppe Verdi. Opera Philadelphia - in keeping with the spirit of its Festival O22 - will instead perform Gioachino Rossini’s lesser-known take on Shakespeare’s drama, with all the fireworks one can expect from a bel canto opera.
Premiering on Sept. 23, the production features star tenor and Opera Philadelphia artistic advisor Lawrence Brownlee, but not in the title role: he’s making his 18th Rossini role debut in the even more stratospheric part of Rodrigo, while South African tenor Khanyiso Gwenxane makes his American debut as Otello.
Both tenors recently stopped by the WRTI Performance Studio with Opera Philadelphia’s head of music staff, Grant Loehnig, to talk about the piece and give us a musical taste.

Brownlee and Pavarotti are, in my humble opinion, the finest tenors of our time. Outstanding singer!

He’s amazing, one of the truly great one’’s, but fame is another ball game. There are a few dozen tenors, sopranos, baritones, each of the past century who were as good as Brownlee (same may say better) who never got as famous as Pavarotti or Caruso. Marylin Horne was a huge star and one of the greatest mezzos of the 20th century. She also had the same manager. She asked him once, “I want to have a career like his! Can I please have the ‘Pavarotti treatment’”? His response to her was, “you can’t have the ‘Pavarotti treatment’ because you aren’t Pavarotti.” Herbert Breslin wrote an entire book which was basically about how and why Pavarotti got famous. Want real details to your question, read it; it’s a great read! Caruso’s fame came because of two major reasons, 1) he was the first great tenor who made top notch operatic recordings on the new invented phonograph, and 2) because the way he used his voice and technique broke down barriers in opera and excited an entire world to a new kind of singing.
