Luxurious campsite, gourmet meal, gorgeous scenic views. If it hadn’t been for the -16c temperature I suspect Marty may have considered this glam-camping. I enjoyed the video immensely and looks like you guys had a great time despite the elements and icy conditions. Thanks for taking us along!

Thanks Brad. I certainly prefer more primitive hiking, but I need to make some compromises for winter. In winter I can't travel as far each day, so this trail was ideal for that. In winter every activity takes longer, and we have less daylight to accomplish what we need to. So not having to shovel a sitting area, not having to spend 30 minutes collecting wood, etc. is all helpful. This is a great area for another reason. The roads that lead to both trailheads of this hike are closed after December 1st, until summer. These sites are super popular in summer, so now is the perfect time to experience them alone. Cheers.

Awesome vid Marty! Lobster and risotto on day two of a winter trek, Damn! talk about kicking it up a notch! Awesome prep on Chef Evan's end, the improvised cooking methods i.e. the double boiler coffee cupcakes, and how you both collaborate to fine tune these adaptations, all in extreme conditions no less. Winter camping is a totally different ballgame. I look forward to see what's next on the menu and where the next "dining room" will be! Again, as a kitchen dude and hiker of 26 years, I thoroughly enjoy these videos. Thanks for sharing and for inspiring. Needed a kick in the arse to get out there this is just what I needed to see. Heading out Sunday...somewhere! Also thank you both for sharing a moment to honour our fallen soldiers and vets, past and present. LaPorte Texas, yep use to live there. I watch your videos to think of being cooler away from this hot humid Texas heat. I have been to Banif and Lake Louise. Gods country you are so lucky. I am learning how to stay warm in our 30F winters in East Texas.

Cheers from Alberta. I started my career working for a company called Amoco, so I spent a lot of time in your fine state. I'd love to hike there, but someone will first have to teach me about snakes and other nasty critters. Personally I prefer the cold over the heat.

@adamgregory62175 жыл бұрын
Martyupnorth yes it was renovated at the start of the year. I tried to go there at the start of the season but parks told me it was closed as they were re doing it. It’s really nice. The tent pads are all new. The toilet is amazing for backcountry 😊. And we sat at the same fire pit as you did.

Nice job with the food. We use collapsable silicon mugs to steam bake all the time... red lobster biscuit mix is great with your chilli in the bush. Also instead of rocks just cut a part an old disposable pie plate or tin roaster pan. It will fold flat in the bottom of your pot and then just re fold it back in to some kind of square to sit your silicon on.

Ah! been waiting for this adventure to come out! Awesome. I was there at both Elbow Lake and Tombstone for a few nights in late August. You’re right, it’s stunning but was extremely busy and noisy. Hey Marty! This is Shep in Arizona, I corresponded with you briefly a few years ago... I've decided to come back to Alberta, perhaps next year. I did a little camping up by Upper Kananaskis Lake in 2017 but watching this video has lit a fire under me to return to the Canadian Rockies. Maybe even bring my kayak with me and find a vacation rental to use as a home base. I'm going to look into finding knowledgeable local hikers and campers to hang out with to show me the sights. Any recommendations of who to check out or where to go to? With a guy like Evan along, you eat much better in the woods than I do in the best of conditions! Jealous!
@Martyupnorth5 жыл бұрын
I'm semi-retired, so I hike a lot these days. Give me a shout when you're finally here. In the mean-time, join a FaceBook community page called Backpacking in the Canadian Rockies. You'll meet lots of like-minded individuals, who are mostly local to Alberta.

Loved this video Marty! Wow the first night must have been tough but you both are champs! I usually only camp in the summer times here in Alberta but I might give winter camping a try on a warm weekend though lol. Evan seems like an amazing chef and great guy! Those meals looks awesome, am sure you guys really enjoyed it! Also your bright light was really clear, could see very clear through the lens at night! Can you explain what you mean by the bigfoot rocks? Always though bigfoot is some kind of conspiracy theory. Thanks a lot for sharing Marty, look forward to your next video!!

I'mm headed out for a winter backpack in a few days myself, was wondering, I thought I saw your candle set up, did you use it the first night? Any idea how effective it was?
@Martyupnorth5 жыл бұрын
I did not use it. I was fine with my two sleeping bags. I have used it in the past, and it is remarkably effective at taking out the chill, but not enough to keep warm. It also causes a lot of condensation.
Thanks Marty, I’ll likely bring mine along but not sure if I will use it, the condensation might not be worth it. Shouldn’t be quite as cold as your first night.
