Now this video kind of bring me back to my art class studying in Singapore. Our teachers often encourage us to use cheaper watercolor like the pentel or sakura but often times we have to buy the higher end watercolour like the W&N Cottman and also their brushes are some of the best back when they are not made in China. Still using my brush I bought in year 1994 and they are still great.

I’ve been using a Cotman travel palette for my plein air painting and find the colors are just what I want. Most all of my work is outdoors, in a semi-arid part of the country. I do not want/need very intense color in that my countrysides are more earthy. Cotman fits my budget too. W-N and D-S are often too pricey for my expertise. I still love your videos because I learn something new most everyone time I watch one. Thanks for the help.

I also have the pocket box and love it. I started out with Pentel tubes then jumped to W&N Cotman and now I'm using W&N Artist only. Itis true I've never used others yet so far I'm delighted and in no hurry to look out for other brands. They dissolve easily, superb transparency and pigment concentration is always on point. Something I could mention is you can noticeably feel the great ease while working with them, they work marvels for you when combined with good quality paper. Great review, amigo. -A

Thanks so much Teoh! I am ready to step up from student grade paints, and trying to spend the money wisely. I like that the WN is available at the art supply stores and so many others you have to order online. That is a plus for WN. I have seen many artist go for the super expensive paints, like the m.grahams or the sennelier. I have seen many of your comparison videos and you also like Daniel Smith paints. I'm going to buy the WN ones and start there. I trust you, you do great work and are very experienced. Thanks Teoh!

I have the 24 half pan generic box with logo bought in 2014 and made in France and which were marketed then as artists colours. I like them better now than when I first bought them; once you have got through the top layer of paint they work beautifully. I think this might be typical of extruded paint. I am not sure about the newer Chinese made ones. I believe the French version were made by a very good historic paint company. I would give my eye teeth for the box you have but can only find the huge one or the tiny one. The one you have is now rare as hens teeth! I have added about 8 colours to the box at the ends and in the middle. Only one colour is not good, and that is aureolin, which has visibly changed colour in the box. I bought an identical looking Cotman box, slightly different logo in 2016, it is far inferior to the tiny pocket box I have had for around a decade, and I didn't like using them at all unlike the paint in the smaller box which gave great results at the time. The cost of watercolours has just rocketed in four years. Though I paid low prices for all three boxes I have mentioned here from a great seller my Cotman 24 set cost half as much again as I paid for the artists version two years earlier. and now the cheapest professional set costs at least three times that, even when on sale. In four years! Goodness knows how expensive they are in some countries! I think there are other very good options for less these days, that will produce great results. The comparable British company is Daler Rowney, I was gifted an artists quality set of these and find them excellent, they are half pans, not the tube colours which some dislike. They are still made in the UK afaik.

I like the WN cotman, pretty good for me - I also use Grumbacher artist tubes. I am torn between liking pans verses tubes in pans, I had to take some time to appreciate both. I like that I can buy the cotman paints cheaper. I don't like being an artist on a budget, but I can do some great work using the cotman. And most people viewing the art don't know the difference unless they are also experts. Your videos, like always are my favorites to watch before I buy - thank you, Teoh.

You need more paint from Cotman to get the same level of intensity of WN Professional. This means you're likely to use up Cotman paints faster, at least for selected colours that are weaker.

Defintely no longer the company we knew. No longer british high quality colours. No more commitment to the arts. They moved from UK to France in 2011 and fired 200 long time employees in UK. Just to make Big money by selling Winsor and Newton factory in Harrow to real estate companies. Product portfolio has been drastically reduced. Terrible loss of knowledge, craftmanship and quality. Colours are now made in France and China (!!) In cheap plastic colour palettes. Now just another anonyme global company, called Colart. Nothing genuine. Based on this latest change in manufacturing colours, products are completely overpriced. I use now Schmincke colours. A family owned manufacturer based in Germany. Highly commited to provide the best colours for more than 100 years. They offer an excellent range and quality of colours.

As a beginner my question is how much of each color--proportion wise-do you mix for your color chart. It would seem to me that that would be very important in your results. thanks for a great video I am awaiting the WN Cottman set...I presently have the KOI Field box....thank you Julie
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
I generally mix until the mixture appears to be somewhere in between. Some colours have high tinting strength and only require a tiny bit for mixture. E.g. To get a bright green, you have to use lots of Lemon Yellow with just a tiny bit of Phthalo Blue because Phthalo Blue is such a strong colour.

Hi Teoh, I'm enjoying watching your videos. I think you have sparked an interest in me to paint. I was starting to look at oils but they are not the place to start learning to paint I don't think. So I was stalled because it was so daunting. But watercolours on the other hand look much easier to learn. Your art is wonderful. I am traveling to Hong Kong at the end of the week. While I can buy the Winsor Newton Cotman sets in Australia where I live, they are cheaper in other parts of the world. I've been painting for decades now and I can say confidently that oil painting is way easier to master than watercolour. Watercolour might just be the hardest technique, unless you are sketching as in a pen-n-wash style like Teoh is doing in his sketches. Oil is predictable and with a few guidelines you have to follow it is enough to control the media. Watercolour on the other hand has you relying on the way the water flows on the paper. Of course you can control it but you have to be comfortable with uncertainty to a certain degree. But then watercolour requires less materials, is cleaner, and portable so the appeal is understandable and quite worth it IMO :)

I really like your videos and opinions, I´m an Illustrator, mostly I made digital art, but I love watercolor, I'm from Colombia, so I can relate with the fact, that you don't get many brands easily available, but you definitely can find the Winsor & Newton, only the Cotman are available here in Bogotá, but i find them really good quality, you can get it for around $100.000, and that is really a bummer, because thats like 33 dollars, quite expensive, but that's what you get, is really the best watercolor i can find, here is very common find the pebeo and the reeves in tubes, and many people considers this brands like semi professional.... White Nights have the ambition to be artist grade, so they're nice to paint with. But their pigment selection is oldfashioned. If permanence is an issue for you, you need to handpick your colors. Check out their lightfastness information. www.stpetersburgwatercolours.com/colours.html Every single color in the latest generation Cotman range is made with extremely good, durable, modern pigments. (As is VanGogh). I think White Nights are nicer to paint with (big pans, easily dissolved, strong), but Cotman is far more reliable for the unwary and the finished results look good.

Do you have any problems with tubes being squeezed into pans? I know that the company doesn't recommend it because they say it can develop mildew and mold if you subject to repeated wetting and drying (probably with tap water). Or do you think it's just a marketing technique for them to get people to spend more money.
@teohyc
@teohyc 9 жыл бұрын
+My Panda Paints You should always dry the watercolour paints in the box before keeping them. If you don't, it will develop mold. I have had mold develop before so I always dry my palette boxes properly and keep them in well ventilated areas. Ever since I do that, I no longer have any problems with mold (for years). M Graham tube paints have honey so they stay moist longer and are not as suitable compared to other brands when it comes to squeezing them into pans. Generally speaking, you save a lot of money by getting tubes (15ml) to squeeze into the pans (2ml). I've a video on watercolour tubes vs pans. Watch it at kzbin.info/www/bejne/rX-xfHStdpmDrqs
@mypandapaints5854
@mypandapaints5854 9 жыл бұрын
+Teoh Yi Chie I've seen it and yes. I always dry it out before storing. I don't use much of Winsor and Newton watercolor tubes because they specifically state that their formulation is not made to be dried in pans due to blah blah blah. So I was just asking your experience in their tubes vs pans. W&N reps have stated that their tubes, when dried, will ultimately start to harden more as they get used more and not dissolve completely, they also have a greater risk of mold and mildew due to their formulation. I was just wondering if what the company says holds true to real world use. I personally have noticed that the couple W&N tubes I have tend to release less pigment when rewet than their pan counterpart just like how W&N state they will act. But I mostly use their other mediums (oil paints...) and stick to M. Graham, Daniel Smith, and QoR for WC paints.
@teohyc
@teohyc 9 жыл бұрын
+My Panda Paints The tube paints may be more difficult to rewet when dried in pan. However, it also depends on the pigment. Some pigments will dry into a hard rock (Viridian) and it will be too difficult to use afterwards. Generally speaking, I've not had any problem with my paints getting too hard. I always put a drop or two of water into the pans that I want to use. I find that it softens up the paint slightly, and makes it easier to pick up paint with brush. In fact, I find that those pans in pan sets are the ones that are more difficult to dissolve. Anyway, I've created a video to answer this question that I'll upload in a few days time! Your question gave me the idea to create the video.
@mypandapaints5854
@mypandapaints5854 9 жыл бұрын
+Teoh Yi Chie Yes. I know about the differences in pigments and I usually spray my palette with water depending on the brand. I find I don't need to with M. Graham nor QoR. You can disregard this thread as I think you are thinking I'm asking another question than I actually am. I thought I was coming across clearly so I actually deleted a sentence prior stating, "I'm not talking about the hardness you experience with certain pigments such as Viridian or Raw Umber, I am speaking of a general feel across the entire line." So I will just take your answer to be a simple "No." Which was basically what I was asking. It's funny that W&N are so adamant on NOT squeezing their tubes out to dry in a palette, going as far as to give excuses why.
@teohyc

What kind of paper do you use? Like what brand and grain?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+JayTheBirdFlyZ In this video the paper is Daler Rowney Aquafine 300gsm coldpress. I use that for testing art products because they are cheap. For actual work I want to keep, I use Fabriano Artistico 300gsm coldpress. Here are examples from Fabriano paper www.parkablogs.com/picture/all-my-sketches-melbourne-and-sydney-2015

What paper would be best for watercolor??
@gorway7
@gorway7 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jin, I suggest you take a look at Steve Mitchel's (Mind of Watercolor) post - "SHOWDOWN! Cheap vs Good Quality Watercolor Paper" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHamYWCGh9KqZ5I It took me a long time to accept the truth because I really am a stingy mutt, but the fact is Paper is everything - you can skimp on anything else but not the paper, it's just false economy. Buy a good quality 100% Cotton paper. If not, you will be fighting the cheap paper every step of the way ...and "convince yourself it must be something you are doing wrong" - streaks, back-runs, hard edges or blotchy flat washes. Ironically, experienced painters can sometimes mitigate these problems and still achieve a good painting but for the novice, you'll just be setting yourself up a mountain of unnecessary hurdles. I know pads and blocks are nice and convenient but if you buy loose full imperial sheets, the cost difference is negligible and may work out cheaper per page than buying student grade cellulose paper in pad form. I work on 1/8th sheet size 11" x 7.5" so I cut down a Full sheet of Saunders Waterford which is about £3.45 per sheet here, into 8 sheets, working out about 43 Pence per sheet - If I'm just practising, I can turn it over and use the other side so 21 Pence per side - It just makes no sense buying the cheaper stuff.

I'm just curious are winsor and newton better than van gohg??
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
The company that makes Van Gogh (student grade) also makes the artist quality Rembrandt series. Similarly, Winsor and Newton has both artist and student grade. I should think that their student vs student and artist vs artist should be comparable. Just get whatever that's easier and cost effective for you.

Hi Teoh, Thank you for yet another interesting video. I 'd be interested to see a side by side comparison of W&N Cotman vs artist grade. Would you be able to do that review? Many thanks in andvance!
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+Piefje P Main difference is just their pigment concentration. I personally feel that Cotman loses their vibrancy with mixing a bit faster compared to artist grade. However, they are still quite intense out of the tube. Cotman is good for beginners. There's an artist Holly Exley who uses Cotman paints and her work is amazing hollyexley.blogspot.com

@@budakart The rust will only happen at places where there's no paint. I've many metal palettes and rust is usually not a problem. There are also palettes that use metals that dont' rust. Or just get a plastic palette.

That's the funniest question I've seen in a while. I'm not sponsored by them. I have three t-shirts, red, yellow and green. I like to wear them while making video because they dry my sweat faster especially when it's humid and hot. Sometimes I sweat a lot making videos in the afternoon as it's really hot. As to why you see them so often, it's because I can make three videos on one day wearing the same shirt. On YT, it would seem like I'm wearing them every day. LOL.

It is a shame and sad for the company, but regarding quality of the professional paints I understand the French company are sticking to the same recipes in the paints. (although tube colours are no longer recommended for decanting into pans). I have sets of various ages and many paints from the 80s and 90s as well as newer sets and I haven't noticed any degradation of quality. Some pigments have changed due to availability and often that is true across the various brands. I have no problem with continuing to use W n N....I use many other brands also, so it's not a case that's all I use.
