The way I like to think about it is: If the object is accelerating in the direction of tension: T > mg so T = mg + ma If the object is accelerating in the opposite direction of tension: T < mg so T = mg - ma

Fnet = ma. Fnet = T - mg (if upwards is taken as positve). Therefore, T - mg = ma.

excellent! also my tip is that if acceleration is involved, I don't sum the forces to zero, I equate it to =ma which works because the 2nd law of motions states that if object accelerates, F is not = 0, instead it's =ma

same way mv^2/r is a resultant for ma is also a resultant force, tension is acting opposite to the weight to T - mg = ma which can be rearranged into the equation, I find that to be easier to understand

*What if a body is tied with rope on its right side and Lying on the Table. Then also tension actually acts towards the right side of the block* ?

Great video, but I’m a bit confused with some stuff at the end. If the lift is accelerating upwards, shouldn’t the forces acting up be bigger than the forces acting down, so shouldn’t it be T+ ma = mg

It’s supposed to be Fnet= T-mg ma= T -mg T = ma + mg
@ScienceShorts
@ScienceShorts 5 жыл бұрын
No. Remember, mg in your equation isn't weight, but rather the force needed to balance weight. All of these forces are pulling upwards.

Thanks a ton for the video but I was wondering about sth, why did we assume that the m, mass, used in calculation of the elevator weight is same as mass of the extra force to accelerate?
@xinrui7010
@xinrui7010 2 жыл бұрын
i think since the tension is kinda like pulling up the whole lift as acceleration meant that the lift is moving so the extra force needed to pull up the whole lift would naturally be the weight of the lift. I could be wrong but that's just my assumption.

What happens to the tension if the lift is decellerating upwards (T acts up, decelleration acts up and mg acts down). Is it just the same as the second half of the video
@ScienceShorts
@ScienceShorts 7 жыл бұрын
If it's moving upwards but decelerating, that means T has to be less than mg.
@joannaev8602
@joannaev8602 6 жыл бұрын
If it is deccelerating upwards, it's accelerating downwarss, so the same as the second half if the video. 😁
