Tension Run High While Icelanders Expect Volcanic Eruption Number 8 Any Day Now

The level of uncertainty runs very high now although the MET office claims that we might have to wait a bit longer, but we will know the truth soon enough. First and foremost we hope that all infrastructure and the town it self will survive the next event but since we have already about 14 million cubic meters of magma ready to take off, my expectations are modest, most likely to safe my self from further disappointments since this journey hasn't been easy.

Gylfi, in my opinion you are the #1 Rock Star & real life Master of recording factual videos/ data for the history archives of your beloved Iceland. No guesswork is involved..just the facts as they appear through the eye of the camera or drone. Your dedication and journey are not unnoticed, sir. I am in total agreement with you.... my lifelong philosophy to my children (as well as other people who are naysayer's) has been, "Where there's a will, there's a way!" 😉👍 Remember too.... It's 3am here in Finland. I'm listening to your video..Iceland is not so far away, but it seems like you guys live on another planet. The ground beneath you moans and groans and spits out fire. I just can't imagine what that is like and what that does to a human being living on top of a volcano. Icelandic people must be tough. Thanks for letting us take a peak at the Icelandic living through your camera. Lets hope there will be happier days ahead ..Waving at you from Kalajoki 👋😊 Have a lovely Sunday!

Thank you so much for your videos. I have followed you for a long time. I live in the US but doesn't the weather get foggier as you get towards the warmer seasons? My fear is that it will be a very foggy day when the next eruption happens. It might be very hard during those first hours to see where the lava is flowing. That could be bad for evacuations.

3 months ago, a scientist told Iceland news "all the magma" will move far away from Grindavik and never return again. Then the volcano blew up, and oozed lava directly towards Grindavik for 2 months straight. But hey, at least that entirely wrong scientist was famous for a day.
@KatlaJokulsdottir
@KatlaJokulsdottir 4 ай бұрын
Who was this and could you provide a link or something? There have definitely been some predictions not turning out quite true, but right now I cannot recall anyone saying with certainty - as opposed to offering speculations - that the lava would not return. By the way, unless your source was a direct, lengthy recording from that scientist, there is also quite a chance that media either pushed the guy to make something of a best guess which they could then "sell" as prediction, or simply selected the most prediction-like statement the person made. I know these things to happen easily - an office mate of mine had researched a small feedback process on sea level rise (if more water enters the sea, the sea floor will be pushed down a little, which reduces sea level rise a little). The media were driving him crazy for at least a afternoon, trying to extract from him a statement like "sea level rise is all wrong". The poor guy kept and kept repeating: "NO!!! This is only a TINY effect!!! It does NOT mean that sea level rise won't happen!!" Media love statements that are definite (rather than hedged with uncertainties) and new or controversial (one scientist says that all the rest always got it wrong) and tend to zoom in on these things unduly.

Hey we have all been wrong, from us Monday morning QBers, to the professionals to those drama queens and kings predicting an eruption right underneath the Blue Lagoon and boiled tourists (seems they are disappointed it didn't happen). But what a time to be living in, to see the evolution of earth before our eyes, and the Mars landscape at the same, one looking very much like the other. Since the sixties we are the generations that have seen the most amazing advancements and some of the most worrying aspects of our continued further existence.

Another great video and discussion about the possible future paths for the magma and lava with humor sprinkled throughout. One comment about the thermal imaging is that the sensor is measuring an apparent temperature and not necessarily the actual ground temperature. This means that different materials can have different apparent temperatures so black rocks might look different than surrounding moss-covered areas but be about the same temperature.

Those first two minutes were awesome, beautiful! Been wondering about the steam coming from that area for weeks. Even recall spotting lava still coming from the northern most vent in the distance but cams never checked it out to confirm. 360° high drone footage is grand for the big picture. Isn’t that barrier above the power plant the original one? It was a long time in seeing it in perspective to the plant. Scary situation if the lava heads in its direction. Hi Gylfi, amazing footage of the gasses escapign and sulfur deposits. The Graben golfcourse could be the next commercial think: Your handicap could change with any earthquake. For the pipeline I guess the main thread is the pressure of the lava pushing anything in its way. In theory steel melts at higher temperatures as lava but I guess time will tell.

Is it perhaps technically, and physically possible to dig out deep ditches on the inside of the current berms, leading the magma the safest places to go, and to use the material they have dug out to make berms on the other side of the ditch? Sort of a river bank channel effect.

Thanks again Gylfi. Your narration is great just like your footage. Edutainment at it's finest. 🙂 I keep in mind, chunks of contenent _might_ spin(coriolis) just like large weatherpatterns do. That is in addition to any slip and/or seperation at the plate edges. (Similar to Juan DeFucha plate on North American continental west coast(Washington state))

Eruption could start at any moment. I know you just came from a long tour, but if you want footage of the eruption, especially from near the start, I'd head back as soon as you can. Maybe take some camping gear along?

If the mid-atlantic ridge has separated slightly then the next eruption could be north east or south west (or both???). There was a earthqauke storm a few kms off shore last week and I was wondering if we were getting a new volcanic island. Part of me thinks that our "Rock stars" should be adding some more seismometers on the penisula and trying to get a 3d map of the underground systems using quakes and their echoes. Might take some of the guesswork out of it.

As iv'e mentioned before, I'm not the expert but when you mention 3D mapping I'm extremely surprised if all available technology hasn't been used already because again and again we see we didn't learn anything from the previous events.

@@JustIcelandic If it hasnt been used then it will be due to lack of money. Some years ago, El Hiero in the Canary Islands was having some wild volcanic activity (undersea eruption just off shore) and the Spanish authorities had a very interesting 3D map of where all the quakes had occurred. It was very easy to make out where the magma chambers were, which was feeding which and where some of the potential routes to the surface might be happening. I just havent seen an equivalent for the Reykjanes peninsular.

It is not 10% but just over 8% of the population that would be at risk of loss of power. Anyway, so much for the cold statistics. Again, thank you for another beutiful video and your wonderful humour👍😁

Is there any questioning in Iceland about the location of the power plant, or would that be too harsh with benefit of hindsight?
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic 4 ай бұрын
This is a good question but at the time it was built, the peninsula had been dormant for almost 800 years so this wasn't considered to be a threat, although it was clear it would wake up again. What bothers me is however how they situated the main facilities in a depression, thats the main mistake, and the land there still sinking there due to the usage of the water under there. They could have done a better job, there are hills nearby and all it took was a bit longer pipelines so this could have been prevented

@@JustIcelandic If I'm not mistaken, Þorvaldur Þorðarson said a while ago that these powerplants earn back the investment within 10 years or so. In that sense, having to build a new one after about 10 years is not even too bad financially - so to some extent they can just take some risks of loosing the plants - but of course what does give huge problems is if a power plant is taken down by lava or whatever without a replacement having built yet!

If lava floods the steam pipe... why not flood it with cold water instead of steam to carry away the heat? That project would require some infrastructure, waste gates and input manifolds, but such a system would cool overtopping lava enough (if it's deep enough) to make a solid stone shield around the pipeline.

3:15 What's to stop lava from erupting again at the fissure south of the defence wall, like it did on 14 January? That alone would be enough for me to no longer feel safe remaining in Grindavik.

I wonder about the sense of not having the wall built over the roadways with a ramp on each side for the traffic to use rather than hoping they can close the gap in time when the next eruption happens, but what do I know, I'm not an engineer.
