Wow. I just love the way you use color. I mean it seems so rare to see people making urban sketches so vibrant. And your lack of fear, you just go in with it and it comes out the way it comes out and you don't seem concerned with color blending being what you might nit have anticipated. I love your style and you give me inspiration for urban sketching like this. I know your preference for watercolor is Sennelier so I suspect that's the kind you were using? It's not paint that I can afford but I really do lobe the way your paintings turn out. The way you use color for shadows and not greys or browns. I have moved away from urban sketching simply because they call for earth tones that I don't find appealing. So the whole reason I wanted to watch this was because your thumbnail was so bold and vibrant. Thank you so much for sharing your art with us. It truly is beautiful.

Colour palette is very personal. My style is very stylized so colours are more vibrant. There are artists who use more neutrals, or earth tones. You can use any colours you like as long as it works for you

I have switched from Arches to Baohong Artist grade and I love Baohong. It performs just as well as Arches, lifts beautifully (better than Arches) and most importantly, it’s so much cheaper too! I use the back of the Baohong CP when doing line and wash or if I want a smoother surface but with less grain. Next on my shopping list is the HP paper, once I’ve depleted my Arches HP. Baohong all the way!👍

Baohong is my go-to paper! There's a "masters choice" range here in Australia and the value for money and performance is fabulous. Bonus of not feeling precious about 'wasting' paper since it's so much more affordable than other brands

Thank you for your great review. I just tried baohong academy cold pressed not so long ago and it's so good. My favourite is still baohong academy rough surface. More good thing from baohong paper is, it doesn't lost the sizing easily. And it's so comfortable to soften the edges without obvious cauliflower effect. It really helps any beginner (like me) to build the confidence.

Great to see you review this. I love Baohong paper. I ordered their small paper sampler, and the sheets all felt great to work on. My personal favorite is the artist grade regular cold press, but as a teacher, I love that they have a less expensive student grade paper too that is still such good quality, which makes good supplies more accessible for students. To me, the artist grade is one of the best feeling papers I have ever painted on (right along with Etchr’s grey cover “perfect sketchbook”), and I can get so many varying textures out of it. The paint goes down on it in such a rich, velvety way. I definitely like Arches a lot, but having used both a fair bit now, I like the feel of Baohong even just a little bit more. 🤭

This is the most comprehensive review of these 2 papers and it was awesome!!! Loved how you showed it up close to see the texture and especially to show them against other brands too! I've not been able to afford 100% cotton but have been dying to. And this brand is one I've been looking at for a long time and have on my Amazon wishlist, not sure if anyone knows if it can be bought for an even better price somewhere else, I'd love to know if so. But I wasn't sure about the artist vs student and you answered all those. Thank you so much! Also, because of your gorgeous art I added the Duke d2 fude nib pen to my wishlist and my husband just bought it for me. I'm so excited to try it. I am nothing compared to you and I know there will be a learning curve with it.....but I'm just SO excited!! Thank you for all your advice and helping me with all my questions on your different videos. I truly appreciate it. I think the student grade is better texture wise for me as well when drawing flowers and things then adding watercolor. May try the hot press as well after I save up. Thanks so much!!!

Because I can wait for better paper if its at a better price because, like everyone I think, we've had next to no work through all this and I have some significant health issues that getting more and more expensive with new surgeries coming up soon...teaching myself art is what helps me cope and keep in a positive and inspiring state of mind as much as possible. Which I why I'm SO thankful for everyone on here that shows their beautiful art and different things they love, because more and more I have a day or even hours every now and then when I'm physically able to draw or paint as much as I need it, so its hard, BUT, having this place to see these amazing artists and learn new things from them and all of you that help by sharing awesome info in the comments helps me stay excited and inspired for when I have a good day and can have a few supplies to have so much fun with while I can ;) So thank you so much for the help and suggestions, I truly truly appreciate it!!!! :) I hope you and your family are doing well and enjoy the rest of your weekend!!!! My husband and son got me this name to start a chronic pain/health issues and how art saves me type blog and to video the art i make for this channel...and I'm just too nervous and sure people will hate it all because I try everything I get my hands on...friends or family who give me little paints or pens and just color makes me happy ... but since I can't practice as much I'll never be any good. My family is sweet about it, but I think differently of it...I'm working on it as I am apparently viciously hard on myself in all ways told :/ maybe it could be a "what not to do" one!! Aahahahaha just kidding. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough of feel well enough...but more surgeries coming up so just trying to not focus on the $600 monthly bill just to have insurance because even one step down took away all the specialty doctors that aren't optional for me...plus of course a couple thousand we pay out of pocket till that's done, so, yea, its stressful. My husband tries so hard and I have a lot of guilt over it though he reminds me of the hard on myself thing again :/ but its a lot when there's not much money coming in. So I agree, its hard to deal with both and sadly so many people all over do :/ but...sorry...that was depressing...so sorry! In Australia we don't have either the artist or the student but an Australian company imports something called Baohong Masters choice. I thing it's artist grade buy repackaged. I the mostly use the hot press but sometimes the cold press. Both are excellent, I love the hot press. The blocks are about one third of the price of arches. I’ve noticed the Hot press is like general Cold press and the Cold press is semi-Rough. I prefer hot press for sketchbooks since I’m just adding color to quick Sketches and not pouring water all over the pages. It’s called a Sketchbook for a reason. In house, I prefer Cold press blocks for, well, watercolor, where I’ll be doing washes and using granulating / super granulating paint. The Baohong texture is just right. I highly recommend the paper too & there isn’t noticeable difference between Student & Artist. Great video!

I seem to have a seesawing interest with Baohong watercolor paper. It's surprisingly cheap even for a 100% cotton paper, but it's been said that it has no sizing (presumably why it was cheap), meaning it can be quite unpredictable with absorbing water and pigment. It's why I was reluctant to that at first. That and I already have enough watercolor paper. (Which I haven't painted most of them yet, and could potentially lose their sizing sooner or later. 😅) Last year, I have dabbled on poster paint and gouache, and earlier this year, I got a set of the much hyped Miya Himi jelly gouache. I had painted with these paints even on cardstock and regular print paper, so maybe sizing is less of an issue for me. Vibrancy on the other hand... I don't know if sizing is an issue for gouache for others there, but with your review of the Baohong paper, it has regained my interest in getting it, and recommending it, provided I use up my other papers. Thanks for the review, Mr. Teoh, and have a Merry Christmas!🎄

Hi Teoh! I am looking at your review thinking I must have purchased my Academy B., cold pressed 100% 5x7 block about 3weeks ago from a different company or received a bad batch of ?? cotton, unsized paper. My experience was quite the opposite as the paper dried quickly, which made color blending very difficult. Harsh water lines developed and smoothing them by resetting was impossible. Even when I soaked the paper block with water it buckled and leaked onto the page below, yet there was not change in blending my paints, as the paints still did not moving. My QoR paints which normally disperse extremely well on other WC paper barely dispersed. The company has to have changed paper suppliers as my 5x7 block is a dud!! It gets 1* from me as 0 is not an option. May try it with gouache as it requires less water?!?!…🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️😔

Hi Teoh, thank you for all your informative videos! I've followed you for some time and have learned much from you. I'm sorry to hijack this thread of comments :) but wonder if you might advise me on something: I am not an expert sketcher nor a novice, somewhere in between, and I want to purchase a simple, portable drawing tablet with full screen and good pen, USB charged, and does not require a glove (I want to be able to rest my hand if need be) and preferably priced at $200 or below (if that's possible). I have watched your tablet review videos and read many reviews on Parka Blogs, but I am rather confused about what tablet you would recommend per my specifications above. If you have a moment, I would very much appreciate your recommendation. THANK YOU! :)

The only one that’s near the price range is the Samsung Tab A8 with S Pen but that’s from 2019. Alternative would be those pen displays that need to connect to computers. For US$200 you can get around 12-13 inches. www.parkablogs.com/content/artist-review-samsung-tab-80-s-pen-2019

Good. To know! Is there a way you could do a tutorial on how to approach an urban sketch from a photo? I watch all of your videos but still struggling on where to begin with a photo and proper angles.

Using a photo means the composition is already fixed by the photographer so it's important to choose the right photo. One that shows off the physical form (e.g. silhouette, light shadow) of the subject. Generally speaking, just draw the biggest shape or longest line first. I've many tutorials from the tutorial playlist kzbin.info/aero/PLucoL_7WoAgDD3iul6Me6RIruU_UyhKDO

Curious : I'm from Spain and this is the MORE EXPENSIVE watercolor paper, is no way I'm gonna get it, when any other, including from the best brands, is infinitelly more convenient, reliable, tested, trusty, better quality, I can complain and return it, ... And cheaper ! I suppose it depends on where we live. I made time ago a very simple Excel spreadsheet with price per square meter, to compare offers. Merry Christmas to all of you !

That’s because of EU VAT , tariff and such. It’s to keep business within EU markets. Bare in mind, cotton doesn’t grow in Europe … just saying.

@@UJB123 Well, we have cotton producers in my own province, but the main producer in Europe is Greece. On the other hand, even 100% watercolor papers from USA and other parts of the World outside Europe were cheaper, but I didn't check prices for a while now, so, I can't talk too much about today's market, that was a year ago. Happy painting and, Cheers !

I would have saved a lot of time and frustration if all of the artist-KZbinrs with "how to paint" videos would have just been up front and said, "don't mind watching the rest of this video unless you FIRST spend $400 on a couple new sable brushes, because your paintings will never look this good with any other brushes".

I mean in my opinion, I followed those videos and did decently with my cheaper materials. I have affordable Royal & Langnickel brushes, they worked great. (Maybe spent $11?) My paint was really bad quality but I didn't know that as a beginner haha. It all comes down to good WC paper, and as long as your brushes don't shed extremely, the cheaper options can be good.

@@krabfingers8473 I hear you, I guess my frustration is that a lot of KZbin painters use high-end paper plus real sable brushes, but don't bother to say that you can't closely mimic the painting with other materials. I had to learn it the hard way. Even the same artist can do two paintings side by side, one with student grade one with artists grade and you'll see a clear difference, but again they NEVER mention this in their tutorial videos.

@@davepane7306 Yeah I agree with you on that! I didn’t know the materials could’ve changed the painting outcome drastically. I mean now I know, sadly can’t afford most of the expensive supplies still.

@@davepane7306 my art tutor always say, you controll tge media, it's the hand behind it, not the tools. So he always teach with cheap materials. However he does suggest to buy artist paints because they aee directly applied as the art itself. Papers and brushes can be whatever. For me personally, I love Baohong artist and have used them for a year now. I have other papers like potentate, canson, leyton, for collections and practices but I love Baohong artist the most. I do not use archea or saunders because tooo expensive. With Baohong artist, i can get good quality cotton paper without burning my wallet.
