I was a little surprised by the music at 11:30. I don't normally expect to hear Japanese light music played in such a serious setting. Beautifully played, though. I've always loved the song, and this is an excellent version.

This instruments looks extremely bulky and awkward to play on the arm like a viola. Wouldn't it be more convenient to play such an instrument in the lap, and you could make the body bigger for a fuller, richer sound?

Yes it is bulky, therefore not everyone can play. Probably also a reason, that tenor viola are hardly to be found in orchestras. But I find the sound of the C string much better than that of small viola. Da Spalla attitude is also possible why not. This Instrument is a copy of Andrea Guarneri 1664. The body lenght is 481mm.

Dreizehn Instruments The standard viola doesn't sound as good because it is too small, restricted by the fact that it is, as with this tenor viola, played on the arm. It should have been replaced with a larger instrument held vertically centuries ago. A larger viola would quickly put an end to all those viola jokes.

They do exist ("alto" violin of the nvfo), but they sound really disappointing and don't project nearly as well as da spalla tenor and alto violas.

It is very comfortable for me to play. Small violas are very uncomfortable and unnatural for me. One must understand the viola and the approach to it as opposed to the violin.
