Mircea Simon (born January 22, 1954) is a retired Romanian heavyweight boxer. He took up boxing in 1971 at Dinamo Bucharest, coached by Constantin Nour, and won a silver medal at the 1976 Olympics, losing to Teófilo Stevenson in the final. In 1978 he fled to the United States, where in 1978-1979 he fought 14 bouts as a professional with a record of 12 wins and two draws.

Mircea Simon defected from the Romanian Boxing Team in 1978 while they were in Lake Tahoe, he turned pro & was managed & trained by Jackie McCoy. Mircea pro record finished at 12-0-2 with 10 ko's.

@@notme3988 If I remember right Simon was also a accomplished photographer, maybe he didn't have his heart in boxing 100%. He might have taken up boxing to have a somewhat better life style in Romania as it was kind of a " state job " in most communist countries. Life in Romania was very bleak during that time period, communist ruler Nicolae Ceausescu imposed severe economic reforms to repay debt to IMF & World Bank which impoverished the population.

@@Economy872 ...many reasons .Mircea Simon was very arogant , born in Bukarest.All other boxer was from poor vilage from poor family" Childrens " from Ceausescu .Fidel Castro was a big boxing fan and realy good frend from Stevenson . My opinien it' s clear : the corner was happy to have " oportunity". A present from Ceausescu for his best frend Fidel ! P. S.Simon doesn' t came back to Romania.

Stevenson should have emigrated to the US after this fight, trained with good coaches and as a sparring fighter before turning professional. 3 round fights aren't enough.
