I find that the greater sustain and reduced string tension on the baritone makes it one of the most comfortable, playable string instruments I own. For finger style music, it has the rich tone of a classical guitar but in a much more portable form factor. For strumming though, it’s a little too dark and muddy, and can get lost in a jam session. And it lacks the tao and sparkle that makes the ukulele the ukulele. One thing I’d like to try is a reentrant tuning on a baritone. A good excuse to acquire more ukuleles…

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Having multiple instruments gives us so many different colors we can draw upon and each can fulfill different tasks.

Excellent comparison Jeff. I have a low G baritone, low G tenor, and high G tenor. A lot of times.....when I learn something on my low G tenor......I'll also play it on my baritone.....using the same fingering. It breaks the monotony of playing it just on my tenor.

So I have only been playing Ukulele solidly for about 5 months now, my first Ukulele was a tenor, an Enya EUT-MAD. I liked it a lot and still play it from time to time especially after changing the strings to low G, but it didn't have the sound I wanted. I later discovered the existence of the baritone uke and bought a nice Kala SCAC-B which had much more of a guitar sound I wanted to play without the much larger learning curve of having 6 strings. I now own 4 Baritones including an 8-string Kala and a Flight Aurora EQ-A. I am short, only 5'6" with short fat fingers, and I have no idea how any guys taller than me can comfortably play a concert let alone a soprano uke. I struggle to even play a tenor as my fingers are so cramped trying to play a D chord even with various fingering placements that I only succeed in not muting other strings half the time. The baritone not only is so much easier for me to play even though I need to really stretch my short fingers in order to form some chords including barre chords, but because the strings are so much looser than on the tenor, I have a lot more fine control of the volume and I can play songs more softly and can express more emotion from the baritone ukulele.

I play tenor uke as a first instrument from March 2024. You said you are struggling with D chord, but did you actually tried to use the thumb to cover D from top, GCE strings instead of trying to use index, middle and ring cramped together. I say with thumb on the top is much easier to Grab D and D7 as well. Enjoy playing and always check for different varients for same chords.

@@Marcin_Kaszubowski Thank you for your reply. It has been a long time since I wrote the comment above and have developed a bit more skills since then. I can now comfortably play on a Tenor for the most part to play songs, but the Baritone is still my main musical instrument that I play for hours daily. I have practiced the technique of placing my thumb on the low E string when I play guitar and have been successful, but strangely I never thought to do that on the Tenor uke before. I tried it just now, and it works great! Thanks for the tip.

Hello Jeff, thanks for this video on the difference of Tenor vs Baritone. I have played guitar for many years but only for my enjoyment, then thought of getting a Tenor Ukulele, but I think I was sold a preloved baritone as the scale length is 20 inches. It was strung with Low G wound so normal tuning GCEA, but the 1st 'A' never 'bottoms' out and always going flat. It eventually snapped! I notice a comment here that someone else uses a baritone on Low G. If I tune to GCEG, the 1st stays in tune longer. What strings would you suggest please so can enjoy my new instrument. Looks like I will have to 'butter up' my other half and purchase a 'proper' tenor as well! Sorry for the length of this post, love your playing. Graham

Great lesson. I bought a concert Kala in Kona and got a baritone that won't stay in tune now, I'm contemplating upgrading the tuning machines and get a Donner tenor for my daughter. This video helped a lot.

So interesting. Did I understand you correctly, that the string tension is actually looser on the baritone? Does it use nylon guitar strings? Or are there fluorocarbon baritone ukulele strings? I’m enjoying your classical music book for the tenor very much. Thank you for making that material easily available.

The string tension on my baritone is more loose than the tenor. I have used D'Addario Pro Arte classical guitar strings, nylon baritone strings, and flourocarbon baritone strings.

Thanks for posting this promo for Baritone and providing another quality learning pathway for students. I haven't seen a side by side comparison before online. I was anticipating / hoping that you would demo the tonal differences by playing the same tune in the same Key on each. I think you demoed C to F on Tenor and G to C on Bari? and used the same fingering on the Jazz demo so different Key again? This approach highlighted the deeper mellower tone on the Bari but you're playing lower so it should anyway? Any chance of a side by side in the same Key? Pleased to hear someone spruiking the option to Capo the Bari for a two in one instrument and interesting to hear your take on what styles are complemented on each. With all Fluro strings I agree that the string tension is lower on the Bari which may be a very attractive option for Beginners to be able to get clean fretting on some shapes faster / more easily - especially Barre chords.? I think I was hearing the Tenor pop out more (much brighter) in the Jazz demo and the BBari more muted / muddy, but maybe that was because of the Key difference as well? i like to think of Baritone as a Gateway to Guitar especially for younger kids ... what are your thoughts about this transition vs straight to 3/4 or full size Guitar for young children smaller hands?
@LouisCiarlo Жыл бұрын
I like ‘em both. As you stated, it’s good to have more than one. In fact, I would want a Tenor, a Baritone and a U-bass! That and a small combo amp would make gigging a breeze.

Thanks for demonstrating the rich differences of these two instruments. What are your thoughts on the g-c-e-a tuning for a baritone? I ask this question as a beginner player that really likes the low sounds of the baritone.
@JeffPetersonGuitar Жыл бұрын
I have never tried the GCEA tuning but have tried both reentrant (high D) and linear (low D) DGBE tunings. I donʻt know if the higher tuning would work or if it would create to much tension for the size/scale of the neck on a baritone.

I'm looking to go the other direction. I have a tenor, but I'm considering purchasing a soprano. But since classical music is my preferred genre, is it possible to have a soprano uke with a low G?
@UkuleleCorner Жыл бұрын
Hi John, The low G tuning is ideal on the concert or tenor size but can work on a soprano.
@johnfeagans7087 Жыл бұрын
Years ago I took your advice, Jeff, before you offered it. :^) For @johnrushman9330 you can purchase wirewound low G for tenor which will also work on concert. I own multiple ukulele and leave them in string, tuning, even slack for whatever fancy hits me at the moment. @@UkuleleCorner

I have a Baritone Ukulele Makala MK-B, I think they have better sound. But out of my 4 strings, D and G sound good, B and E are average. Does anyone know if I can change B and E to D and G. To give a bass type of sound.
