@@mrnmrn1 I think T2 would be good on any big screen but probably to get the best out of it, it would have to be a film print. It just wouldn't feel right watching that great film on video, however good it might be. It's an historic film of its time and possibly there should be screenings of such films regularly in major city centres across the world so that people who were too young to have lived it when these films were in cinemas can still have the experience of going back to those great days today. Having said that, most cinemas aren't run by people with the knowledge or interest. John.

I never owned a 35mm projector but a friend of a friend had one and we got together once and I was able to see it projected. I since then moved to the US, but I still own it.

There are 35mm projectors about so it's worth asking around if you have any friends who may know someone in the cinema industry. Failing that, machines do appear all over the world on eBay. You won't need digital sound for T2 which will make the whole thing a little easier to get working properly but if you can find a kit that comes ready with the digital sound capability and Dolby processor to handle it then that will be even better. My other 35mm projector is a portable which takes 2000ft spools. A reel change every 20 minutes or so but that's a lot of the fun with that machine. John.

Oh, Jenny Agutter... say no more! Hold your horses on the T2 4K though because it's half of the 3D video master file abomination. It's not exactly got the best reputation. The LD is probably the best option there but failing that, the DVD as I've heard the Blu-ray isn't very good. John.

Must fire-up the LD version again soon!
@moviecollector592013 күн бұрын
Owing to all the comments I get on this channel I've had reasons to think about what the best home video versions of film releases are and I'm increasingly thinking that LaserDisc would be the way to go for many. They don't work so well on current video projectors but if watching on a telly up to average size then I think many would be more satisfied with them rather than 4K a lot of the time. At least you get the original sound but with T2 I remember the clips I saw on my own LaserDisc being impressive. Not up to the Super 8 quality of course. John.
@cameralabs13 күн бұрын
@@moviecollector5920 the remastering is certainly a double-edged sword. It can of course bring improvements, but also spoil or change some elements negatively for some people. Cynically, having bought about 45 versions of Aliens, I know it's ultimately about making more money by selling different 'improved' versions. But equally you have to respect the wishes of the film maker for their vision. If James Cameron, Peter Jackson or George Lucas genuinely think xxx is the superior or more authentic version of their vision, then who are we to argue. BUT ultimately maybe we're after different things. Film makers want to see their vision presented, but collectors and enthusiasts may prefer something that's more authentic to their original viewing experience - more of a nostalgia vote - and that's becoming hard to find these days. Indeed, bringing us back to LD as probably the best quality version of the original presentations.

As a projectionist had a lot of fun with the opening of T2, we had a bloody good sound system and that opening sequence when the robot foot stamps on the skull we up the subs and up the volume on that one moment and watch the audience jump out of their seats and skins obviously turning things down once the sound effects really kick in, you had to be sensible with peoples hearing!

Evening Graham. I hadn't thought of turning that foot stomp onto the skull up louder... but I was shooting some video at the time so I think I have a good excuse. Watching through this video, seeing the clips of T2 and Cleaning Up the Town, such a difference can be seen between the 35mm film and the video presentation. Such an experience that must have been to have 35mm prints playing at home, and with such great company as well. I think most all of us home theater lovers make it our mission, with varying degrees of success (some outside of our control), to try and recreate that film exhibition experience at home. What a treat it must have been! Cheers.

It's always special to run a film print Eric but the video projection is better than it looks. Whatever I do, no camera I have set to any of the myriad video formats is able to eliminate the flickering of the DLP projection. To the human eye though, it can be amazingly impressive and many of the 4K discs could be passed off as 35mm with some of the Blu-rays looking fairly exceptional too. 'Cleanin' Up The Town' works extremely well on our rather large home screen and makes it even more enjoyable than it would be on a telly. Having the Director there for this dip into it make it even more special. A great, historical film documentary. There aren't many quite like it. John.

The screen is 10 feet when the side masking is fully open but with the 35mm I'm currently only able to enlarge to about 8.5 feet. The main thing I want to make with all this is that it's actually all quite easy to do it if there is a spare room. We used to have it all in our living room in central London and that was just as enjoyable. All hidden away until night time and then the screen rolled down from behind a pelmet to completely cover one side of the room. John.

Hello John, What a nice surprise to see Ben and Anthony with you. Your cinema still looks lovely. Ben and I go back about 30ish years. I loved this video and the chat between the three of you. You made some interesting points about a Dolby optical Stereo track on one print sounding much better than the Dolby Digital track on the same print, which is not unusual. I have known it when a digital print has looked better and sounded better than the 70mm print of the same film. (not mentioning any dates or film titles). In your home cinema you and Ben turn your subs off to be respectful to your neighbors. I do the same in my home cinema., It was nice that you praised Ben for enhancing your sound system. I enjoyed listening to Anthony about the documentaries he has made. An excellent and very interesting video. Thank you. All the best. Spoolbox

Evening Fred. Ben's an excellent cinema equipment engineer as much as being a great friend and colleague. He's also been working on my portable 35mm and if we can ever get that right it might be making a day trip to your home cinema so we can get you on camera with film again. I think that would make for a very good talking point to get all the memories streaming out of you. It's the sound that's the big issue at the moment but Ben's still trouble shooting it. We don't have neighbours so close to worry about here so the subwoofer is a wall shaker in this house. After T2 I found glasses in one of the kitchen cupboards had worked their way over the edge of a shelf. That was close. By the way, Ben and I both worked/helped out at the BFCC. Ben did a 70mm show for us one time with a reel of Lawrence Of Arabia. Incredible. A one day setup and show and we had Super 8, 16mm, 35mm and 70mm. I've just punched the time stamp to point out a comment you made (and by now may have been advised on) but first John, I have to say thank you for such a great video. I just wanted to say it before I side track. So.. the part when you open the PAL Laserdisc (which I do own) and mentioned a LD/Vinyl sized box set. Studios did try this. Fox, Universal the BBC and mainly Disney via Star Wars, Marvel and some classic animation and a few of the Live Action remakes did BIG Sleeve Blu Ray. There was something around 30 - 40 titles across the UK and Germany. Different titles had different varieties some came with a DVD, Blu Ray and a Bonus disc. Others like Universal did Trilogy compilations like Jurassic and BTTF with DVD and Blu Rays with single releases like ET getting a triple dip of DVD,2k Blu and a 4k Blu. Some looked cheap and generally not taking advantage of the 12" Space but a few like Indiana Jones took full LD inspired glory. If you look them up the Indy trilogy has the original art work and! The only BIG Sleeve to have the THX logo printed on the jacket as well as a picture of George wearing his THX t-shirt from a BTS snap from Last Crusade. I think T2 got an LP release that came with a Blu Ray not many years ago? But it is the new Grain Free 3d ready 4k in the package. But again. Such a wonderful video and may I say, a far departure from that c*** u went through. May that rest as a one off! Thank you Jeffan. I have never seen any of those LD sized packaged releases. I don't suppose there was enough interest if there were around 40 of them done and then the plug was pulled. I wouldn't normally even think of the packaging but so many people leave comments about how disappointed they are with the inlays or slip covers of modern releases that when I look at a LaserDisc gatefold it always makes me think how reintroducing something like that would stop all the complaints. If that the DVD snapper case of T2 you tell us about at the end of your comment? Any chance of pointing us to a listing on eBay or somewhere else so we all know what to look for? John.

It is a sensational action film Timothy but I've only ever seen it on film. 70mm, 35mm and Super 8 to be precise. I have seen clips of the LaserDisc and I remember that looking very good too. Interestingly, I was able to take notice of the digital effects this time and how well they stand up. It's obvious the quality isn't as good during the CGI sequences but better than many films that came afterwards for years. John.

Excellent channel you have here laddy. I'm a big movie fan and have always wanted a 35mm enabled setup in my house . Only problem is, in England , we have crappy small houses and fitting a decent full projector in them would not be practical or feasible. Plus since films run on 5 reels you'd need a large platter to lace it on and that would take even more space, not possible in a regular generic detached house. You'd need a large house in the south of England for that ,which would, cost a few million . But I've been a huge fan of your channel for 2 years now and I have to tell you a few things about film and 4 k . Film doesn't have a resolution. It consists of a DPI formation which means the resolution is limitless , that's why movies were watchable on VHS AND LASERDISC because there were no pixels and even though the resolution was limited by the vhs / betmax tapes we would still watch them without annoying pixels. 4k and blu Ray are all digital video systems. They are made up of thousands of tiny dots , like the dot matrix displays, and if one pixel is missing then the whole image is distorted, so 4k can never be compared to 35mm . Because Film has no resolution. You can blow it up to any screen size and it will always retain every detail the camera picked up on , cell by cell. Film cells are just like the human eye sees . Now can you put a resolution on the human eye and say it sees at 20k? No. But some scientists will say yes . That's not true , the eye sees in DPI too . Just like Film and of course video and film are 2 different creations altogether. It's true since film comes in different sizes 8mil 16mil 35mil and of course 70mill the resolution stays the same on each format but details is more visible on larger screens for the eye to see. It's not that 16mil is less able than 70mil but it's how the eye translated the detail. If you put a 16mil film on an imax screen the resolution would be the same but the eye would not be able to see the fine details, the details would not be distorted on the screen , but you'd need to get close to see it . 70 mil because the cells are larger the details would be easier to see. Of course it depends on other factors like the type of film , the director shot on , quality, which emulsions and adhesive are used in the manufacturing of film and. Of course the dyes which are used also . Kodak has the best colour and image . Then there the cameras which a director uses. There are many thet can impact the viewing experience by 100% most directors opt for Panavisiin, which is American or Arriflex, which is German , or Moviecam , the three major ones . I would say Panaviaion is the most expensive and then there are the Lenses which are MOST important too. If the director uses the wrong lenses or a cheap lense then the image will be cheap and blurry . So you see film is not the same as 4k and it can never bee the same, even if you scanned a film cell at 200k resolution it still would not capture all the details on that film cell . It's gets very complex and goes into physics as how well the lense captured the photons from the light and then presses that light onto the film cell . Film has the same resolution as the human eye . Hahaha haha glad I was able to feed some input on the subject . Love the channel and love your cinema room .

A portable 35mm like my Ging Gan Shan SPECTRA 90 model is what you need to keep an eye out for. There are better machines but that's a good starter and there are enthusiasts who always step up to help us get the things working as well as possible. The Kinoton FP20 is actually about the same footprint so that might be even better given it takes 6000ft reels. Thank you for taking the time to type up all the information about image quality and resolution. Right back in the early days of the whole HD video era there were comparisons of 'resolution' and while film cannot be equated there were estimates of around 900 lines for Kodachrome Super 8. Later on when the 2K DI nonsense came about which so harmed cinema across the western world, 35mm film began to have a capability equivalent of more than 5K applied to it. None of this is entirely true but simply estimates to put things into perspective. The advantage of digital video is it is cheap and that was clearly the main driver. Film is still my preferred choice but I do appreciate being able to project 4K videos at home and get close to cinema as we used to know it. 35mm film projection at home is cinema as we used to know it of course. John.

True Lies looked quite good in here by the time we'd finished tweaking every possible setting. Trevor of Double Bill Movies still felt like the Blu-ray was better but I preferred the 4K, but it was close. We both agreed the LaserDisc had the best sound though. Aliens not being perfect isn't really a problem because every LD copy of it I have (three I think) is good and the Super 8 features are exceptionally good so there's not really much need for anything else. But it should be a good test to see which Simon and I prefer between 35mm and 4K. I think we all know what to expect but the 4K may surprise us. It's aimed at a more general audience who don't necessarily understand how films really look and just want the cleanest looking image on their home video discs. Aliens 35mm/4K video COMING SOON. Brilliant John, nice to see the FP20 running, its an ideal 35mm projector for home use. We had three projectors at the cinema, one being a new FP20 and regard it as one of the quietest running 35mm around. We made a video way back of Movieland cinema and the projectors, including threading up the Kinoton. The video is on you-tube, as much as I like using a video projector these days, running 35mm film is very special. Regarding T2 I have watched the 3D conversion and it looks great on the Epson VP, thanks again John.

Evening Graham. I think I can guarantee that I will never watch a 3D of Terminator 2. I just can't imagine that but I'm not the biggest fan of complete features in 3D anyway. I do like an occasional novelty and a few features have surprised me such as DREDD which I thought was pretty terrific. The FP20 is proving to be a lot of fun. Having the sound working as it should took a while but it was Ben who sorted that out for me. It is surprising how good the analogue Dolby SR is at times but that was my opinion in 1993 when we had the switch to digital sound because quite often I thought sound used to be better with good old Dolby Stereo. I'll try to remember to take a look for your KZbin video of all the projectors. I've probably watched it before but I can never get enough of seeing film projectors working. John.

Saw it twice in 35mm at the PCC over the years. What an experience, the old Guild Distribution Logo, the Carolco logo, and then having that bass booming out of the speakers makes you wonder why on earth would you want to remaster films 😂 And it was watching The Terminator in 35mm (again at the PCC) and that question cemented itself. I'm personally partial to the 3D conversion that was done in the 2010s, but I'd love to see a 35 mm print of this movie in person. When I try to host movie nights with friends in VR chat, I make sure to at least include a sound format trailer before the movie starts. I mainly have a lot of old Dolby digital promos from the 90s (stuff like City, Egypt, Temple and train all with AC3 audio tracks, which is perfect for my setup) and a lot of THX bumpers from that THX store demo DVD. I have my Plex ever set up to randomly pick one before a movie starts as well. Heck, when I did Jurassic Park, even though it was the 3D conversion, I still managed to find a copy of the DTS digital experience trailer (A 4K scan of a print that somebody uploaded with surround sound audio) And I just made sure to play that before the movie started just to complete the experience of being in a theater.

LaserDisc always came with the original soundtracks and it can be surprising how good they sound today. Earlier this year Trevor from Double Bill Movies came over with the 4K of TRUE LIES as well as the Blu-ray and the DVD. I had the LaserDisc. We both felt the LD had the best sound of them all. Another snippet I'll impart is that because I was early into the home Dolby Stereo surround sound thing more than 30 years ago - to give us cinema sound to match the ten foot screen and many of the best Super 8 feature releases - I was always looking to get better and better sound. When the 6.1 and 7.1 amplifiers came to market I couldn't resist but I quickly realized the sound was muddied. I decided a much bigger room was required to get the best out of all that and so I quickly went back to 5.1 and unless I ever get a home cinema about 20 foot square, that's how I'm staying. However, smaller speakers would probably benefit from more of them but I've been THX Ultra for more than 20 years now so that ain't ever going to happen. John.

I’m not fundamentally happy about the use of A.I. on film restorations, but the new 4K-restored Titanic, Aliens and The Abyss have been mostly enjoyable on my home OLED. I saw The Terminator (1984) as the new 4K remaster a few nights ago on a big screen in a movie theatre here in Finland. It looked good to me and I was fully able to enjoy the movie - no awful A.I. artifacts caught my attention. I do plan to add that 4k-disc in my collection, as well. However, I do hope the use of AI will not be the standard for future 4k-restorations in physical media. A 4k/8k scan and removing scratches and blemishes should be enough, and has been enough.

Excellent ‘talking heads’ 35mm film review, John… enjoyed it a lot. Now looking forward to the Ghostbusters 2 documentary… I actually watched T2 during the original release in 1991 in Singapore. It was showing at one of Singapore’s premier cinemas - huge screen and a 70mm blow up print, it was a great experience. I bought the LD box set many years later (with the metallic T2 logo on the front). Still have that… So, what do you think of the Terminator 2 4K release compared to the reel film experience? A lot of reviews call it ‘waxinator’ due to the excessive use of DNR removing all the grain and detail. But it seems a scrubbed 3-D version was used for the 4K release by mistake instead of the true 4k master… Thanks

Very good point Ben made about T2 in CDS. The only home video release to date that still has the original CDS is an early R1 DVD edition (I have a copy if it). The audio is superb. There were only a handful of CDS films, some are still stuck in Laserdisc limbo. I have a nearly complete CDS collection. Hudson Hawk is one that lost its CDS, the LD is Matrixed 4.1, not CDS, for example. Assuming for your screening you didn't have access to a CDS decoder?

The piece about Aliens at the end reminded me also of Alien. That's another one with a history still stuck in Laserdisc limbo. The THX Laserdisc has the original 70mm Sensurround 6 Track audio on it. No other release of the film has that available to date. I took the Sensurround Laserdisc track, dumped it bit perfect and muxed it to a dump of my 4K copy of the disc. It's now safely preserved on my NAS with the track added to it. A very good audio track and a shame it's hard to come by for many folks alas.

If everything is on the 4K though Mark, what do we need a duplicate on Blu-ray for? I know some people like to watch their discs over and over again and in several rooms where they don't always have 4K players everywhere, but that has got to be a rarity. I've had a few 4K players develop the 4K Fault but where that happens I want to see the film as a 4K disc and not the Blu-ray which means I've had to replace them (with one exception - Apollo 11, which looks just as good on Blu-ray). Visited BFI Southbank NFT1 for the first time last Saturday to watch the epic 5 hour Red Cliff (Parts I and II). In the downstairs lobby they have a Philips DP70. My friend wondered how that compares with a Kinoton FP75 which is what NFT1 previously had installed (~June 2017)? If you or one of your friends know John, would be interested to hear how each projector compares against one another. Thanks.
@moviecollector592013 күн бұрын
Well, I believe the DP70 is the only piece of cinema equipment to have ever been awarded a US Academy Award. I don't think anyone would challenge the supremacy of that great projector over anything else but you never know. The DP70 could also project TODD-AO which was 70mm at 30fps as well as the standard 35mm and 70mm at 24fps. One heck of a piece of kit. My colleague Steve Rowley has two of 'em! John.

I never saw one of those. I think gatefold LP/LD size 4K special multi-disc releases would work and sell well. They'd also take up less space on a shelving rack. 100 LaserDiscs take up far less space than 100 DVD's or Blu-rays. John.

@@moviecollector5920They were out for a short time a few years back. I really liked them, but obviously not enough did as they stopped making them. There were a few big titles such as Back to the future, jurassic Park, indiana Jones and some Disney films. But they weren't really around long enough to produce T2 and the like, which was a shame.

Not the biggest fan of T2 for some reason. I prefer The Terminator personally. Aliens on the other hand is James Cameron's best film to date! It is exceptional and easily in top 3 best films ever made. Never got to see it at the cinema as I was only 10 years old back in 1986😂. Cheers John.

Morning Mike. Yes, it's anamorphic and yes, I have the lens to unsqueeze it thanks to my fellow film collecting friends. It's a wonderful community of like-minded enthusiasts.
