Those massive grazed hills at 5.47 are eroded completely bare, no topsoil or pasture left. Shocking. That is obviously where a lot of the silt came from. How long is it going to take to fix that?

I got caught in a flood in Country Victoria (Australia) but it was only Rain/River water. No surounding hills to wash away and doesn't occur on hills anyway because of soil density. Not Silt like you poor Blokes. This puts into perspective the differences between both types of flooding. Respect to the people on this Video. Multi generational members of the Land. Their Life!

It’s not just the slash that creates problems. Up here in the Far North it has been the European trees that farmers and life stylers have planted. Trees like willow may look pretty and grow fast, but they are truly obnoxious. We have had four floods on our property already this summer and the bulk of the problem are the willows planted on the farms up stream from us. The trees have no strength, they break easily and regenerate from the smallest twig so easily. During heavy rain they give way and block the streams on lower ground creating blockages in the waterways and considerable flooding. I wish people would cut and and burn the bloody things. These trees need to go on the Noxious Plant list here in NZ. It is too easy to keep blaming forestry for the problems. Farming has a lot to answer for as well. Up here in the Far North it has been primarily the introduced tree species that have been smashed and broken in the wind. We lost every little native bush. The damage in our valley alone due to cyclone damage alone is massive, but not to the scale of the Hawkes Bay.

Why cant the whole country all come and help to clean with our shovels and rakes and what have you. We have available cooks but then I spose you do too. Look we are just gona continue to pray for our people that God will supply all your needs whether financial, mental, physical or spiritual help is needed. God is good, but thru this devastating experience may we all come to a place in our lives to honor God more with our personal lives and put away the things that do not please Him. I believe times like this we need to look inside our hearts and see who we really are and the things we stand for are right. Perhaps God is speaking to us.

Unfortunately bare land causes flooding and mud flooding. Obviously native forests are great for soaking up heavy rain but not very productive. Building houses on flood plans is risky. Stilt houses should be standard practice.

They are currently cutting down the trees on the hills above me in Waikato and leaving a mess… there is a stream below and I’m on the other side a couple of meters above… I dread to think if we have another weather event like that… my house will be a goner. Thank you for asking. The answer is, a lot are not coping. Up here in the Far North, some of our neighbours have had considerable damage from the cyclone. It is going to take years for some to even repair the damage to their properties. Unfortunately in a region where the average income means insurance is not an option, people don’t have the money to pay for repairs. Nor do a lot of people know about the options available to claim for storm damage. In our area a lot of people don’t have access to internet, TV etc because there are no connections available. However, we are grateful for what we have and feel for those in the Hawkes Bay.

Thank you for making this. It's incredible how little is has been on UK news. Sorry that does not help, but to let you know this is important. The IPCC calls for emissions to be REMOVED from the atmosphere (as well as reducing them) and this is one of the reasons why, it is pretty much guaranteed. We are doing as much as we can to get your story out, that you need donations, and to help ppl realise the profits made at the pump are related to this, however uncomfortable and inconvenient that is. I would ask oil companies direct to help pay for the clear up. I hope your Government does. I hope the New Channels do. Wouldn't that be great?

Turns out most of these farms weren't insured and the government has just announced another $27 million for farms on top of the initial $25 million they already granted. Since when do we the taxpayer pick up the tab for a business that insurance companies won't touch? Sure we fix the roads, we fix schools, we clear the debri, we install power, we provide food, but replanting crops and paying for fencing is not our responsibility
