"Our new song covenant is about staying faithful to the promise that you make to
your spouse. My wife and I have been married for 10 years now- 10 glorious years. We have four daughters. Yes I have four girls, and having four girls is wonderful. It just means someone's always crying, and it's usually me. No, I'm not praying for a boy. I find that the Lord gives girls to a family that already has a man.
In that 10 years of marriage my wife and I have encountered our fair share of surprises - some good, some not so good
One of those not-so-good surprises is, pretty early on we were confounded when we realized that we were still able to be attracted to other people, which really blew my mind, because when I imagine getting married, I imagine my wife flying in on a white horse from heaven and totally completing me. So, when I still
found my desire for her lacking, it really threw me.
Some of you it's throwing you right now, me saying this. Some of you have never been married or maybe you just got married, and you're leaning forward in your chair going “This guy's speaking heresy. No, I'd be on my full-name - I'll never be attracted to
anyone else. You're crazy town.”
Those of you that have been married for a considerable amount of time might be chuckling to yourself, leaning back in your chair going, “yeah, of course”. I know this sounds crazy, but to avoid setting yourself up for failure in marriage, you need to realize that the propensity to be attracted to someone else is always gonna be there.
Now, let me explain why I think that's beautiful. That's beautiful because it means now your choice actually means something, right? Like if you made your vows standing in front of the altar, “I'm gonna promise to love you forever”, but there was never going to be the possibility that you would ever be attracted to anyone, then that promise is superfluous; it's meaningless. Why make it? You don't need it!
I've found over 10 years of marriage that my feelings needed truth to wrap around. Which is very different than what our culture said. Our culture says, “hey, listen this is what you feel and truth needs to wrap around you”. That's not what marriage was meant to be. See, marriage was not meant to just make us happy, like, whatever I'm feeling marriage is supposed to make me feel that. Marriage is supposed to expand you, not fulfill you. See, it expands what your life is about. Ephesians 5 puts it this way, it says: “when you marry each other, and you stay committed to each other in a in a loving, serving way, you actually reflect a mystery greater than yourself”.
When I choose my wife, even though I could go run and find feelings somewhere else, it magnifies the way Christ loves the church, who, although He's given plenty of reason to walk out on us, He says: “I will be faithful even when she is faithless.”
This actually helps me understand why in the Old Testament, God says, “I hate divorce” He's not trying to get down on divorce, people saying, “how dare you dirty sinner!”. No, He's saying, “hey guys, I just want you to know that I hate that. I would never divorce my people”.
So, this gives me like new inspiration.Oh, there's a bigger reason to stay married to my wife than just whether or not I'm feeling it. When I stay together with her, and I keep serving her, and I keep loving her even when my feelings are doing this, when they're fluctuating, I give Testament to the greater mystery - that Christ will never walk out on me. So, young couples, old couples, recently married, been married a long time, I hope this just reinvigorates why we keep this promise, because this thing - this covenant - it's bigger than you."

Mike Donehey, I've been married for over 23 years, and I have to back up what you have said 100%. Marriage is the bringing together of two people who compliment and expand upon one another. If someone is looking for a person to complete them, they will find themselves disappointed down the road as both individuals change and grow. I really love your teaching videos, so...please...keep on making them to keep us all learning and growing. As I always like to say, "If you're not learning, you're not living." Every day, we have to keep learning more about the wondrous God who shows us such love and grace; just as we learn more about our spouse's love and grace. The learning will always breath new meaning of love and grace in our lives...moving us forward together with our spouse, and together with our Heavenly Father. It makes life all the more worth living.

Wow! Why isn’t this covered in premarital counseling? My husband and I have been married for 26 years this past April. We had the premarital counseling, excuse my French it sucked. It was poor, weak, surface, it covered the obvious, arguing, finances, yadda yadda yadda. Yes this was Christian counseling. Your Covenant message needs to be added to Family Life’s Weekend to Remember! If this was talked about and taught to couples before marriage, how many divorces would this prevent? I love how you say marriage should expand you not fulfill you. You can’t find fulfillment in anything earthly. Only God can truly fulfill us. When He is invited into our lives, our jobs our relationships, our marriage, then He can fulfill those areas expanding our lives. Are you sure you’re not supposed to teach somewhere? Is there a church calling you? God bless you and your family.

Hi Mike, You have some good points. Let’s start with the simple. Let’s ask those questions that you were asked about your wife when you were married. When did you two ___________? What does a person do only a daily basis? For everything we do there is a consequence or result. Examples: You comb your hair. Why? You wash your hands. Why? Take a day, and write down everything, everything that you do. Take a day, and read when these things are first mentioned in the Bible. Mike, there are witnesses in heaven helping you through this. Trust me. Trust God. My wife wants me to help you indirectly. Maybe you and Kyle could get together and work through this.

Marriage is supposed to make you holy, not happy.
@kathierouse5306
@kathierouse5306 6 жыл бұрын
sportstertaco I think I understand what you're trying to say. According to the scriptures, the husband and wife are to sanctify one another. What does "sanctify" mean? Strong's Concordance says, "set apart, make holy; this can mean active dedication and service to God or the act of regarding or honoring as holy." My point is this: if the couple is committed to the sanctification, the byproduct will be happiness or joy, if you prefer. It all depends on the goal. I would hope that you would want the couple to have a happy marriage, don't you? If they're not happy, then God is not pleased. Take a look at Song of Songs. Do you see happiness as well as holiness? If not, I'm sorry I can't help you. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

September 11, 2018 Temptation is temptation whether you are married or not. Your sin affects your spouse when you are married; “FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.” [Ephesians 5:31] For those of us in Christ Jesus we are all married to Him; not one of us is single, but we can be un-wedded. Romans: “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with HIM in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be IN THE LIKENESS of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with HIM, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death is no longer master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin AS instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members AS instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” [Romans 6:1-14] Die to your self and live in Christ Jesus. Amen.
