However, China's tactic of building new islands and general Chinese controversy has caused the issue to bubble over recently. In this video, we explain the historic issues, what China wants and why this suddenly became an even bigger issue.

There's no need for violence. We live in a modern society now. I believe we can share these islands. Divide them among the 6 countries. Now they can all drill for oil. But oil will be obsolete in a few years. We have new technology for solar power and electric cars. No need for gas or petro anymore. Clean energy.

I've seen people defending China's claim basically by saying "it's called the South _China_ Sea! It's ours!". On that basis, the tiny state of Melaka - not the country of Malaysia; just its one state - would be entitled to the entire length of the Strait of Malacca, which would be silly, wouldn't it?

The problem with the Philippine claim though is that the 1898 treaty of Paris after the Philippine-Spanish-American war basically defined and limit the Philippine Territory when Spain ceded the Philippines to America 🤷‍♂️ The marked lines mean that we really only have a claim on Scarborough Shoal and nothing in the Spratly islands. Though this treaty really wasn’t fair as the treaty involved only Spain and America without any of the initial Filipino revolutionaries (Rizal, Bonifacio etc...) having any delegates in the treaty and basically silencing them 🤔😒

China has claims on Philippine islands - supposedly dating from hundreds of years ago. Yet, the oldest world map designed by a Chinese man is at the Biblioteca Ambrosia in Milan Italy. It dates from the mid 1600's. It was designed under the tutelage of Matteo Ricci, because European map-makers were way ahead of Chinese. Early Chinese maps of what's now 'The S. China Sea' don't even show Philippine islands. It's proof that, while Europeans were traveling and charting the world, China was stuck in its myopic region, with little awareness of what was going on, geographically, nearby.

Thanks for making a detailed video explaining the context of the maritime dispute as well as UNCLOS and the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016, that China’s historical claims have no legal basis. The militarized Chinese artificial islands poses a significant national security threat to countries like Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines as they are so close to the major cities of Manila, Ho Chi Minh, etc. While I hope these countries can resolve the dispute in a peaceful manner, it would also be somewhat foolish to assume China would willingly surrender these militarized islands. ASEAN as well is having a hard time taking a tough and united stance against China as its statements and actions must have consensus among all its 10 members states. It would be incredibly disadvantageous for countries to bilaterally negotiate with China as the latter has a clear military and economic advantage which would be prejudicial to any impartial agreement. Simply put: “You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth”. Thanks again for making such a video, I hope this allows more people to be aware of this issue and for the international community to take stance.

If there is enough political will, ASEAN can actually band together as a single third bloc, rather than having to choose to either side with China or the US. ASEAN can also start calling that sea as "South East Asia Sea" instead of "South CHINA Sea", to lessen China's claim of the sea. This would be similar to the naming convention of the sea between China and Japan, where Japan calls it "Sea of Japan", while China calls it "East Sea".

Even if someone wins, all the nations will accuse each other of cheating, while claiming fair play for themself and the conflict will pursue. @Brad Sanchez no, it was part of Vietnam ancient, the Nguyen dynasty. Coming to the throne in 1802, King Gia Long, though busy with royal affairs, never neglected the mission of protecting and establishing the control over sea and island regions handed down by his forefathers. It is widely known that under the Nguyen Lords’ rule, Hoang Sa and Bac Hai flotillas were set up with crew members largely from Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces. Under the reign of the Nguyen Kings, Hoang Sa flotilla was maintained to patrol and control the sea and island regions on behalf of the royal court. Historical documents reveal that all the Nguyen Kings considered Hoang Sa flotilla a vanguard and unique force to enforce the monarchical management of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes. In 1815, King Gia Long ordered Hoang Sa flotilla, under the command of Pham Quang Anh (a resident of Ly Son island, Quang Ngai province), to cross the sea to Hoang Sa “for the exploration of sea routes.” King Minh Mang, who succeeded King Gia Long and ruled the country from 1820 to 1841, continued with the management, patrol and control of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa regions in a more comprehensive and profound manner. According to historical documents, the King organized and sent troops for exploration, management and patrol of sea and island regions through various activities, from map drawing to sovereignty marker planting, temple building, tree planting, etc., as signs of recognition.

Which bit is misinformation? All the facts stated here are international public knowledge. TLDR isn't exposing some wild conspiracy theory with unverifiable claims. TLDR don't even express an opinion on the subject, they only talk about the (publicly stated) opinions of the powers involved: China thinks it has a historical claim to almost the entire South China Sea. Pompeo thinks China's claims to the South China Sea are unlawful. Again, all publicly available knowledge. Or perhaps not so publicly available within mainland China..? I think you meant to comment "Find another source, this informative video contradicts my preferred narrative."

@@danleblanc01 It's been a while so I can only remember a few points he didn't make it right (not sure he did that on purpose) 1. He never mentioned that the 11-dash line was drawn by the Republic of China (which is Taiwan) government in the 40s, he just made it seem like the mainland Chinese government did it. 2. He mentioned that three years after 1995, China broke the peace by doing constructions on the islands. Instead, Vietnam has been constructing the islands for several decades. Maybe they are still doing this little by little. He just made it sound it was all China. These are things that can influence people's thinking quietly, so be vigilant.
@danleblanc01
@danleblanc01 3 жыл бұрын
@@jifa17 1. Your claim that modern day Taiwan was in any way an introducer of the Eleven Dash Line in the 1940s is rubbish. It was the Republic of China- meaning the mainland Chinese government at the time -that first put the line on their maps and staked claim to almost the entire sea. If you haven't noticed the difference between 1940 RoC and 2020 RoC, I think you've missed a pretty massive plot point in the history of those countries. 2. Yes Vietnam was expanding SCS islands before China did in '98. No they didn't break the peace by doing it - as said in the video, the ASEAN agreement only banned *military* construction specifically. Vietnam built only on the islands physically closest to their shores, with no military infrastructure or equipment. Contrast their 120 acres of new land dredged up from the sea with China's almost 3,000 acres, far distant from Chinese shores and laden with anti-aircraft guns and rocket systems that break the ASEAN agreement with impunity. And you accuse TLDR of spreading misinformation? You criticise them for skipping important details..? Perhaps you should be more vigilant. I'm gonna need to hear some significantly more accurate and contextual claims before I ever give the PRC government the benefit of the doubt on anything.

FALSE!! For your claim that no one including china cared/claimed about the islands until the 20th century. The Philippines under Spanish rule has claimed islands and rocks in the sea since 1774. There are maps made during that period that includes, Scarborough Shoal and rocks (which are under UN maritime laws can be territories of countries) in the Spratly islands as part of Spanish colony the Philippines. This constitutes a LEGAL CLAIM TO THE TERRITORIES IN THE SPRATLY ISLANDS BY THE PHILIPPINES.

Our Philippine government (2010-2016) was the one who filed that UNCLOS case that resulted in the declaration that the nine-dash line was invalid. Unfortunately when the ruling was released, we just had an election that installed a pro-China president. He basically ignored the ruling. Our Philippine fishermen still cannot fish (or have a difficult time fishing) in our very own Exclusive Economic Zone. By the way, election meddling via black propaganda of social media trolls first occurred during our May 2016 election. A few months ahead of the US. Same Cambridge Analytica guys. The ancient history prove that the sea which is now called South China Sea has been navigated by the early seafarers coming from the West, East and Southern part of the sea. It shouldn't be claim unilaterally by China as its territory. Also China cannot support their claim of the sea by stating that it's their traditional fishing grounds. The ASEAN's could have been the first traditional fishermen of this sea because of proximity. Just because it was named SCS it doesn't mean it belongs to China. It was only the early Portuguese explorers navigating the sea that named it South China Sea to differentiate it from other bodies of water. No country should claim this sea unilaterally because it is shared by many countries in the region to which they enjoy the freedom of navigation with their trade throughout history. The 9-claim of China has no legal and historical basis according to the Arbitral Tribunal in the Hague.

Mainland China, "People Republic of China", only formed on 1 Oct 1949, by claiming administration through civil war. To supplement, the remaining 2 dash lines are not claimed anymore in favour of comradeship between PRC and Vietnam.

It is widely known that under the Nguyen Lords’ rule, Hoang Sa and Bac Hai flotillas were set up with crew members largely from Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces. Under the reign of the Nguyen Kings, the Hoang Sa flotilla was maintained to patrol and control the sea and island regions on behalf of the royal court. Historical documents reveal that all the Nguyen Kings considered Hoang Sa flotilla a vanguard and unique force to enforce the monarchical management of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes. In 1815, King Gia Long ordered the Hoang Sa flotilla, under the command of Pham Quang Anh (a resident of Ly Son island, Quang Ngai province), to cross the sea to Hoang Sa “for the exploration of sea routes.” Not only until 1948 did they star to draw some random line on our sea and some other countries sea and calm that it belongs to them.

@@richardhill8786 Who is slant.? You don,t want to wind back to 500BC ,, how about1700 AD. I can see you have an agenda :-- Excerpt: "A group of Uyghurs from Xinjiang set up the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) some time back. On 11 September 2002, the United Nations classified ETIM as a terror organisation and an associate of Al Qaeda. ETIM has been active in China for many years, notably in Xinjiang, home of the Uyghurs. They have killed hundreds of people, mostly in Xinjiang. Then, in 2016, the Chinese government acted strongly on the ETIM members, arresting almost 13,000 of them and putting them in rehabilitation centers. At the same time, the Chinese government took other steps, such as increasing surveillance of Xinjiang in order to stop any further terror strikes by ETIM. Southern Xinjiang is now full of surveillance cameras and road blocks. but there has been no more terror attacks since 2016 and the people there are safe and happy now. Most people in Southern Xinjiang only have a primary school education plus some religious (Islam) education. As a result of their low level of education, many of them cannot get jobs. This is a dangerous situation because with their low level of education, little knowledge of Islam and hardly any income, they can easily be misled into joining ETIM. To overcome this, since 2017, China has made secondary education compulsory (and free) to the youngsters in Southern Xinjiang. In addition to that, young adults are given vocational training so that they have enough skills to secure a job and an income. China even helps them to find a job upon completion of their vocational training. The US is not happy with what China has done. The US fears China’s economic rise, and will do anything possible to stop China from being the no 1 economy in the world. China overtook the US in GDP PPP since 2014. According to the IMF, World Bank, PWC and others, China's GDP (nominal) will exceed the US within 10 years. By 2050, China would have exceeded the US in many fields, to become the dominant superpower in the world, replacing the US. China currently has 8 STEM graduates to every STEM graduate that the US has. In 10 years time, the ratio is expected to be 15:1. With more money and more capable researchers, China will overtake the US in many fields, including weapon systems. By 2050, China will be the dominant superpower of the world. President Xi has said that the US will harrass China until 2049, when China would have overtaken the US in many areas. The US will do whatever it takes to stop China, including turning Xinjiang into another Syria, if possible. The US would like to see Xinjiang in turmoil. The US is home to an Uyghur separatist group. There is even an East Turkestan Government-in-exile in the US, located in Virginia. The US would be happy if these separatist groups could take over Xinjiang and turn it into an independent country that is under US control. This would enable the US to cut off China’s access to Central Asia, Russia and Europe and considerably slow down China’s economic growth. For this reason, it is not surprising that the US has created all sorts of fake accusations against China. It is an attempt to turn the world opinion against China. If this objective is achieved, then it may be possible to get the WTO to expel China on the grounds of human rights violation. This will put a stop to China’s high economic growth rate. ◾It is not true that the surveillance system in Xinjiang is aimed against the public. ◾It is not true that 1 million (now increased to 2 million, it seems) Uyghurs are in concentration camps (or whatever camps). ◾It is not true that China is harvesting organs from the Uyghurs ◾It is not true that there are Chinese officers or police or whatever in Uyghur homes. ◾It is not true that Uyghurs are prevented from praying or fasting. ◾and there are many more fake accusations. Believing the fake US accusations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with 56 Islamic member countries, wrote a very negative report of China’s human rights actions against the Muslim Uyghurs, in December 2018. Then, in March 2019, after a visit to Xinjiang, the OIC wrote the following: “The Council welcomes the outcomes of the visit conducted by the General Secretariat’s delegation upon invitation from the People’s Republic of China; commends the efforts of the People’s Republic of China in providing care to its Muslim citizens; and looks forward to further cooperation between the OIC and the People’s Republic of China.”

But when we go back to history those should be free island and humanity can use it for commerce.. but during the 1800s we don,t have the information and media as speedy as today, On the other Hand Singapore have manage the tiny island state that is it an icon for humanity to consider that we need to throw all politician to the shark and and re-engineer the planet resources.
