I'm doing quite a lot of these lately and have found that the results are more to my liking without adding silicone and heat.
When planing these two, I kept the carmine out of the second pour intending to drizzle it over at the end, however, I was so impressed with the result without it that I left it off. What do you think? Was it the right decision?

Linda Johnston thank you for your words. If I can give you one tip for doing pots, make your paint slightly thicker than you normally would to get better coverage on the pots. I made several pretty but awful mistakes with these when I started doing them! And I was determined to get cells! Ultimately when I did, I didn't like them. So now I just use sparkles instead, pearl paints or added iridescent medium. All the best with yours 😊

Latressa Allen the sky is the limit, it's so much satisfaction and fun seeing the paint create patterns and watching them change and settle. My only suggestion on using glass as opposed to terracotta is to make the paint a little thicker to decrease the amount of flow as the glossy surface of glass means the paint wants to keep flowing and will get quite thin. The inside will look fascinating as well! All the best, Kalena

Sharon Carty oh and I missed responding to your second question, sorry, the inside of the pot is all clear from paint as I have the pots sitting on cups so the extra paint falls directly into there and can be used for another pour sometimes though usually is too messy by then. Katrina Hoskin the sealer only takes around 4 hours. Two coats are needed to achieve a decent degree off waterproofing though. From memory I think it's 4 hours between coats then 48 until it can be used for plants.

@kalenaflows4574
@kalenaflows4574 6 жыл бұрын
Swagger King hi there, I'm afraid I can't give you an answer on this one as I've not worked with epoxy. There's only one way to find out! Pick some colours and give it a whirl, you may be on to a beautiful thing. Art is all about having an idea and playing with it to see if it works if you can't find someone else already doing it. It's trial and error and learning along the way, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but it's fun! I hope you give it a go.

Wow thankyou for the video. Definately will try doing. Just wonder, whats the difference with/without silicone and heat?
@kalenaflows4574
@kalenaflows4574 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) the silicone adds a clearer and more uniform cell structure to the pattern produced by the layers of paint. It isn't necessary to add it as you will still get a cell structure without it, it will simply be different. The heat brings out the cells quicker so you will get more uniformity as more will dorm at the same time, again, this is the case with or without silicone. Neither heat nor silicone is necessary and passing around with different combinations will let you discover your preferences. Good luck, I know you will enjoy it!

Llana Dyess thank you. I don't use a primer on the pots. Internally I seal them to waterproof them and use a regular terracotta pot and ornament sealer. Syly Syly I pour directly onto the pots. The inside is treated and the varnish that goes on the paint waterproofs the outside. Also the floetrol and pva go towards helping to waterproof the outside but on their own don't waterproof.

@kalenaflows4574
@kalenaflows4574 6 жыл бұрын
Syly Syly that would be a lovely gift! They're treated with Bondall terracotta pot and ornament sealer. I picked it up at a hardware shop. It shouldn't be too difficult to track down a similar product if you can't find the same where you are. I'd guess any plant nursery or place that sells pots would be able to point you to the best product for the job. All the best with it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
@kalenaflows4574
@kalenaflows4574 6 жыл бұрын
rkyobo I haven't used minwax so would suggest contacting the manufacturer to see if they have any advice on if they would recommend it for this kind of product. I use generally 2 or 3 coats of Micador spray varnish. I decide on how many coasts by how well the coats have adhered and that is usually dependent on how much silicone I've used in the paint.

Hi, thank you. The paint is mixed with Floetrol, PVA, and a very small amount of silicone. You can use water instead of Floetrol but I prefer the latter as the patterns are a little crisper.

What did you use to place the pots on to hold them off the table? They are lovely and I would like to do this with a group of seniors in a long term care so I am working at getting all the tips I can on how to do it the easiest way possible. Thanks
@kalenaflows4574
@kalenaflows4574 6 жыл бұрын
Donna Buchan I'm fortunate that I have a big enough table to leave them there and get several pours going to dry at a time, however, if they're left for a couple of hours for the paint to absorb into the pot, they are then dry enough to move and you could put them on a bench. Mine sit on a moveable circle of thin melamine so that they can be moved easily anyway. To stand them high enough to pour them I have them on inverted cups so they are not touching the pouring surface. They're inverted so that isn't excess paint pooling in the centre hole, it drains into the cup instead. Doing this as a project how you've mentioned is a great idea and I'm happy to give you further info if you like, just drop a line here and ask. Good luck with it!

Hi Heather, I seal the internal with a terracotta sealer - two coats with 24 hours between them, and I varnish using a dulux indoor outdoor gloss. These are both extremely effective and I have had half a dozen pots in varying sizes sitting out the front of my house for the past 3 years and they look like new still.

Hi Kalena, I just found you and this video. I love your work, and I am so very impressed with your kindness in sharing your info with us new painters. I have Liquitex standard acrylic paints. How will they work in comparison with the paints you use? Also, I live in the California desert. Do you think the painted pots can stand up in summer extreme heat? Thank you!

Hi! Thank you Susan, I'm pleased you've enjoyed my work. Pour painting will work just as well with any type of acrylic paint, the only thing you will find is the necessity to change the amount of liquid you add depending on the viscosity of the paint. I've used very thin acrylic paints and added more PVA in order to thicken it slightly and then added Floetrol - less than if I use the heavy body paints. Basically which ever type of paint you use you'll still be targeting the same end texture of warm honey - it should flow smoothly but not quickly from your mixing stick when you lift it from the container. Hope this helps!

Oh, and yes, there's no reason the heat will cause problems. Here in Australia mine have been outdoors for more than 2 years in temperatures up to 45 Celsius and have not been damaged.

Thank you so much. If you use silicone, do you need to clean the surface after the pot drys, before you spray varnish? I can't wait to try this. My friend is ill, and a colorful flower pot will cheer her up.

@@kalenaflows4574 45 Celsius is about 113 Fahrenheit. We actually can get a few days a year up to 51 Celsius! Be safe from the virus.

I understand that a lot of painters will wash canvases to remove silicone but it's not something I've ever had trouble with - the varnish has always stuck cleanly and I've still got no discolouration on my original paintings. Not much silicone is used and I use a spray so maybe that's why. Regarding the heat (other than my heart going out to you! ) I'd simply suggest trying to find the coolest place you can for the pots to dry as it can apparently cause problems if they dry too quick. Maybe a basement. Dry and not too hot or humid. At this time of year I'm guessing the heat wouldn't be excessive as it's early spring. I hope your friend gets great enjoyment from your gift and recovers quickly. Stay safe and well, Kalena

Gorgeous! But how do you protect it from chipping and peeling off?

Thank you :) I use a terracotta sealer on the inside and varnish the finished product on the outside. I have pots that I painted 5 years or more so which live outside with plants in them. They still look brand new.

Ranjit Kaur the colour names all appear on screen at the beginning of the clip. As for brand, I'm using Mont Marte dimension heavy body acrylic paints for all of them. 🙂

Thank you! I use Dulux indoor/outdoor clear gloss spray for the pots. This has worked fantastically for me. You should be able to find this or similar product in any paint shop.

Lovely What is your paint to Floetrol ratio and how long before you can varathane?
@kalenaflows4574
@kalenaflows4574 4 жыл бұрын
Paintball you :) Paint to Floetrol will vary slightly depending on how thick the paint is. I use a high density paint which is almost as thick as peanut butter. You can mix this with a combination of water and Floetrol or with just Floetrol (in addition to the pva). My preference is to leave out the water as I feel the results are crisper. I would usually end up using at least 3 times as much Floetrol. The aim is to achieve a fluid which has the consistency of warm honey - a little thick but not so thick that it's dripping off the end of your mixer. Hope this helps!

Very beautiful design and idea i must say. Is there any other way to get similar design without wasting so much paint?

Shibani Datta thanks! I use extra paint as I create jewellery from the flow off paint when it dries. Using less paint isn't a problem as looking as you manage to cover the entire pot.

adnan satti2018 hi they are all Mont Marte dimension acrylic paints. The paints are very thick which makes them ideal. They are an Australian company so I'm not sure where they are available. outside Australia.
