Tenryo Hita - A Town Harmonizing History and Nature

Hita City has prospered as a crucial hub of transportation connecting various areas in northern Kyushu since ancient times. During the Edo period, it developed as a domain directly governed by the Tokugawa Shogunate, serving as the political, economic, and cultural center of Kyushu. Even today, it offers rich tourist spots with numerous historical buildings, cultural heritage, and artistic elements.
*Mameda Townscape
Mameda Town, a castle town with preserved old streetscapes dating back to the Edo period, is often referred to as "Kyushu's Little Kyoto." This small town is scattered with sake breweries and miscellaneous goods stores, making it a popular tourist destination designated as an important traditional building preservation district.
* Hita Gion Yama Hoko Kaikan
This facility exhibits the splendid and luxurious floats associated with Hita's summer festival, "Hita Gion," boasting a tradition of approximately 300 years. The Kaikan provides an opportunity to learn about the history of Hita Gion.
* Onta Pottery Village
About a 30-minute drive north from Mameda Town, there is the "Onta Pottery Village." Onta pottery, established in 1705, is known for its traditional method where clay is crushed using a water-driven mill in the valley, and the pottery is fired in a climbing kiln using traditional techniques. The sound of the mill grinding clay is recognized as one of "Japan's 100 Soundscapes," and the entire area is designated as an important cultural landscape, evoking a sense of nostalgia.
* Takatsuka Atago Jizo Son
About a 30-minute drive east from Mameda Town, you'll find Takatsuka Atago Jizo Son. Around 1200 years ago, during a pilgrimage, Gyoki, a high-ranking Buddhist monk, stayed in the spiritually charged area of Hita (Takatsuka) and carved a Jizo Bodhisattva statue. After Gyoki's passing, locals enshrined this Jizo Bodhisattva, marking the beginning of Takatsuka Jizo Son. This unique Jizo Son, retaining a fusion of Shinto and Buddhist elements, is known for its approximately 2000 Jizo statues. Many visitors come throughout the year to pray for healing, academic success, business prosperity, and other wishes.
* Sakurataki (Cherry Blossom Waterfall)
About a 30-minute drive southeast from Mameda Town, there is Sakurataki, or Cherry Blossom Waterfall. The cascading waterfall creates numerous fine streams, and the spray resembles cherry blossoms, hence the name Sakurataki. This waterfall, admired for its delicate beauty, has been cherished by literati and calligraphers since the Edo period.
