Congratulations Ada!!! I was born in Mexico, but became a U.S. citizen in 1993, but they made me give up my Mexico citizenship then. And then three years ago my wife said she wasn’t to move to Mexico after visiting Mexico several times. So I found out I could get my Mexican citizenship back and dual citizenship as well. I gathered my original birth certificate, my original U.S. citizenship paperwork, had what needed translated and apostiled and then made my appointment at the Mexican consulate here in my city, and while there received my Mexican passport as well, one stop shop. Because I paused at following up on some items, it took two months, all of this could have been done in three weeks. Stefan here. Congrats on your plans to move! I think you’ll be fine as long as you stay out of trouble. 🤗 remember, you will still be a US citizen. Stefan here for a third comment! If you would get in trouble as a US-only citizen, I suspect the only real benefit would be that they’d give you a visit, provide referrals, and help contact folks in the states (based on books that I’ve read). They may be able to apply a little pressure to get you out, but if you broke the law or are accused of breaking the law, you’d have to follow the process like anyone else. Hope this helps! ❤️

I know your pain. I think there are nuances that depend on which one you go to. I originally went to SF but it ended up that just doing it in PV was simpler all around. Key thing is that your parent(s) need to have a CURP. If I would have had that, it would have been easier to do in SF. However, since my mom was born in Jalisco, it was simpler for me to just get hers down here.

He was right. Since my mom’s hometown was so small, they had to put in a phone call to the town to verify records.

They know the church in tijuana but no one wants to go there. Surprisingly when her dad was working in Boise the Mex consulate there said they could help him get the cert copy. I spoke to the consulate in KC whick is the closest and easiest for us and they didn't act like once we had her dad's cert it was any big deal. But they also never mentioned her parents marriage cert and I don't think after their divorce 25-30 yrs ago the records were kept. So we will see. I know you may address it later but are you on a land trust now? And will you switch it now? Hey Grace, Stefan here. Expenses were minimal as Ada did the work herself versus hiring a service. She spent $100 incorrectly on expedited translation in the US when they didn’t accepted it and had to redo this in Mexico for $40USD. The other costs are are getting apostilled official documents such as birth certificates and marriage licenses that are relatively minimal and the costs are based on where you need to get them from. The true cost is time to get this all in order and correct any typos. As far as benefits, the biggest (although we did not take advantage of it) is the ability to own property near the coast or border without having a trust (trust costs about $400-$600 USD per year), ability to work legally in Mexico, and ability to have reduced taxes when selling property. Other benefits include reduction in airline taxes when flying into the country and also potential reduced visa fees when traveling to other countries using your Mexican passport. Also, I think there are other benefits when moving your belongings to Mexico without some import taxes. With recent Mexican changes, our daughter may also benefit from citizenship and I think there are tax benefits when she inherits our Mexican house someday. Also for me, I think it helps getting my residency. Right now I fly so frequently back and forth it is not an issue for me. Hope this helps!

Did you have to be a resident first or because your parents were Mexican decent you went straight to citizenship?
@LivingSimplyinMexico3 жыл бұрын
Stefan here - Ada's citizenship was based exclusively off of her mother being born in Mexico and originally her mom being a citizen of Mexico. Up until recently, only the next generation could get citizenship back, but as of this year, following generations can also be considered for citizenship. The real work is in establishing the paper trail to (birth certificates and marriage licenses) that are often times not 100% accurate in government systems. On my end (Stefan), I would have to be a resident to get citizenship after a long process. Since we travel so frequently in and out of the country, it is doesn't impact me much as my tourist visa resets. The long term impact really has to do with taxes and where we'll spend a majority of time as we get older.... that will be another video I am sure!

The market has changed quite a bit, so sadly houses with a view are priced out. There are houses on the lower end. Like ours did, they can be brought up to a nice condition fairly inexpensively. Here is where I’d look: my.flexmls.com/ampimls/search/idx_links/20101209212452924646000000/listings?_filter=City%20Eq%20%27Puerto%20Vallarta%27%20And%20MlsStatus%20Eq%20%27Active%27%20And%20PropertyType%20Eq%20%27B%27%20And%20ListPrice%20Bt%200.0%2C100000.0

The house we bought was purchased directly from a Mexican Citizen and it was very rustic so it might be more of a “boots on the ground” search but while there are “for sale by owner” places, those can be sketchy as there may be multiple family members that own the property and establishing the paper trail to make everything legit can delay things.

When I say directly, I mean that it wasn’t a property owned by a foreigner already. We purchased through our buyer agent and the property was listed on the MLS.

I believe unfortunately it is through your parents.

Hello Ada, does your parents birth certificate (assume born in Mexico) need to be apostilled as well? By what I am getting from this vid: your original birth certificate apostiled, marriage license apostiled (mine were married here), original parents birth certificate and everything translated in Mexico. Does this sound correct? Thank you in advance!
@LivingSimplyinMexico Жыл бұрын
Stefan here, will check with Ada as that sounds correct. For Ada, it took a while, but she found her mom’s in the system in Jalisco I believe.

@@LivingSimplyinMexico thank you for checking with her. To further clarify my parents were married in the US so I am assuming that I need to get their marriage license/document apostiled.
@LivingSimplyinMexico Жыл бұрын
Hey Stefan here, spoke to Ada. She basically said apostiled documents are needed when documents are from a foreign country like from the US…. Applies to US birth certificates, marriage licenses, etc. We found that translation was only good from an approved, local translator in Mexico. Hope this helps!

I am trying to do same - Mexican mother from Octotlan Jalisco/American father, both passed away Where do I get my bc apostilled, from what entity (I am near San Jose, Ca or SF)? Should I get two right then and there if going to get passport anyway? I have moved around a lot in my 62 years in US - how much proof do they need for passport part? I am having an incredibly difficult getting an appointment for the citizenship online - been months of trying. Should I just go to PV or GDL to get the citizenship and do I need an appointment for that ? Thank you! A bit lost on all this..

Good luck Esther. Stefan here. I chatted with Ada and you need to get things apostilled by the state of CA. Ada then did all her submissions in Puerto Vallarta, then got her passport in San Francisco.

Question... Was your husband still able to purchase the property in PV even though he's a US citizen and not MX citizen?
@LivingSimplyinMexico2 жыл бұрын
Stefan here. To keep things simple, we just went through a trust. It is uncertain if our daughter will become a citizen, so having a trust in place makes it easy from that perspective too.

oops I just got my birth certificate translated in the US , also when I got it back they stamped the translation sheet and not my actual original birth certificate, do you think that will matter?
