Great video. The story really is every bit as good as Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6

I agree entirely. There's only one thing Chrono Trigger did that I wish they did in Terranigma as well: multiple endings.

Since I live in Europe, I was lucky enough to be able to get this game when I was a kid. Actually, my father got the game, and he was also playing it, while I was watching. I think it was the best gaming experience I ever had in my life, without even touching a gamepad. The story, the graphics, the music sucked both of us into this world, and the feeling of immersion was insane for me. Dungeons like the giant tree felt so large and it was an undescribable feeling, being lost in this maze while being so far away from home (the underworld). Needless to say, this is my favorite game, and I don't see this changing ever. I should probably play it again from start to finish with my dad sometime.

If there’s any one virtual experience that will move you, it’s Terrangima. I finished it last year after dealing with ongoing troubles in life, and couldn’t get it out of my head for at least a month after I finished. A few months afterwards I suddenly lost my Grandpa - Whom I was incredibly close with - out of the blue. I then, suddenly had a close friend pass on this past December. Given the timing of completion and these hard losses, it has left a permanent mark on my life, and can truly say that it’s now my favorite “Videogame” ever made. (And believe me, that’s saying A LOT coming from a guy who’s held FF VI, Chrono Trigger, A Link To The Past, Yoshi’s Island and Mario RPG in the highest regards) Overall this masterpiece WILL make one reflect on life, loss, rebuilding and so much more. It’s heartbreaking yet beautiful all at once. I fell in love, and now hold Terrangima even closer to my heart than before, and am sure will continue to until my final breath. If they made a movie based on it I can confidently say it will be universally acclaimed. Thanks for taking the time to let the world know how great it truly is, Derek.

Not only is this one of the best games on the SNES, the soundtrack is transcendent. The Way Home is AMAZING. It's simple, just strings, a flute, and a bass line, but once you know how the game ends, it becomes one of the best tracks ever written. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe that track. I got a repro cart a few years back. Glad I did. HARD as hell, but worth every second of time invested into it.

I remember when I was 10 years old, my brother got an emulator for the laptop and I played chrono trigger and earthbound on the emulator but I saw this game on his emulator list and I never heard of the name terranigma and so I went ahead and went into the game. The intro already hit me... as I was playing through the game, I couldn't believe how I've never heard of this game and how great it was. The soundtrack was like nothing I've heard before or expected to be in a game. When I watched this video... I wanted to cry because of the crysta theme. I swear that one day I will get a English translation copy of this game.

Great review. Terranigma truly is one of the lost classics for you lot in North America. And luckily for us in Europe we actually got a SNES RPG that North America didn't get. Nice reproduction by the way.

Amazing game. I love sense of hopeful melancholy that hangs over this trilogy. There are some really powerful and sad scenes throughout. Did you ever play The Granstream Saga on the PS1? Its actually a 4th entry in Quintet's series, but most people don't know about it. Its a good game, but definitely not a masterpiece like the previous 3 were. Terranigma is a perfect ending for the series anyway.
@SuperDerek10 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The tail end of the game really caught me off guard, and I had never felt so conflicted about an ending before, which Miyazaki left open to speculation intentionally. And yeah, I actually just beat the game a few days ago, and I couldn't agree with you any more. :)

Until then, I had no idea it was made by the team responsible for ActRaiser, one of my all time favorite games, or that it was part of a series of sorts. Plus, I only played it for a couple of weeks as a kid when I received my pre-ordered copy before getting sidetracked, never to return. Dear Derek, thank you for this wonderful retrospective review of Terranigma. Terranigma was without a doubt the best RPG available to us Europeans up until the release of Suikoden in April 1997 and also the best game of the 4th generation console era for us Europeans. It's such a pity of what became of Quintet after this title, and it's so unfortunate that our friends in North America couldn't experience this masterpiece in 1996.

The magic system is actually useful. In the great lakes cave there is an enemy that causes lethal poison. In order to heal it you need either special type of medicine or a wind pin. The second one being the easier one to obtain.

In fact, you can get a PAL copy, and have your NTSC-region SNES modified with a 50/60Hz switch and a region-lock switch. You need both because the game actually detect the region-lock AND the Hertz (power on the console with region-lock at On and on 50Hz, once you see the game booted up, switch to 60Hz). And since it's the only game worth playing that never made it in North America, and able to detect both settings, i like to call this special mod the "Terranigma mod".

When I was perhaps 10 or 11 I went to my favorite shop at the time, my local videogame shop and I bought Terranigma without hesitation, without asking info about it and I played it and eventually finished it and it took me a long time. Not because it was that hard but I kept loading my savegames to replay many memorable parts of the game and I just tried to stay in these areas where I didnt want the plot or the music to stop. Now i´s 32 and I still play it. People call the best of the best sometimes creme de la creme, or the beluga kaviar of ... or cristal among champagnes. I cant do that with this game because when I play it I am in my own world. I´m directly part of the game while I stretch it out as long as I can. This game can never be forgotten because it lives within anyone who ever played it.

Well said. The game was one of the last gems of the SNES era and i am glad that i got it. Was a blast in my childhood playing trough it, though i suppose i did not get all the epicness at the time. So to be fair, Terranigma never came out in North America and Chrono Trigger never reached European borders, so at least each Continent had one over-epic Game ^^

Its such a great feeling when you discover a gem like this game. When I first played it in 1995, it instantly became my favourite game, and to this day has only been usurped by one game - Suikoden 2.

Magirocks are not non-regenerative. Using a spell refunds all Magirocks spent on its purchase, and I found spells to be very useful on some boss encounters (when you are not overleveled).

Yep! I've gotten this correction a time or two over the years. Wish I could update the video, but I can't. Thanks for watching though!

Fantastic review of a fantastic game. I've had a fairly rough time at work so I may dust off this beauty and give it another play through

Any recommendation of recent games that follows that same style? I am on a hunger for Alundra and Terranigma style of games. I never have never played Terranigma before, but since I bought Snes classic I have “included” some games in it. It is amazing

I love the voice and calmed tone of this guy... And yeah... this game is huge... romantic, poetic... as they made it before (sometimes). Old RPGs are God. Just God.

OMG,,,, there isnt many games that make me emotional.. but Terranigma is right up there at the top of the list!! The music gets me every time and still does to this day. Ive heard the arranged version of some of the tracks and omg they are fantastic. Its definitely my favorite game on the SNES equal to Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals. It saddens me because i used to own Terranigma CIB, which i got it for $15. Ended up selling for $10 for beer money :( :( :( i have the manual still somewhere... Oh i wish i could find it haha. Tanks for helping me to relive the most amazing game!!! Now if only i can find another copy for myself :)....... perhaps one day......

Absolutely. Like I said in a previous comment, the director, Miyazaki was a master at twisting the knife, and the music just gets me. There are very few games that have made me tear up, but Terranigma is one of them for sure.

Just finished the game. Definitely an underrated one. I do think the map system in the dungeons could be better and I also think the ring system could've been handled better. Otherwise great game!

i've been wanting to play terranigma for a while, i ALMOST bought it in portland but went for lots of cheaper games instead. ever since i saw roo's review of it i've been interested in it.

Yeah, I saw some repros when I was in Portland, but I don't think the prices there were the best for 'em. I think you made the right choice. :)
