Enginerd coming in. There is a problem with your tensile testing method. The gents in the white lab coats conduct tensile tests at near static conditions. A strain rate of 0.02mm/sec, the sciency way of saying, stretch it out super slowly. Your test works much faster, this will mess with your results when you get to strain rate sensitive alloys. Alumimnum is a huge dickhead about this but almost all metals have some sensitivity to strain, and behave differently depending on the rate. EDIT: I'm not saying that the fun version doesn't have merits or applications in testing. I'm saying that understanding the potential limitations and errors is an important step in applying your results to the real world.

What you say is true but in the world outside and away from ASTM the stresses can be applied at any rate from almost zero to explosive speeds. Where it's not practical to use a test prescribed strain rate usually an adjustment can be made in the test results based on rate of loading effects.

@ AvE, Have you thought about adding a strain gauge to this? The easiest way would be to have 2 sheets of transparent film. Print onto them a row of lines, with slightly different spacing on each. Then attach one to the top and one to the bottom of the tensile tester so they overlap. As you pull the bolt, it'll make interference patterns that will let you quite accurately measure the strain.

When I was doing heat tracing we called them trophies. We replaced another heat tracing crew who had a pile of trophies 20 feet across and ten feet high. That made it pretty clear why they got replaced.

Having just pulled a motor out of an old ute, I can say that every bolt that had anti-seize on it came unstuck like it had just been tightened down, love the copper coat! Look forwards to seeing the tests

Brings back memories. as a young buck in the oilfield and new shop hand. this was the mid 90's I was sent by the shop foreman to get a bolt stretcher as a joke. well little did he know I was a trained and vo tech school certified machinist, and knew they were a real thing and ware to get one. so off to tea old industrial nut and bolt supplier. and told the guy behind the counter what I was sent for he shot me the price of 150K - USD for the deluxe kit. and asked me for a PO so I called the office the boss picked up the phone after a bit of phone swapping on their end no one else was willing to authorize it. wants me to explain myself.then he asked to talk to the salesman an hour and some later I have a big box on the back of the duse. well, I pull up to the shop and hop out and hand the shop foreman the pile of paperwork with a price tag of 200.K - USD and nonreturnable rubber stamped on it. about this time the boss walks in and demands to know whats in the box. .. he sweated the shop foreman for a bit telling him that it was a tool and as such since he ordered it without prior approval was coming out of his pay. After some arse kissing and but boss ity was suposed to be a joke. and begging the boss let him off the invoice was a fake the box contained our usual order of fasteners and whatnots the shop foreman made my life hell until a rigging crew needed a hand.

I work at a materials testing lab and we have 3 tensile testers up to 300 kips. If you ever want me to test some nuts or bolts in them, I’m happy to do so, as we have all the fixtures for bolts from 1/4” to 1 1/2”

We use the Instron 3385H tensile tester here at the university for our enginerding stress strain learning. Just did some tests on AISI 1018, 1045, 4140 and some aluminium 6061-T6. Twas a grand old time.

You would never see beachmarks of a straight pull, because the load was not cyclic. The beachmarks are formed when there is cyclic stress just below ultimate failure, repeatedly. With each cycle the fracture grows a little more, then closes back up until it finally fails. But in a straight pull to failure there is no cyclic effect.
